Thought i should let people know that I've tracked down another locked Predator (U7180) and plan on using my unlocking method on it however this time i will properly photo-document the procedure and put together a little PDF document on the procedure.

A very large not to anyone who's thinking that they can now load it up on all there buddies trucks using this guide. This procedure destroys the stock tune stored on the Predator. So if you unlock your personal one to let a friend use it you are losing your stock tune forever. This is simply to circumvent the problem that arises when you sell your truck and reset it to factory defaults and now want to sell your U7180, This allows you to remove the VIN lock and sell it on a nice site like we have here to another LB7 driver.

Hope this helps, should hopefully get it done within the next 3 days hopefully.

Start to finish it was about 5 minutes I'd say, had a harder time doing it again and again till i had the video decent enough.

cool, this is a trick I'd like to try. I may even put mine up for sale and save the $99 since I'm not sure where I put ther receipt for it from 4+ years ago.

Yeah i'm hoping that this allows people to sell them a little easier, hopefully we don't start some huge crime spree with this. Its just a pain having to buy one not knowing if its locked or not since this take 5 minutes and it doesn't matter if it is or isn't.

Are you still doing this by hooking the Predator to a computer and sending data to it to erase the lock? You gave me the steps to do this in the past, but I never had any luck getting my laptop to communicate with the Predator.

Yeah this is the same steps the only thing is i go into detail for setting the communications speed which seemed to be what was really lacking in my previous steps. Also it looks like you don't need the free port monitor since all the same info is displayed in the other program and makes it a lot easier to send the commands.

The Videos in DivX it was the only format i could find that was compact enough to host on my webspace and maintain quality so you could read what i was typing.

I would imagine it would work with any predator but i have never had the chance to try.

And i found the numbers through trial and error. Its actually communicating in ASCII so the 55 is actually U and the 56 is V. I have a background in Electrical Engineering Technology plus I've always been a computer person, so figured I'd try to find out what made these things tick. At least now we can cut out the middle man when we need to sell these.

Now we have to just wait and see how long my ISP likes me hosting this off my webspace.

Following the Predators command logic i issued every command that i could think of and the two i used were the only ones that worked. Since its a U and V the hex values for lower cased also work the same way apparently.

since unknown did the hard part, I guess I can help out. I've got a few of these cables for communication from the PC to tuner available that we could send around as a pay-it-forward deal. You'll still need a power supply for them, but hey it can be shipped around for under $5.00 priority mail.

Download and install DivX from http://www.divx.com. After I installed that it play in WMP as well the DivX player.

I assume the way you're doing this process that the predator has a seperate (temporary) storage area for the stock tune when it is pulled from the truck and saved, and that the diablosport tunes are in a different protected (eprom or otherwise permanent) area somewhere and exist on the handheld regardless of the tune in the truck?

I guess I'm wondering if it is possible to accidently wipe any of the Diablosport tunes with this process...

got my 50.00 Predator today of ebay it is locked. i stopped by radio shack and got the cables and so. it is for a LLY not a LB7. i will give it a try and tell you guys how it went.

I wonder if Diablo will pull their applications off the Internet that support this when they find out. Just in case they do and I need it in the future - I downloaded everything yestereday.

In response to the guy concerned about erasing the predator tunes, from what i've found they are not stored in a user accessibly area so they are fine. I've ran a lot more codes on mine than just the 2 i use to unlock it so I imagine we'll be fine.

I purchased a predator U7180 for and old timer buddy of mine. He has a 2001 Duramax. I purchased this programmer in January. He didn't want it installed until March. (Too cold he said) It just so happens I have a close friend with a 2002 Duramax as well. Well he wanted to try out the predator for a couple weeks so I let him. I then took the chip off all the way. Well guess what happened I went to put the predator on the 2001 it says it's locked to a different vehicle. NO!!!!!!! The old timer is not happy he paid $300 for a chip that is locked. He's pissed. I myself had a predator for my 06 LBZ and took it off, and sold it. It worked fine on the other truck. So I thought it would be the same for the LB7's. BUT I WAS WRONG. So I seen this post, bought the cords at radio shack, downloaded the predator program off their site, and downloaded your video. My predator interface looks nothing like yours, I go to port settings and all I got is a Port option and a Baudrate option. I have none of the tools like in your video. Please help!!! My screen looks nothing like yours. Did I do something wrong?

Sorry forgot that there was two versions of it out now. Its the freeware version 0.99.07.

I just downloaded the freeware version 0.99.07. When I open it, it asks me what type of program I want to run it with. Which one do I use? I am by no means a computer person. Your posts have been extremely helpful, thanks again!!!!

You should just have to click the link for the 0.99.07 version, select save to disk, or save to? Save it to your desktop or any other place thats easy to remember.

Once its done downloading install it. Should do the generic questions, agreeing to lincensing (Its Freeware and as such is free), specify installation folder (usually c:\Progra~1\wSHDCom\), click install and it finishes the rest.

In the install it has a check box for if you'd like a desktop icon, by default its already check so if you just kept clicking next and install the icon should now be on the desktop.

Double click the icon.

Program will open into the regular screen you just have to configure the port.

Along the menu at the top of the program is a dropdown for Com. click "Com" and then "Port Parameters".

Port Parameters:
Port: This is usually going to be COM1: as on most PC's there is only the single com port left on the back.
Speed: 57600 This was found just by trial and error, i kept increasing the speed and selecting PC communication on the Predator till its message to the PC actually looked like english.
Parity: No Parity. Pretty standard
Data bits: 8 data bits. Once again pretty standard.
Stop bits: 1 stop bit. Again fairly standard.

And those are the settings, click ok and your one step closer.

Now either from the Com menu select "Run Communication" or click the little icon on the menu that looks like a play button. The rest is pretty much the video material, hope that helps getting you started.

OK I guess I'll ask a dumb question here, how do you know if you have a U7180 or not? I have one (predator) in my hand, that a guy wants to sell me. When I try to "tune" my truck with it it says its locked to another vehicle.

This is to the last two posters, What version is your predator and which engine is it for?

My options reads: Display Serial number, show last tune written, custom tune, troubleshooting, serial baud. Under "Custom tune" it then reads import custom tune/export tune/erase custom tune. I have tried communicating using the import tune, in which showed some activity on wSHDcom. But i'm not sure if it worked or not. Oh, this programmer is part number u7158 and V.8r10.

So the U7158 is for the Ford Lightning?

From what I can tell from some of the documents off the Diablosport support site is that this predator may possibly communicate automatically when a command is sent to it, but it seems to have a lot more features embedded in it and it would be hard to say if the same commands would actually unlock it. The one manual for DS Downloader had the device getting powered on once connected and then the software recognized it.

Try having the wSHDcom open and logging, have the predator connected, but plug the power in after, to see if it auto sends some kind of response to the program.

Here is a screen shot of the wSHDCOM when on power up and commands sent. I started up the program and then powered the Predator. I then sent the command and power down then up, the same with the next command.

Hmm interesting, it seems that what ever speed your communicating through is either too fast or too slow. In one of the manuals for that Predator it talks about 115200 as its comm speed. Try that and see if it will produce a coherent message.

i think mine was a u7194,, i know its not the same unit that is being tested here,, i have another unit that is a little older also for gas ls1 engines that i will try

i was able to get the unit to erase the crrom file by forcing a x y comand at start up,, it then displayed about to erase are you sure you know what you are doing? on the wSHDcom software, if yes press y , i had to do the x y comand at the same time to get it to see my y input otherwis i wasnt fast enough and it said function cancelled

then when i re-booted the diablo the crrom was gone, i had to do a factory re-load of the latest crrom u7194 software , but the vin from the vehicle it was used on was still there in the last vehicle programmed option button

i would say there is some other command needed on these newer units to erase the flash file that is loaded on it,, i did get the crrom file/software to erase from the unit, and re-flash it with the latest updates from the diablo download site

i noticed that also , the 1a doesnt do anything

i got the press x to exicute function
i entered 58 and it said something like about to erase unit, are you sure you know what you are doing, if yes press y, function canceled

i had to enter 58 59 at the same time, x y, then it erased the crrom file in the unit and when i re-booted the unit it said unit needs a crrom file to continue

i then used the diablo dsdownloader that you can get from there site and loaded the lastest u7194-9r02.crom file to the unit

it then booted up fine, but when i went to check the last file programmed in the options menu the vin number of the vehicle it was locked to was still there

It may be possibly that instead of sending the X the Y we could issue another character in the place of X the letters range from numbers "41" to "59" So some combination of "**59" may start up another command and confirm it.

I can't seem to get my to get mine to execute. I've typed 58 but i get no response from mine. At least we are getting somewhere.

camaro1 above had to send both 58 and 59 at the same time which if you type 5859 will send as two commands back to back. But this seems to just clean the programmers memory and not the actual stored vehicle program. Seems theres going to be another command that has to be sent, or else Diablosport really has made it so you can no longer unlock them this easily.

camaro1 have you found out what the verification option is for and the key number thats asks you for a password. I found that one after the verification option but shows up as a blank space with no name on the predator. I just select that space and it gives me a key #. Kinda interesting.

just tried the procedure on a u7193 (2004 gm ls1,trucks)i picked up for $25 because it was locked,,, it worked great the unit erased and is now ready to use again

Actually in my situation i found out there is a function under options/troubleshooting/ where it gives you a key (in which mine showed up d5fb 7a65 718a 36e7 0244) after that displays you press enter and then it asks you for a password. DS claims this is the way to reset a locked vin, if there a way to decode this key. Since it does change each time you start-up the programmer.

Xmodem is a file transfer protocol. Nothing really else to say about it. Its probably sitting there waiting for a value to be sent so unless you want to type random hex for an hour its probably best to just unplug it.

Do you have any idea how to unlock other Predator programmers? Can the same process be used as is used here? I bought one for my LLY and liked it so much, I convinced a friend of mine to get one for his FORD. Unfortunately, the seller's on the left side of the country and claims he's set the factory tune back, but the display says the last tune written was the "FACTORY HP TUNE" which apparently isn't the original backup tune.

I think the Diablo prompts differently for different vehicles, but if it's a simple ASCII input, someone ought be capable of deciphering it. The message I get for erasing is automatic, given once the powerup sequence is finished and the "enter" button is pressed and a prompt of "Warning: You are about to erase this tool. Press Y if you know what you are doing," and erasure is commenced upon an ASCII #59 (or "Y") being issued.

However, I'm wondering if issuing a HEX 04, or EOT will signal the Predator that the coding is finished, overriding the NAK (HEX 15) instrument's reply.

So far, I've not been capable of progressing beyond erasing the loaded CROM file.

Some more discoveries.After downloading the original tune from the Predator to the pc with DS Dowloader i opened the file in a hex editor. In the file there is a reference to a .dat file. This .dat file has the name of the original VIN (the previous owner). Tried to modify this VIN to my own VIN but the predator could not import the file. If you could find out a way to delete this file on the file on the predator. I am to unexeperienced when it comes to xmodem communication. By the way you can use Windows Hyper Terminal when communicate with the Predator.Finally i found out that (after sending XY) the hex code 5A5B15 will start the function "import from pc" on the predator. The code 181818 will cancel all jobs. This will probably not help anyone but if there will be more people trying to hack the predator we will soon find the problem.

I remember when using that DS Downloader the file it dumps to the computer is actually a different format than the one it wants to load into the Predator.

I called diablo before I found this link whatever vehicle it was on before was never returned to stock. The tune says it was left in 65hp in the truck it came from. I know the video was put up a while ago but I tried downloading it and I downloaded the divx player but all I see when I open it is a mouse cursor that moves in circles for 2 seconds then the video ends.

Mine is the U7180 for the LB7. I just picked it up off the front steps too. I just need to get the serial cable and power source for it.

First time poster here. 2 months ago bought my first diesel truck, LB7 '03 ECSB. Been trying to educate myself on these tuners and found this thread off the search. I am looking for some mileage. I get 14mpg now with all in town driving. Pulling my racecar trailer 10K lb. I am getting 11mpg. I had sort of decided on a Predator so if anyone on here can save me some coin and has one of these unlocked and for sale send me a message. Thanks

If you tow with a tuner you really need a 4 inch exhaust or you will overheat the turbo. Also from my experience, you won't improve fuel economy noticably

The stock exhaust will work just fine, but do not expect better milage out of a programmer. The stock tune is the best for milage, but with a programmer, you might lose a little, but the power gains far outweigh it!

It is just a choice you have to make, but the exhaust is 3 1/2" and the added expense going to a 4" you would have to drive the truck for 400,000 miles or more getting better milage to offset the cost.

Just my thoughts, and I could be wrong!

Sorry for the delay in reply, been out racing all weekend. My truck does not have a catalytic conveter on it. Does this change your mind as to whether I need 4" exhaust or not? I have always towed with a gas truck so this one in stock form has enough power. Got 11.2 mpg this weekend towing from Ohio into Pa. 300 mile round trip. I get to play with 1000HP on the weekends so I dont need to drive my truck like its a racecar. I am ok with the 11mpg towing. Could I improve on the 14mpg around town?

The way i figure it is that 1 mpg is = to about $200/yr. over 15,000 miles.

Is anyone else unable to see the pictures or is it just me? I need to unlock a predator and it would be great to see some pics and instructions

i did however find out to get past the auto-prompt.i have a dozen or so different no.'s and just got a u7194 to work on.i am trying my luck on sct to.
i ran across a guy doing work on hyper tech and i phones. i made a new friend local he does the x box.

i have loaded the commands in series on gm and it works fine.i have three fords to mess up.so far i completely erased a ford and forced a re-crom to a higher ver.still reads std tune,but most still read diablo tune and work?

I don't think anyone on here has cracked the Predators for a Ford yet. In fact I'm not sure that anyone other than you has tried.

it can not be to hard,
the way these are bench tested and loaded are the same way we use to erase the ram.it is just a matter of finding it.Just met a SCT programmer, he has no idea other than it is all hex.i am all so talking to another guy in Jacksonville.i will post up what ever i find out.the newer gm's need to be done too.thanks

i could not get windows 7 to work with my laptop tried with my desktop with xp worked just fine hope this helps

it is probable the usp cable drivers are wrong,buy a serial to serial if you can.i just got a 12 pin to 9 pin but have not tried it yet.the cable should have some info, try DS downloads.windows 7 is not it.i think all of us had the same issues at the start.keep at it

sorry for bringing up old thread, need to unlock my buddies predator, is that version of the downloader still available? I can seem to see it on there website. (unless its just my crappy work computer) I guess I'll check when i get home but if someone has some insight let me know, I tried the link to it earlier in the thread but it said link no longer exists or something like that

Hey all, I found this thread while... you guessed it! Trying to find a way to unlock a Predator! LOL! I've read through the entire thing, and there is a bunch of great information here. I own a U7194, and was able to get it to communicate with the wSHDCom program, but the 1A55 and 1A56 command prompt wouldn't work (as noted earlier in the thread). I also couldn't get it to erase the crom program either. It pretty much stops after it links up. I did find it a bit funny that even though the U7194 is for GM Gas vehicles, it still says Ford Predator on it once it starts communicating... Don't really know what to make of that.

Anyway, digging around on the internet trying to find ways to get this thing unlocked I've run across some information gathered here and there. It appears that when you contact Diablosport to get the Predator unlocked, they eventually send you an email that says to call them with the Predator powered up and ready to go. From what I've read, you go into that "unnamed" file in the Options screen that has the "Key" and depending on what particular "Key" it gives you (as it changes every time), they tell you what button sequence to push to unlock it as the password (I.E. up/down/left/right/etc/etc). I figure that since there are five sets of four letter/number combos with each key, there are probably five buttons that need to be pushed in the correct sequence to unlock the Predator.

Now, here is the interesting part... I got to looking at the four letter/number combinations and started putting them into the wSHDCom screen as a hex code just to see what it would do. I thought maybe it would be a hex code for "up" or "down" or whatever (I know, it couldn't be that easy could it?). Most of the time it just gives you some really weird symbols, but what I did find is that if you put the first letter/number combo in there the Predator knows what the rest of the "Key" is and gives you the entire key as it is shown on the Predator's screen on the right side of the wSHDCom screen where all the information comes up. So, it would seem that whatever the "Key" is.. It's not randomly generated as you would be led to believe, but is a set sequence of number/letters. I would think it would have to be for the Predator to know the entire sequence just from the first combination. Of course, I could be entirely wrong too.. I don't know if this would help the more computer savvy here, but I just thought I would mention it in the hopes that it might just click on a light bulb for someone out there with regard to cracking the newer Predators.

I would still like to unlock my U7180..... Mine is a newer version, it does not have the communication link option.. Tried this and everything else I could think of and gave up.
Guess I will send it in. Not sure.
