: Injector Pump? - Warranty Maybe?

This is my first message here. Hope I'm doing it right. I have a '97 Suburban with 133K miles. The injector pump was replaced under warrranty at about 112K. It seems to be doing the same thing now. It dies while driving - pull it over - it starts and drives for between 2 and 10 minutes before dying again. Would the injector pump be warranteed since it is fairly new? Do you think it could be something else such as a fuel issue? Thanks.

im going to say pmd.I have gone through four of them. The og,the one when my pump was replaced, mounted the third on a heat sink mounted to the intake( to hot there) now my fourth is away from the heat and doesnt even get warm now...All of the issues you are describing are the classic symptoms of the pmd crapping out..When not if you replace it make sure you buy a remote heatsink and mount it In front of the radiator,or in the air box..

forgot to mention, you my want to start looking on ebay for one becuase your symptoms are only going to get worse. When my last one went out it would run fine then die and start right back up.after about 3 days of this it got to the point where i couldnt drive more than 10 feet without it dying.Replace it now becuase it will leave you stranded...expect to pay about $150 on ebay for brand new and then about $200 for the heatsink kit..I wass lucky and found a pump rebuilder that replaces the pmd on every rebuild no matter how it tests,Paid $20 each with a 30 day warr..I bought 2 of them..Im going to keep one as a spare in my truck from now on.

I would start with the fuel supply to the IP. Are the fuel and air filters clean? Do you hear the LP when you turn the key? when it's started can you open the bleed on the filter and have it put out fuel or does it die?

I don't think you would still be under warranty. Repairs are covered for 12k miles, which you have passed already.....

It should be covered for 12/12 like all gm shlock. Has it been a year since 112,000 miles ago? Connectors and grounds will stall it as well as things like loose pins on the PMD.

Stall, Die, restart, is classic symptom of PMD fail, but before condemning 100% check all wiring 1st, while doing some R&D on mine we "broke" my remote harness, and was having intemittent shutdowns. Problem was loose female pin socket on my remote harness, so there is credibility in checking wiring 1st, also check to make sure your grounds are good, GM ground plane is notorious for intermittent shorts. QMs reference to IP fuel supply is correct if you are stalling while driving or low power, plugged fuel & air filter unless solid plugged, or loss of lift pressure generally does not cause shutdown.

The Bill Heath kit is one I'm using now 7yr warranty with these is something to think about, John Kennedy sells a good kit also, it's the one I started with, IMO though that kit is best located out of the engine bay. On the horizon is a REMARK-Q kit supposedly the last one you will ever need, too new to say for sure IMO, couple of fails reported on the test models reported on The Diesel Page, mixed results there I can't give 100% thumbs up on that one yet, maybe when the get the bugs worked out I'll think differently.

Thanks for all the help. It sounds like the PMD. I found one on E-Bay. 95-6.5, I think it's the same place you bought yours. I was wondering how you made out? Also, I need to get this truck up and running. What do you think about just replacing the PMD this time and doing the heat sink next time it happens. I'm thinking about buying 2 so I won't have to go through this next time.

the ones i got from ebay were like $20.They both work fine.As far as remote mounting later.I think it would behoove you to do it now.First in order to replace the old pmd you will have to pull in intake manifold and move the pump to remove. So there a chance of not getting the pump exactly where it was before. If you remote mount it takes a total of ten minutes to do and lessonsa the chance of the pmd failing from heat.Keep in mind though the ones of ebay ( if there the same ones i got) dont come with heat paper since they are used.you can buy it at most electronic parts stores, radio shack, fry's has a whole isle of it,ect..
but like you said you need to get it up and running mounting it to the pump isnt goignto hurt it,thats where it was in the first place.I would go ahead and mount it to the pump while you order a heat sink then remount it to the heat sink. sounds like a lot of work but the heat sink is well worth the money...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/rockon.gif

95-6.5, is the heat sink what the PMD is mounted on when it's put into a remote location. Would it come included in one of these Bill Heath kits I read about here? I think the kit comes with a long harness aso the PMD can be mounted under the radiator and a PMD and, hopefully, a heat sink. Would the whole job be easier if I just went straight to a remote kit. I found them on the net and probably could get one in a couple of days. Since I'm only a weekend mechanic at best if it saves me having to mess with the intake manifold I'll probably go for it. Thanks a lot for your help on this.

if its the kit that costs around $400 then i thinkit does come with everything.I dont have one of bill heaths kits so i really cant say for sure. But yes if you buy the complete kit you will happy you did.I dont think i've ever heard one bad thing about remote mounting the pmd.

Bill Heath's kit is complete with harness, FSD & cooler plate, FSD is potted to the cooler plate.
