I have 120k miles on my 01 Dmax CC/LB right now and it's practically paid off. I love the truck and don't see any reason to buy another one newer. I drive about 1000 miles a week for my job (no towing), which means I am going to hit 250k miles within the next 2.5 years. I would like to start planning now on what to do when I get to that point. I am not getting rid of the truck. It is in superb shape, and I do not want to repurchase or reinstall all of my accessories. Do I plan on having the engine rebuilt, or should I plan on replacing the motor and/or transmission? If I bought a used motor, would I receive the 100k mile warranty on the remaining miles from GM? What is the best way to go?

Why would you want to rebuild it 100,000 miles ahead of schedule ???

overhaul is dependent on condition of engine, if maintained could go longer than recommended time interval. keith

when it dies, then do it. If the motor runs good, leave it alone. Dont mess with whats not broke. That motor will run alot longer then 250k with proper care.

I feel good about getting to 250k. I would only do it if it crapped out after 250k. Rebuild or new motor?

When the engine goes, get a new one from GM and rebuild the orginal for a project truck.):h

When my truck hits 250K miles, I plan to do some pretty extensive maintanence on it . . . . you know:
1. Change the oil
2. Change the tranny fluid & filter
3. Change the fuel filter

Fire it up & drive off down the road :)

Seriously, unless you are dogging the truck in some way or pulling real heavy loads, I would expect this engine to go at least 400K befor needing any serious work. The only reason to do an overhaul is if something is broke (spun bearing, etc.) The bottom 1/2 of these trucks seams to be very stout & excluding a "catasrophic" (sp) parts failure, it should not need an overhaul for quite a while beyond 250K.

Unless you just want another motor available for a quick swap . . . just in case :)

Rebuild or new motor ? Well I'd take it to someone like Eric, let them tear it down, tell you what a overhaul would cost Vs a new one. Then make a simple financial decesion. I think you've got a LOT of miles to go before you start worrying about that. With proper maintenance its not that hard to get 200k on a gasser.

Since it is nearly paid for, keep it. Start putting bucks in the bank specifically for a new one down the road. Better to get a little interest than pay it to someone else. Maybe you old one will last long enough for you to accumulate savings that will let you cash out the next one. Keep doing that and you may never need to make monthly payments to some bank or credit company.

Shoot! If you’re driving a thousand mile/week, by 250,000 miles you’ll just be getting good and broken in. It’s those short trips and lots of starts, like I do, that brings on the wear. When it gets to that milestone have a party, buy it a new filter, send us some pictures.

I woudnt dare touch it at 250k !! It should go for alot more than that if its taken care of. I would say 500k, but once you get there might as well say what the hell and see how long it will go.

Two ways to own a vehicle. Trade in often or drive them literally into the ground.
