Hello,

How do I adjust the TV cable so my trans shifts earlier from 1st to second? Right now it sort of jerks, and I need to adjust it. Any detailed description of how to do this would be fantastic!

I looked on Alldata at my shop, but believe it or not it's section on the 6.2l DSL K10 tells me that I have a carburetor! And it tells me to adjust it! http://gm-diesel.com/diesel/vbull/ubb/rolleyes.gif

on a gas engine I do it like this, maybe you can adapt my method?:

Push the big D shaped button on the linkage and slide the cable forward (towards the radiator). A couple of notches at a time and test drive it.

The propper adjustment procedure is to find the D shaped button and depress it fully with a screwdriver, while holding it down push the center plastic cable housing toward the firewall as far as it will go, release screwdriver. Grab the throttle shaft on the injection pump and rotate it to full throttle. When the TV cable bottoms out it will pull the center plastic cable housing past the D shaped button like a ratchet. Just a small amount of movement will change the shifting characteristics a lot. Test drive.:)

dont get to far out of whack. The 700 needs proper cable adjustment and its very critical to its life. Since the cable controls pressure, if your pressure is too low......

Best way I have found to ensure its adjusted correct is to start from a stop and drive as light as you can, as soon as it starts the 1-2 shift, matt it. It should downshift back to first, if so, your good. If not.. adjust

It should downshift back to first, if so, your good. If not.. adjust But you see, on flat ground when I start softly and ease it into second, it shifts fine and on time. If I accelerate quickly, however, the truck jerks from first to second. As much, when I am going slow at high RPM's on flat ground (which I DONT want to do) it shifts late into second, as I am slowing down and jerks a lot. Hills are another matter. It will hang in first forever on a hill no matter how high the RPM's, then eventually shift to second, with a big jerk. Even if I am going easy up a hill, it still eventually shifts when the truck is moving too slow and is incorrect. It downshifts alright I guess, although I have noticed that while going down a steep hill it doesn't always downshift on time.

Follow the procedure that D. Camilleri set forth above and the cable adjustment will be correct. You can "tailor" the adjustment by carefully moving the cable adjuster ratchet one or two teeth in the direction you want the shift "feel" to go, but be careful!

As dmaxallitech said, the very life to this trans is wholly dependant on T.V. cable adjustment! It's very sensitive to pressure changes. When you lengthen the cable to soften the shift and lower the speed at which it shifts, you are dropping the T.V. pressure which causes the clutches to slip if it gets too low!

I have seen several 700's with burned clutches because a well-meaning tech tried to make a customer happy by softening the upshift.

Easiest way is to remove air cleaner, look at rear of driver side(lh) cylinder head, there will be a metal bracket with a black plastic square clip protruding and a thin cable running through it. The thin cable attaches to a steel rod that runs under the intake manifold to the injection pump linkage(bottom) as you move the injection pump throttle linkage by hand you should see where the cable moves on the rear of the head. At the top of the bracket is where the silver D shaped adjustment piece is. Hope this helps.:)

+1

That method has always worked best for me as well.

I have an 82 6.2/700R4 combo and my tranny seems to shift into 3rd gear and up too fast. Would this TV cable adjustment be my problem too?

6.2 Blazer, It's possible. Try moving the adjustment one or two notches toward the rear of the engine. (has the effect of shortening/tightening the cable, lengthening the housing) Having the cable too tight is better than too loose. It mearly raises the shift spped and firmness. Too loose on the adjustment and the pressure drops. Leads to trans clutch slippage and burned clutches.

My tranny just seems to fall on its face... it shifts fine from 1-2 but it falls on its face from 2-3... when i'm driving in dirve(not over drive) my tranny shifts through all its gears before it gets to 35-40 MPH. Something just doesnt seem right to me. Do i have to remove anything to get to the cable to be able to adjust it... where exactly is it located?

The adjusting block is at the very rear of the drivers side cylinder head, very near the firewall. I don't remember having to move anything out of the way, but I do remember is a 'D' shaped button on the top thats very hard to press, but that will release the cable guide and allow you to slide it.

6.2 Blazer, have you checked your fluid recently? Both for level and signs of contamination, particularly of the blackened burnt clutch plate variety? If fluid is brown or black (happened to my old '90 Blazer) then it needs to be rebuilt.
