: I broke my tank selector switch

This morning I noticed the fuel gauge was almost on empty. I filled the tanks up a few days ago. I tried switching back and forth between the left and right tanks to get the fuel gauge to register, I couldn't here the motorized valve. Well I was too zealous and snapped the plastic rocker switch off the switch body. Can I short to wires to get one of the tanks registering until I get a new switch? I tried using a voltmeter to figure out which two wires had continuity with the lever in the LH and RH position. I got continuity on both the left and right side leads with the selector in the RH position and no continuity on anything in the RH position. It doesn't make sense to me. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tice

what valve selector are you using?

BTW, do you have 1 fuel pump or two?

The valve selector I believe is the stock one, I don't know. As far as fuel pumps, I believe everything is stock. Did these trucks come with two stock fuel pumps? I've had the truck just a few months and have been trying to get it running. I haven't looked into the fuel system because it has run and the fuel gauge registered with the tank selector switch in one of the positions, I don't recall which one now.

OK, I just crawled under the truck. I don't know if the truck has more than the one fuel pump. But I did find a broken wire. On the inside side of the passenger tank, towards the middle, front to back, of the tank I found a metal plate covering what might be the fuel tank selector solenoid. There was I believe a yellow/black and a pink/black wire coming from it and going into a bundle of wires. the yellow/black wire was broken. Maybe why one tank did not resister fuel when the cab fuel tank selector switch was switched. Because I broke the in cab fuel tank selector switch can I just jump two of the wires together until I get a new switch?

You are aware that that switch is just clipped on to begin with right? Pull the wiring harness through the hole in the dash and you should be able to pop that switch back on, at least good enough to switch the tanks once if you want.

if everything is stock there should only be one pump.

it sounds like the wire is for the sending unit. it shouldn't have anything to do with the valve. how many wires are going to your switch? i believe there should be 4 ground, power, and one for each sending unit. check to make sure you have power at the switch. if a fuse blew it won't allow the switch to actuate the selector valve.

I went out to the truck and plugged the tank selector switch back in. I could hear a faint whirring sound when I flipped the switch, so I guess the switch, even though it's broken and won't stay together, works. And the tank selector solenoid also works. I guess I'll go fill up the truck next, maybe I burned more fuel last week than I thought.

i guess having empty tanks would cause some problems too :)

if you jump the 2 wires above each other, I think it switches to the left and when you x them it switches to the right
