: Why in a Diesel
dieselfumes57 01-20-2005, 12:04 PM Why in a diesel when you change the oil its dirty again (rotella) as soon as you start it up. Some guy at the oil change place said to run lucas because it stays clean like a gasser when changed. Any input would help.
Bill Gisse 01-20-2005, 12:22 PM No LUCAS in my diesel.Your oil looks dirty right after cahnge because all the old oil isn't drained out. Be sure its hot when you drain it, that way less crud settles in the little low places that don't drain and also wait for the filter passages to finish draining. You shouldn't need any oil additive, it only serves to change the characteristics of the additives already in the oil and the change may not be for the good.
Mike_in_Wisc 01-20-2005, 12:52 PM Also, (in addition to what Bill just said) as far as OIL additives, my stealer garanteed me any additives found in oil voids warranty. Fuel additives are OK as long as no alcahol.
dmaxalliTech 01-20-2005, 12:54 PM Diesel engines have soot in them, charecteristic.
If the oil does not catch all that soot (black oil) then where does it go? It stays in the engine. Not good. If your oil needs an additive, you need to change your oil (pun intended)
WanaDmxsub 01-21-2005, 12:21 AM Because you can't see the clean oil on the **** dip (cable) stick!
ob_1jr 01-21-2005, 01:22 AM I am running Delvac 1 for about 1300 miles now and the oil looks nearly as clean as when I put it in. I really have to look at the dipstick to check the oil level. The old oil was some nasty junk. Although, I only have about 19400 miles on my truck. That may have made a difference and it is winter time so I can't really get on it either. I will have to see how long it takes the oil to go black when I am able to turn my programmer back up.
briano 01-21-2005, 08:52 AM diesels naturally turn oil this way..they are harder on oil versus a gasser. from all the ones I seen and helped change, its normal.
gearhead 01-21-2005, 09:11 AM my oil was allways real clean untill I put on the EDGE

Take BRIANO's (AKA BRAINO Etc. Etc.) word for it. According to a recent post it looks like he has spent a good amount of time looking at his dirty oil as it sits on his driveway. I hear he also likes to flush his system by pouring new oil in and letting it flow through the drainplug.
(Sorry - couldn't resist :) ) We never forget!
marcdeluca 01-21-2005, 10:28 AM A healthy dose of lp seems to keep the oil clean. I have 11K on my truck, no oil changes, running 50% lp (I get the same diesel mileage as lp mileage) and the oil looks like the day I bought the truck. I also have a bypass filter, but they don't do much for the color of the oil, since soot is submicronic and can't be filtered out easily.

Pro400exc 01-21-2005, 03:48 PM Hey Guys....
A diesel mechanic told me to run a qt or two of tranny fluid in the oil to keep the engine clean...Actually a few diesel mechanics told em this..But is that just for big trucks?
Also he told me put a qt or two in the diesel....cleans out the fuel system...
I dunno..whats ya'lls take?

I dunno..whats ya'lls take? Not in my truck! IMHO there is not enough lubricity in tranny fluid for engine use.

I dunno..whats ya'lls take?Yeah weve ran into this at work, (CAT) where guys ran ATF in the fuel of their newer HEUI and MEUI and blew the tips off thier injectors. Some were only injector changes, and others ended up with motor jobs. ATF will aid in lubricity in low suphur diesel, but is not safe in new diesel engines. Also I wouldnt run it in the Oil of a new engine. Thats what Detergent oils are for. The oil is black cause the detergents do their job and clean soot and carbon and keep it in supesion and soluble so it can be drained. If it really bothers you, Use oil sampling at oil chages and have them tested. I get mine tested at the Cat dealer, they will give you the SOS bottles and wont charge an arm and a leg. They give you a printout of the resuts. Do this at every change and you can keep tabs on abnormal wear and even see when something is starting to let go, or if you have coolant or dirt entry.
MaineMax 01-23-2005, 11:51 AM From what I have been taught/read, the color of oil means absolutely nothing.

true. frequent and consistent oil changes are the best thing you can do is what i've been taught.

Yeppers!!! Proper intervals and Hot oil is the key to a good oil chage!!!
