Techs,

Is there anyway that I can tell if the shaft has been replaced? The dealership said that they replaced it but the problem of the popping and clanging is back after only one week. I would say they just popped some grease in there and sent it home with me.

Any Suggestions?

As I posted above, my truck is in today for oil and lube and filters. I has the rattle, so I asked about changing out the intermediate steering shaft. The service manager at this place said that now GM is NOT advising changing (apparently the damm shafts are all exactly the same) and in fact lubing is the only fix. One of the Techs on the board agreed - see the post on this above. So if your dealer changed the shaft, you may be in exactly the same situation as you were before.

@15K pulled my shaft for the rattle it had less than a teaspoon of grease, all on the bottom of the inner shaft. Used the GM kit lubed the shaft per kit instructions, all quiet now. For how long we'll see. I do believe that like front and rear differential lube GM thinks they saved money.

If the new replacement shafts are made by the same company (they probably are) save yourself the aggraviation and time at the dealer, grease yours with the kit.

It's an easy job, just look around this site for pictures on howto. Good luck.
