Started my Express up after sitting for two days and no power steering or brakes. I searched and can't believe how widespread this is with GM. I will do the synthetic fluid swap to see if that solves it.
The search came up with way to many results and GM needs to fix this crap. Cheap out on the steering and brake systems, hell it's not that important. Imagine towing down a nice grade and this happens:mad:. Rant off

work in framingham,if you grab the p/s pulley and pull outward, and it comes out more than1/4 inch or so the shafts broken, and will need new p/s pump.the brakes go ,because they are hydraulic assist from the p/s pump

Happened to mine at 21k miles. Dealer replaced the P/S pump and the master Cylinder under warranty. It's a known problem and seems to be fairly common. The first time it happened I waited a bit and tried it again and it worked properly, a few weeks later I tried a day or 2 to get it working and finally had the dealer tow it in and fix it.
Same sort of happened with mine at 8000 miles. Valve between power steering pump and brake failed. They use the power steering pump to assist brakes for more stopping power under heavy load. If the valve goes bad then every time you turn the steering wheel your brakes will come on.
Dealer replace valve and everything has worked fine since.

I had the same issue. 06' duramax sat for a few days and had no steering or brakes on start-up. Towed to the dealer where it statrted working fine, gm refused to replace anything. Said the issue had to be replicated by the dealer to authorize repairs. Best part was they listed the cause as "customer overfilling power steering resivoir!" Nice..
