: chip replacement have questions.
95-6.5 01-19-2005, 09:13 PM I replaced my ship tonight with a aftermarket chip..things i noticed. The turbo used to be pretty loud now its about 4x's quieter, also when flooring the truck there is a lot more black smoke than before.Only when floored though..
The getup and go has increased and i can tell a difference in the ammount of power it has from a stand still.im guessing that the black smoke is from the increase in fuel.i can understand why my turbo seems to be quieter though?????
any thoughts??
Texas Diesel Guy 01-19-2005, 10:09 PM If yours does the same as mine, more boost doesn't necessarily=more whistle, makes the sweetest sound at about 3psi, then goes quiet until you get above 10. Need a gauge to monitor pressures, much more accurate than the ear.
The black smoke is definitely the increased fuel quantity.
95-6.5 01-19-2005, 10:18 PM I've got the gauges sitting on my desk ( thats where they do the most good you know) I just havent had the time to install them.Since i bought a pre turbo pyro i nowhave to find the time to pull the turbo off to drill/tap..Maybe this weekend.
Black smoke/ with less turbo noise sounds like low boost condition.

no im pretty sure the boost is there.I havent installed my gauges yet but when my wastegate solonoid went out and i had low boost, there was a little bit more smoke and not nearly the power. Before when i would stomp on it from a standstill it would give a nice big puff of smoke. Now it does the same but is giving a continous trail of smoke. If i keep my foot off the throttle and drive normal there is no smoke.the boost is there becuase i know what it feels like with no boost.
95-6.5 01-20-2005, 03:42 AM forgot to add-tranny seems to shift at ahigher rpm when floored also.Shifts normal, but when you stomp on it ,it shifts at around 4200rpm instead of 3300 the way it used to..
What do you have by way of boost control? 4200rpm is higher than my engine has ever gone mine has never gone above 3700rpm. With 3.42 gears I think I would hit the speed limiter way before I got the rpm's that high. As a matter of fact I don't even know if my chip removed the stock speed limiter. It's hard to say without putting my hands on it, but unless your turbo has locked up or sheared all the compressor blades off you're going to have some boost no matter how screwed up your wastegate control might be, but my experience is black smoke = not enough O2. Your trans is input and load sensitive. If it recieving less input from engine due to low boost it would shift later to compensate.
95-6.5 01-20-2005, 06:14 AM at normal driving there is no smoke what so ever.I only get black smoke when i punch the gas to the floor.Used to the smoke would go away, now it pours out.I am getting boost i can hear the turbo and feel the engine pulling real hard,I was just concerned that the turbo ws not as loud as before.I'll have to look at the shifting point again.Last night when driving to work i was at a stop sign and just punched it went from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds according to my watch and was shifting around 4200rpms,but like i said if i drive it normal there is no smoke or anything and it shifts normal.I was mainly wondering what the chip can control and change.I'll be installing my gauges soon.I think i must have gotten one of those trucks that were just naturaly fast.My brother has the same year, mods, and i can out pull him and out run hi any day of the week.My truck also sounds different then his.The chip i pulled out was factory.
i have the 4.11 rear end and his is the 3.42 i believe.Mine is a heavy duty and his is the light duty..
CanadianRigger 01-20-2005, 10:29 AM 0 - 60 in 8.5 seconds? Are you serious? I'm truly jealous if thats the case. If your making times like that then you've gotta be making some boost for sure.
4200 rpm? I wouldn't think stock engine guts will last long at those rpms.
Lawn Cher' 01-20-2005, 01:37 PM I think i must have gotten one of those trucks that were just naturaly fast.My brother has the same year, mods, and i can out pull him and out run him any day of the week... I have the 4.11 rear end and his is the 3.42 I believe.Mine is a heavy duty and his is the light duty..Well there's your answer right there, the rear end gearing. You've got 20% better mechanical advantage in moving your truck off the line than your brother, so it is gonna be faster and pull harder. I doubt that it has much to do with the natural born fastness of your particular engine build.
95-6.5 01-20-2005, 06:57 PM im going to try and take a video this weekend showing my spedo kinda like c-rigger did on his video.anybody knwo where i can host it for free?http://dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif
Im going to have s top watch running this time since i was using my watch last time and just noted the second hand when i stomped on it and noted again when i hit the 60 mark.
CanadianRigger 01-20-2005, 10:06 PM I can put it up with mine but i can only accept a 3 meg file through my email. File transfer through msn or yahoo would work though.
95-6.5 01-20-2005, 10:56 PM Sweet.Thanks..
