As you may have seen in my last thread (01 Suburban leaking antifreeze), I now have a problem with the fan. How do I get it off? Is there a special tool or something? I found out that the water pump is leaking at the backplate. Instead of messing with that gasket, I'm gonna go ahead and change the pump. Got a rebuilt from NAPA for $91. I've got the pump off just can't get the fan off. Help please.

There is a special spanner tool to hold the pulley, but the "top secret flat-rate" method is to remove the upper fan shroud, leave the belt on, put a 1 7/16" or 1 1/2" end wrench on it at the 12 o'clock position and take a baseball swing at the top of the wrench with a BFH. My batting average is about .900, sometimes it takes two swings. Also known as the "poor man's impact wrench"

I think my average would be about the same as richieracket. Besides I already have the pump off with fan still attached so I'll probably head over to NAPA or Autozone to see if they have the tool. If not I guess I will be overcoming and adapting. Thanks for the info.

For the cost of the tool, couldn"t you just buy a new fan blade? my $0.02 worth (or worthless if you prefer)

Well, I got it off using an old spanner wrench a guy had. Put it back on after installing the pump and used the belt as a wrench. Note to self, next time remove fan before pump. Thanks all.
