No, only change the internal when rebuilding..and use a Allison spin on..:D

I did mine a few weeks ago and with a standard "pull the plug and drain" I got a little under 7 Qts. I changed the spin on, cleaned the magnet and put back exactly 7 Qts. It checked just right on the stick after a test drive/leak check.

Don't forget the magnet and I suggest you pick up a spare at your Allison dealer when you get your filter... They are cheap and it is a lot easier/quicker to put a clean magnet on a new filter, prefil, roll under and swap new for old. Clean the original magnet and put it in your toolbox for the next time...

I believe it actually holds 12.7 Qts. if it were completely empty (IIRC anyway!) So essentially you only get about 1/2 of it changed...

Where exactly is the magnet?

The magnet sits on top of the external Allison filter. Get a extra one from a Ally dealer or one of the vendors on this site...

And it never falls / get knocked off accidentally. I didn't see anything but smooth metal when I changed mine. Only 10k easy miles.
