: Dextron 6 Synthetic ATF in aftermarket transmissions?
Josh2002cc 02-21-2008, 08:30 PM Okay, The time has come and I am going to be rebuilding my transmission with a TTS kit and alto clutches along with some other things. Now my question is, Can I use Valvoline full synthetic DEXTRON 6 ATF fluid???? My supplier says it is used on all 2006 and above GM/Isuzu vehicles, so...will this work in my aftermarket trans build?? Thank you all.
Josh

BC_DIESEL 02-22-2008, 12:43 AM I use Amsoil in my tranny and never had an issue either.

travrazz 02-22-2008, 08:43 AM I just had a SC IV w/ 1058 put in. They just put in regular ole Dex 3 to start with. They told me to do a complete trans flush at 10 - 15k miles and then put in the good Dex 6. I have about 3000 miles on the new trans in only two weeks and loving every mile. You'll love the feel of a built trans.

Why did they not put Dex 6 in from the getgo? Dex 6 is an ok choice, but all the info got on it still lists it as a semi-synthetic fluid. Transynd or Amsoil would be better IMO.:)
TIMTHECARMAN2004 02-22-2008, 01:01 PM We went by what Suncoast suggests. They recommend running Dex/Merc for the first 10 to 15 thousand and then flushing the transmission. I have done 37 SCIV this way and never had one fail. So we stick to what they have recommended. I don't see why a person couldn't use the synthetic to start, shouldn't have a problem but this is just how I have done it.

Cool, good to know. We have done several SC builds as well. We just always stick to Dex6, same thing, no failures. I know dex3/dex6 have some different properties, I'd be curious to find out why they recommend that.

What is the ? Heath?

Well I just called them. I was told that they have always used Dex3 because it is a true lubricant. They say that the viscosity of a synthetic becomes so thin that it could possibly either cause leaks, or damage parts. They did say that you could use whatever, just as long as it is a lubricant.
Heath 02-22-2008, 04:09 PM What is the ? Heath?
I didn't understand the ?. How does it work or how long will it work or will dex 6 work?
I'm hard of reading:)
Josh2002cc 02-22-2008, 10:01 PM Heath,
Will dextron 6 valvoline synthetic work in my tranny after it gets built??
TIM Z 02-22-2008, 10:04 PM Good luck with your build Josh!!! I started off with Full transynd fluid, no probs at all, Nice and red! Also easier to do it now than have to try to flush the cooler out when you do eventually switch to synthetic. Allison reccomends Transynd and thats all i needed to know.

Mobil 1 lets the clutches bite better and I believe the TES 295 is even better. TES 295 will protect your Alli when nothing else will. McRat smoked 2 converters on the starting line and never hurt the clutches. That's protection. :D
Heath 02-23-2008, 08:37 AM Ya, the valoline will work.
mplteddy 02-23-2008, 11:00 AM Mike, TES 295? You lost me with that one. Maybe it's too early in the morning...
Heath 02-23-2008, 01:08 PM TES 295, is Allison's spec, like dex 6 is GM's spec or mercon is Ford spec. They may or may not all be interchangeable, just need to say on the bottle. For example, our torque drive is TES-295 and dex III qualified but not dex 6. Our ATF is dex 3 and dex 6, but not TES-295. It's quite the puzzle.
mplteddy 02-23-2008, 06:56 PM Got it, need to read the fine print I guess. Thanks.

Since when is Amsoil Torque Drive TES-295?
I guess I didn't see it on the list.
Heath 02-23-2008, 08:18 PM It's not on the certified list, but it does meet the qualification. The torque-drive's only purpose for being made was to be a sub for the transynd.
Here's the brochure on it:

deadsquirrel 02-24-2008, 12:35 PM so is transyd tes-295??
custom8726 02-24-2008, 12:47 PM I ended up using bolth dex 6 & 3 when my trranny got built, I did'nt relize the tranny guy filled it with dex 6 for the tranny dyno. So when I got my truck back together I filled it up the rest of the way with dex-3. So after alot of calling around I was assured they were fine to mix I just would not get the prolonged service interval I would have with just the dex-6. I am going to drain the whole system when I get to 10k on the tranny and switch to dex-6. Good luck with your build!!!
Heath 02-24-2008, 06:19 PM so is transyd tes-295??
Yes.
tinman22 02-25-2008, 09:20 PM so is this tranny built or what?
