: High Idle + Wind Blowing Into Garage =
towin43 01-18-2005, 11:26 PM A few degrees below zero this morning so I went out to the garage, opened the door, and fired up the LLY to let her warm up while I went back inside to brush my teeth. High idle is activated so after a few seconds it kicked in. Went back out to the garage after 3 - 4 minutes to leave and entire garage is fogged with diesel smoke. Even though the back of the truck is right at the door opening so that the exhaust normally exits right outside, there was enough wind this morning to blow it all right back into the garage. This things smokes like a chimney when the high idle is on so the smoke was thick. By the time I got into the truck, I stunk of diesel fumes. Went out over lunch and got in the truck and the inside stunk of diesel fumes. Drove home for lunch with the windows down in 10 degree weather to air it out. Left it outside in the drive with all the windows down to further air it out. Garage still stunk of fumes so I open it all up to air out. As of 10:30 this evening, garage still stinks and the inside of the DMax still stinks. Note to self: Pull truck into drive EVERYTIME to warm up. What a dumbaCensored . Wife not happy either because laundry room off of garage stinks as well.
skoryaro2 01-19-2005, 03:55 AM Been there, done that! Mine now gets gets parked head into the garage, started for about 15 seconds and backed out immediately to warm up with garage door closed :)
Autoed 01-19-2005, 07:49 AM Not a problem here, wife has too much junk in the garage for mine to fit it!
Minn-Kota 01-19-2005, 08:59 AM Ain't it great???
9W3-HD 01-19-2005, 09:48 AM I had mine backed in the garage when I was tapping the exaust manifold, started it when I was done, high idle kicked in, I had all the garage doors open, my roommate came out and said I was fumeagating her out of the kitchen, yeah it was that bad, kind of made me laugh though.):h
Sollly 01-19-2005, 09:54 AM The ones that aren't listed that is. I warm mine up every day in the garage on hight idle. Not so much as a wiff of smoke. It does stink though.
dmacy 01-19-2005, 10:00 AM Mine smokes big time when cold. Seems like it happens as soon as high idle kicks in. I learned early on to back it out of the garage as soon as possable. Mine even smokes after it has warmed up for a mile or two on the road. Then it is fine.

None, PerSe. Mine only smokes when it's really cold out (below 10*F). By smoke, I don't think we're talking the thick black variety. Just the white smoky steamy kind of smoke that makes the diesel exhaust just hang in the air.

I have never started it when it's -10 so I'll have to watch for it.
Enigma 01-19-2005, 11:10 AM Hehe, had that happen to me once (and only once) as well. Exhaust points outside the garage, usually works just fine. First time the high idle kicked in however the exhaust just filled up the garage. Went to pull the truck out, couldn’t hold my breath on the way to the truck noooo that would have been smart. Lungs were on fire, eyes poring trying to quell their burning, ahhh the white cloud of diesel death. -:t
Backed the truck out to the driveway and left the door open, that stuff just hung in the garage, had to get the old box fan out to vent it all. Never will I do that again, now I fire up the truck wait for oil pressure to build and back it out of the garage, there it can high idle all it wants.
Goldneye 01-19-2005, 01:54 PM Just a thought, can you hook-up a tube like a aluminum dryer vent hose to the tail pipe and run it out the garage?
partsguy662 01-19-2005, 01:58 PM Just a thought, can you hook-up a tube like a aluminum dryer vent hose to the tail pipe and run it out the garage? There is exhaust hose made for this purpose (every dealership has them, for obvious reasons) The problem is, the hose is quite spendy, and you'll probably need an adaptor for it to fit over the tailpipe.....Could be done, but I think just driving out of the garage is a much, much cheaper option
towin43 01-19-2005, 02:11 PM I didn't need to give my wife more ammunition to hate my truck! Doh!
Kendall69 01-19-2005, 03:52 PM Love the smell of diesel smoke in the mornin....
Got Juice? 01-19-2005, 03:56 PM Love the smell of diesel smoke in the mornin....
Yup, and a Camel Filter and a big slug of Coffee....
yitsock 01-19-2005, 07:04 PM Well, I'm one of those lucky enough that my truck doesn't fit in my garage, about 1' too short, too many bike and another car in there anyway. BUT, this morning I had to open garage door after I fired the truck up to shovel some snow... went in, walked back out the garage and it was FULL of white smoke, just the way the wind was blowing... like others said.. eyes tearing, clothes stinking... however... still smelled pretty good... :)
02B12S 01-19-2005, 09:00 PM Since I have no garage, I don't have that problem. Started fine this morning at -9 and no block heater pluged in.
As for your issue (smoke in garage) I have a friend who uses a dryer hose over the end of the tailpipe, The hose is routed outside the garage door to around the side. She has no problems with the fumes getting into the garage and house.
olskool53 01-19-2005, 09:13 PM Yea I back mine up to my garage, so I can loadup in the morning and roll(with pipe rack she don't fit in garage). When its cold i have to put it at the top of the driveway. Sucks to loadup! That smoke lingers for hours in a garage!
Minn-Kota 01-19-2005, 09:29 PM Mine bellows some light blue smoke when its pretty cold out for a while until it warms up a little. It really hangs in the garage nice.
ricklaut 01-19-2005, 11:55 PM I did EXACTLY the same thing the other day. Same note to self. Same PO'd wife.
dmaxalliTech 01-20-2005, 12:35 AM You mean you can still smell diesel fumes? I think its been over a year since I smelt that. Everyonece and a while, I getta a stinky gasser in... but stinky diesel?
dmacy 01-20-2005, 05:46 AM I love the smell of that diesel but when the smoke is so thick you can't see two feet in front of you or take a breath it is a little much. Left running in a two car garage on high idle cold, this doesn't take long.
Thinkmoto 01-20-2005, 06:30 PM I love the high idle nothing like a smokin rattlin diesel at 5am...especially when the g/f tells you diesel smoke makes her horny:cool:
bob camire 01-20-2005, 06:43 PM are these engines not designed for warmup with high idle ??
