Anybody have one? Any good?

the only one i've personally ever sold, was to a local guy and he noticed better throttle response and of course a little more wistle, but i never asked him about a mileage increase.

It wasn't much of an increase to make you go :eek:maybe like this:( . My entire air box is open to the engine compartment, it probrably sucks in alot of hot air. I think it dereases crankcase vacuum and gets dirty, maybe make an aluminum box for it with a lid and use fender vents, but then there rain mud. So what the #^%^&?

I was thinking about getting one. I need better gas mileage...

I like mine, it's much better than that hunk that SS sells. I didn't notice a power difference, but I didn't when I put an intake on my Dodge either. The way I look at it is it can't hurt; more filter area and a less restrictive tube; maybe more hot air, but maybe not, you'll get that with most intakes on most vehicles. If you decide to get one, try to get a ProGuard 7 filter with it. They filter much better than the standard AFE filters do.

I've got one. Definitely better than SS one. I'd like to seal it up a bit better, maybe add a fender vent and put a clear plexiglass lid on it. It's a quick install and looks pretty clean

I Dont Understand Whats So Bad About The Ss One I Mean Why Do Some Of Yall Think The Afe Is Worth The Extra 120.00 ????

Chevy Diesel Guy
02-24-2008, 05:17 PM
the afe is only better because it helps keep the filter cleaner longer and it will help keep cool air concentrated around the filter better. But its not worth the extra 120...just take the AFE design and make your own..

WhiteK2500, could we get a picture of your intake? I might have to pay you instead.

I bought the SS one, unfortunatly. The inverted cone idea... as cool as i thought it was, is stupid. There is PLENTY of room in there, just use a full closed end cone. The inner cap FELL OFF my intake, and if i didnt have a MAF sensor screen it would have gone into my compressor, then down the hatch into a head, it was proply too big to go thru the valve but it still, thats a lot of damage none-the-less.

The inner cap fell off off yours too North?? At least you were lucky enough to have the screen, mine got sucked right into the compressor where it dented/dinged up the most of the blades! i was lucky i was only like 1/2 mile from my buddies house so i pulled in there and got it sorted out, but i thought i blew my turbo...it was a bad deal. IMPO i'd stay away from SS's intake, it's a little janky..that is unless you don't mind your turbo getting munched....

Not having this happen is worth the extra $120 to me.

yes, well not extra 120 for me personally, but at least fabbing up a decent one is on my agenda..gonna finally get to put those hours of CAD class to practical work:D haha...what would be a preferred material for an airbox? almost all aftermarket ones i see are made from plastic material, is that because plastic makes a better insulator than metal therefore keeping the inside of the box cooler? or would something along the lines of aluminum, steel, anything else, etc. be best?

Aluminum works well. Steel would retain too much heat. For all thumbs guys like me it's best to pay the $ to buy the pre-made stuff instead of trying to fab something. Would probably end up being cheaper in the long run than a fab attempt from me; definitely better for my mental health.

yes i see your point that's how i usually am lol..but i'm considering doing this the right way. Use autodesk for design then talk to one of my professors about the manufacturing, im sure at least one of them could get me a good deal on the manufacturing aspect of it, especially if it's all done up in CAD. but i'll cross that hurdle when i get to it:rolleyes:

kinda funny the complaint seems to be the filter with the ss one not the style?????

WhiteK2500
02-26-2008, 09:25 AM
Lol cause other then a short peice of tube, that's all the SS one is :D

So if the filter fails, and it's half of the part, then the part is half a failure

Chevy Diesel Guy
02-26-2008, 01:38 PM
yeah ur right, its definitely a poor design, but i didn't even buy their tubing..i bought their downpipe off of 'em and since i was ordering that i thought what the hell why not get the air filter as well. Then i just put a couple of big hose clamps together and tightened that stock tubing down around end of that filter cone. Saved me 50 bucks in the short run...but in the long run im still gonna have to do somethin different....i have had that filter for a while now though so i guess i can say i got my money out of it, but now that its toast im moving on to bigger and better ideas:cool:

The Afe design makes it much easier to enclose and shield from the heat of the engine bay; it pulls air from the same place as the stock airbox. The SS is a hot air intake because of the short tube. You could buy a cone filter and clamp it directly to the turbo and get the same effect.

ive had my ss intake since christmas 2006....i agree with everyone on the part that its a poor design i added a alluminum 3 inch 90 degree bend and put a bigger air filter....then put my ss filter on my car and made a intake for it but for me the filter is a good one....all that is need to finish my intake is a heat sheild like afe and then to remove the snorkel

Chevy Diesel Guy
02-26-2008, 02:32 PM

Why not just go the 97+ air box route?...........filter flows great and probably 1/3 of the cost of the AFE.

Wrong name there is a hyphen between car-part. The junkyard search has the hyphen another autoparts site does not.

Bigger round filter VS. smaller flat panel filter.

the airbox itself is bigger then i would guess?
