Could someone please explain the difference between the two. I am really curious if one is better that the other.

Thank you

I recently purchaseda 2004 2500hd and i think it has the lb7 because the 8th digit is a "1". I am pretty much sticking with this on for years to come but still do not understand why the difference

Its got a diffrent turbo, heads, head covers, glo plugs, but here's the kick..my friend got the lly 2005 and i beat him every time, and i can tell the diffrence in speed, even thu he's got 15 more ponies, for some reason mine sounds and drives with more h/p,and mine is not working right..it TICKS bad...

15 more foot pounds. I think the egr valve increases turbo lag. I have the Z28 to "win" races, the truck is for haulin' stuff.

My brother and I both bought 2004 Duramaxs, mine the LB7, and his the LLY. The LB7 gets better fuel milage, but about 3 MPG. As far as the power, hard to tell, but isn't that what the Edge for? I'll keep my LB7!

my LB7 is dated Nov 03, close to the end of their production

I believe the first LLYs were born in Jan 04

I know I must have one of the last lb7's. If I remember correctly production date was 12/9. At first I was pissed that I missed it by couple days, then found out lly's have egr and cats. lly is a good motor but I prefer no pollution stuff.Of course they were cleaning the parts shelfs when they made mine, lol. NO trouble runs excellent.

A few questions

Does anybody know what the difference is in the turbo (larger, smaller, variable, etc, etc)?

What is the advantage/disadvantage of the modified head to externalize the injectors. Was performance sacrificed to make injector access easier?

Are the new glow plugs better or worse (assuming better but who knows)?

Advantage to High Idle (quicker warmups)?

I guess the end question is can the LLY be built as well as an LB7? I'm assuming if the block is the same, then strength differences would not be an issue, but do the new heads and turbo limit the motor more than an LB7.

The reason I ask is I have been in truck pulling (gassers) and was looking to get into diesel pulling. I have been a GM fan all my life. I know the Cummin's motor is tough to beat, but I would like to try with a Duramax (at least in the Street Stock class).

I know more people are comfortable with the LB7 as it has been around longer and has less emissions equipment (which usually bias's people), but I'm not afraid to tinker with the LLY if it's worth it. I'm looking at a new tow rig which will also compete in the stock diesel (single turbo, no NOS, no Propane, no Water injection) pulling class.

I know the first mod will be the transmission $$$, then I will looking to the engine (trying not to put the cart before the horse).

I have both, 255,000 on my LB7 and 18, 000 on my LLY. If your into drag racing the lb7 is a touch quicker beats the LLY by about 1/2 truck length consistently. Hook a 9000lb trailer behind and make the same run, LLY two truck lengths every time. Never had any problems with my LB7, had a turbo sensor issue on the LLY when I picked it up b nothing else. Either way you will have a great Truck!!!

FYI the Turbo is a VVT variable vane. The LLY is a little louder than the LB7 due to the external injectors.

1. Not Sure what the difference is with the turbo. Maybe someone can chime in on that one.

2. Advantage of the mods to externalize the injectors was aimed soley at making them easier & cheaper to service.

3. Glowplugs work much better in LLY than in LB7

4. High Idle = faster warmups

5. As it stands now there is much more available for LB7 than LLY because LLY is new. In time it will catch up, and GM will slowly work out the bugs.

Since the new emission laws everything gets the LLY.
They stopped building the LB7 Dec.03
