My truck is down! 2001 Ram 2500 4X2 Automatic transmission. I have had it since it was new. Trouble started couple of months ago with the occasional loss of power during acceleration. I would tap pedal a few times and usually that was it. It may go days and never faulter again. Sunday night was first time for this though.. running down interstate (not towing) and all the sudden was like I let off pedal. I would work the pedal and nothing.. It never died just would get down to about 45MPH and cruise along. After mile or two it would pick up.. belch lil smoke and roll on. It did this every few miles for the next 300 miles home. it was scary as heck. I am a pretty fair gas burner mechanic but have no experience on diesels. Local dealership said they dont have good diesel mechanic but I could drop it off and maybe they could see what it was. Said even if they could not fix it I would owe them a min. 1 hour diagnostic. The dealership I bought it new from is closed down! Bad luck all around. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Jamie Bing

Jamie, check your Lift pump on your truck.... it supplies your VP-44 Injection pump with fuel.... if your lift pump goes out (150.00) it can take out the expensive VP44 injection Pump (1400$)

Sounds like that could be the problem. Or TPS or CPS.... is there any codes? Key on-off-on-off-on (3ycyles) the mileage indicator will display a code PXXX..... write it down.

Go to www.nwbombers.com (http://www.nwbombers.com/) and post it in the 911 section. You will have answers within a couple minutes.

Edit: I posted it in the 911 forum for you on Bombers..... I will copy and paste their suggestions as they arrive.

Looks like you need to check your lift pump PSI and have the dealer check your TPS...P1693 usually has a companion code that goes with it (but not always)

thanks.. so is there any simple way to check the pressure?? and do you think that would be the most likely major problem?? any hint as to what the code may be pointing too?? thanks again so much

By their responses, my first guess would be Throttle Position Sensor... Any reputable shop should be able to diagnose a faulty one... the lift pump you need a fuel pressure gauge and isolator to check... many CTD guys run a FP gauge so they do not take out the VP44 Pump.

someone told me i would have to pull my transmission to put in new TPS .. is that true? also one dealer priced an entire housing of some sorts when i asked about TPS said was 450 bucks.. had another online parts store quote me 32.00 for TPS??

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME IN HERE.

TPS should be on the throttle linkage.
Dealer is out to lunch on that one.
I would check with Cummins unless your truck still has dealer warranty left.
