Did it smoke very much when it was started? I have noticed mine smokes blue in the mornings, and it isn't nearly that cold.

Oh yeah she smoked a little.... ....well more than a little; I never plug her in.

duramaxdiesel I started up this morning just as easy as you did, it was 22 below pluged in over night with timer, four hour heat time. I've been vary happy with my rig also, no complaints here! BigRedD/A

Mine has been starting good too. It has been around -45F to -30F here in Alaska. Of course I plug it in. I am using delvac 1 also. The other night it was around -30 and I didn't plug it in, but I had my remote start on timer mode (every three hours).

That timer mode sure does appeal to me. When I finally decide on an alarm/remote start I want that option.

Most remote starts have that. The astro start www.astroflex.com allows you to set the temperature. So if it gets below the preset temperature it will run once every 3 hours. You can also set the run time independantly of the regular run time.

ob_1jr (http://dieselplace.com/forum/member.php?u=6453), what model Clifford do you have? Did you install it yourself or have to get it done?

I had a Clifford 10 years ago and installed it myself and was delighted. 8 years ago, bought another truck and Clifford said I couldn't install it myself - had to have it done by an expert. Paid $1500 and had nothing but problems.

So I'm considering not buying Clifford again unless I can do it myself.

I have the 1.5RS I believe. I had it Professionally installed. I tried in the past on 2 separate trucks to install it myself and it kicked my @$$. I have 8 years as a F-16 avionics technician too. I didn't want to screw anything up on this truck. The installers for directed electronics have to go through training now. I believe the only way clifford warrentys your stuff is if it is professionally installed. Anyway, the install here in Alaska was only $550 for everything installed. This was only a remote start, not an alarm too.

What oil do you have in motor? I am starting fine as well without using a block heater with Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40, but the lowest I have started in was -16F after an overnight low of -23F.

I understand there are some fine Esso synthetic motor oils available in Canada that we cannot get in the USA.

Bingo! I use Esso Synthetic 0W-40. When I was using dino oil I noticed that my oil pressure would take a while to rise. I'd even see the "Check oil pressure" light up in the DIC. Now it takes almost no time.

On another note, did you attend the Four wheel Jamboree last July 31-Aug. 1 in Essex Junction? Later, Nick.

No, I did not attend that event. I am an amateur radio operator and was at an amateur radio event that weekend.

I have been reading about those Esso-Imperial Oil synthetics. It sounds like a trip north of the border for motor oil might be in order.

my uncle had his up in canada with no plug in and his fired up no problem after a week of setting and he said actual temperature was -40 with a 20mph wind .......he said never again would he go up there in the middle of january......but he said the sled ran like a rapped ape ....i wonder why lol......he said the trip was so cold that they did not play a lot because they had to make it to a certain point by a certain time.

Yep, and for the one at Auto Trim Design (astrostart) they wanted 700. At least I don't have to make a terribly long trip if I were to have problems. Besides, I wouldn't have really saved anything to go down there. I probably would have actually ended up paying closer to 1500 for it if I were to go down there (food, lodging, fuel, and more shopping). It should be a crime for these places to charge so much, but they pretty much have you by the nads! I always tell people that are coming up here to get one installed before they get here....also make sure that someone will work on it up here if you have problems (i.e. directed electronics).

We came up from Ft Benning. Noone down there had even heard of one, which kinda surprised me. It was bad enough asking about the block heater. One place wanted $800 here, just for the unit. Install was another $150, plus another $100 for being a diesel. I had a few choice words. I was not about to spend more of our DITY money on the starter than the exhaust...lol

I'm leaning more toward a Webasto or Esbar heater with timer, remote option rather than a remote start. With the timer for instance, if you have to leave your truck at a parking lot or airport for extended period, just program the heater to fire 2 to 3 hours before arrival and your set. It's a little more than a remote start but is more efficient than firing the entire engine. You can also get it with the cab heat module and the inside is toasty.:D

Mrs Spoolin,
too bad you didn't stop at MaxPower's shop in Winnipeg on the way up! you could have cut that price in half! I've made the Ft.Benning - Winnipeg run several times, not bad at all and right on the way to AK (that's the way my old room mate used to get to Louisiana). Enjoy winter.

Coming up we went through Nevada to see my MIL, so we weren't near it. Hubby didn't think we'd need one, it took him about a week to change his mind.):h

I'm actually loving winter. It's above freezing today, which sucks since it will all freeze up at night. I couldn't believe how cold Michigan felt after being in the dry cold.

Yeah Webasto is an awesome product. As soon as you start it up it's at operating temp.
