: Swap Out Passenger Door Lights on Crew Cab?

Have any of you swapped out the rear door red "reflector" with the light/reflector combo used on the front doors?

Is there a way that this mod can be done using the existing wiring harness in the rear door?

It would appear it can be done pretty easy...The Burbs and Yukons have it.

Thanks for your help!

The newer trucks must not have them? My '02 has them...if the wiring was there i'm sure you could swap some in. Sorry I wasn't a lot of help:)

OK. so the older trucks had them, and the new yukons and burbs have them.

Has anyone confirmed the wiring is there? Or has anyone looked into this before?
Otherwise, I guess I'll tear in and see what I find.
Thanks.

Does anyone have a wiring schematic of the rear door? I see a lot of wires and not many functions. I think I may have the wiring to add the lights, but I wanna make sure I tap the right ones.
BTW - 2005 wiring.

Any help?
Thanks.

I would assume, I know what sometimes happens when I assume ):h , that there is a plug taped to the harness somewhere for the light i fhte Yukons have the lights. I know when my dad installed electric mirrors on his manual mirrored 02 D/A the electric socket for the switch was there. Don't know though.

My Dad just purchased an 05 and wants to do the same thing. Any updates? Also, anyone know part numbers?

None of the 05 Silverados have them. Just another way GM put a couple extra bucks in their pockets hoping the consumers wouldn't realize. I just pulled them out of my old door panels and installed them in the new panels to make sure they would fit last night. Won't be looking into the wiring until early next week. If no one else has responded with info by than I'll let you guys know. I'm hoping there's already a plug hidden somewhere, but I'm not holding my breath. If not I think there's a wire in there that will work.

sp33d that would be great :thumb:

Looking at his 05 compared to my 01... ...I think I'll stick with my 01.

We both have the LS interior and his seems cheaply made to me. I can't figure out why he has a tan headliner with the graphite seats and carpet.

Comparing my 05 interior to my 02 interior I don't see a difference in the quality. Both are LT so my results may vary. Most of the pieces attach very similar if not the same as my 02. My 02 had a tan headliner with a graphite interior...

Once the panels come off you really start to see where the corners are cut. For example, in models previous to 05 our window switches had 4 LEDs (one for each up/down switch). My 05 only has one and they've created a piece of plastic that reflects the light to each of the switches. It's obvious this was done to save money. Again, something 95% of people would never realize and probably isn't a big deal but while the prices of our trucks continue to rise the manufacturers continue to find ways to save money without us knowing/realizing it. BlueOx is actually the one that found this out and told me. I probably would have fallen into the group that never knew otherwise.

I've got one more night of work to get the last of the aftermarket stuff off my old truck that I plan to keep. After that, I'll be moving on to reassembling the new truck. It's sitting in the shop with no interior (dash, seats, carpet, console, headliner are all out of it right now). One of the first things I'm going to get done is the wiring of the rear passenger door marker lights.

Chad,
Any updates?

Should have an update tomorrow. Just waiting to get the lights back (sent them out for some "upgrades") to do some testing. They're supposed to be in the mail tomorrow.

Edit: I have found that there is not a plug there from previous models :( So to do this you will have to splice a couple wires which should be no big deal. I just want to make sure the ones I've spliced work before posting my results.

OK, my update on this is being pushed back a bit. The upgraded lights I sent out (from my front doors) came back a little different than I expected so I can't hook them up to the back doors for testing. I should have the upgraded rear door lights back in a week or two and I'll report then.

Thanks Sp33D. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I haven;t been able to tear into my back doors to test the wiring. I'll think I'll just sit back and see what you find.

I ended up being able to get this done this weekend after all so here it is.

The first picture is of the light and harness I conphiscated from my old truck. You'll need these to do the job. The harness from my old truck was a white and orange wire. Looking at the lights on the front doors of my new truck they are blue and black, but it doesn't matter. You have to figure out which is power and which is ground. In my case the white was ground and the orange was power. I only have about six inches of wire on each so I'll have to extend them when I finish the installation. Chances are you'll have to add wire no matter what as the two wires we need to use on the truck are further away then they were on the 02 I raided.

The light needs a constant power and a ground only when the door is open. In our case the blue with black striped wire in the harness at the bottom of the door is our ground. For a constant power source I went to the orange sicle colored wire in the window plug harness as shown in the third picture. The blue with black stripe wire is only grounded when the door is open so wired this way the lights will only activate if that door is open.

I realized this would only work after typing all this so I offer it incomplete. If you want these to work like they should (which I do) you'll have to find a wire that is grounded when any door is open, or the courtesy light is on. In this case I don't know that a wire like this exists in the rear doors. I'm waiting on my helms manual to get here so I probably won't find a good working wire until next weekend.

I've finally got an update. This isn't a simple upgrade as there is no wiring in the rear door that will make this function the way I want (when ANY door is open or the courtesy light is on the light we are wiring is on). My above post will ONLY activate the door courtesy light if it is opened. If you open any other door in the truck the rear two would not activate if you wire as I have above. If this doesn't matter go for the above as it's a simple way to get the lights and no one is going to notice them not being on unless the door is open - and they'll be on in this case.

I like having things done right so I had to courtesy light power from somewhere. Nothing in the rear door has this power. The harness plugged into the switch does nothing but control the windows. Believe it or not every one of the wires has to do with the windows only. The helms manual confirms this.

I ended up going to the front door courtesy light wire for my power. This means running a wire into the front door and tapping into the right wire. Than take that wire and get it into the back door. The front door is easy. The rear doors are a PITA since the door jamb loombs are connectors rather than open holes. You could drill a hole through the connector in the upper corner as there are no pins there. I ended up using one of the speaker wires since I've removed the stock speakers and they wires are no longer doing a thing. Tapped into it under the front door sill and than tapped into the wire at the speaker connection. Connected that wire to the orange wire on my harness. Connected the white wire on the harness to a ground in the door (black wire in the bottom wiring).

The wire you need to tap into in the front passenger door is the white one coming from the lever connector in the door switch. It's the blue with white stripe in the driver's door. These wires go to the two pin connectors that attach to the courtesy lights too.

Works perfectly. Not the easiest project but a couple hours and it can be done. Good luck.
