SSNightmare,

I believe the Napa Gold series of filters are made by Wix.

I agree pretty much with MaxPower above. I'll stick with the OEM filters while the vehicle is in warranty. Might help prevent any sticky problems if the whole thing blows up. Probably trade it in before the time/mileage warranty runs out. Just don't want any litigation between now and then.

Mobil M1-303.

It's actually cheaper than the AC Delco at Autozone.

Information on the Proper Air Filter for the Duramax Diesel #05-00-90-001 - (Jan 5, 2005)

Information on the Proper Air Filter for the Duramax® Diesel

2001-2005 Chevrolet Silverado

2001-2005 GMC Sierra

with 6.6L Duramax® Diesel Engine (VINs 1, 2 - RPOs LB7, LLY)

The Duramax® air filter, P/N 25332443, is specific to the diesel engine due to the operating characteristics of a turbo charged diesel engine. The turbo allows for a much greater air volume rate than a normal aspirated engine. The Duramax® diesel air filter is reinforced to eliminate damage from the increased airflow of the turbo. The reinforcement is visually identified by the five ribs of epoxy that lies across the pleats of the clean side of the filter.

If the correct air filter is not used, the filter may collapse or be torn in a Duramax® application. This damage will allow dust and dirt to be ingested into the turbo and engine causing serious damage. This damage is usually identified at the turbo vanes as well as extreme wear in the cylinder walls of the engine.

There is evidence of gasoline engine air filters being used in the Duaramax® application. The 8.1 gas air filter, P/N 25313349, will fit into the air box of the Duramax® diesel; however, it does not have the required reinforcement of the diesel air filter. The 8.1 liter gas engine air filter should never be used in a Duramax® diesel engine.

WHEN i bought my truck the air filter was sucked into the airbox or collapsed, the previous owner installed the wrong one...but nothing passed by the seal...thank goodness....:o

Another vote for the Mobil M1-303. In my area they are the same price as the Wix filter and the Mobil is a high efficiency filter that filters down to a finer level than conventional oil filters. I have a new M1-303 sitting in front of me and on the box Mobil claims 98% particle removal at 10 to 20 microns.

Second choice for me is Wix and AC Delco.

Ben,

I also get the M1-303 at Autozone. You might be able to purchase them from Autozone's web site.

SSNightmare,
There you have it. When you are done reading this thread, you will have virtually no idea what filter to run so you will run what you have.....I just stick with what has worked for me for years. Wix is Dana and Dana has made filters for the heavy equipment and truck industry for years.

Again, going the other way, Stay away from Fram, and those real cheap made filters. Maybe that's the question we should ask on the site, Not what is the best but rather which filters we should NOT use....):h

Baldwin, with Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 year round, changed every 6000 miles.

SSNightmare,

To answer your question, the general feeling here is that:

AC Delco - good high quality filter,

Baldwin, WIX, Champion, (and their branded counter parts) - All good high quality filters.

Fram and some no name brands - Not so good, stay away or use at your own risk.

Champion makes the Mobil 1 filters that everyone is talking about.

I use Baldwin B1441 filters and they are also highly rated.

If you do some research over at the BITOG web site forum, you can get a real good idea about the filter construction and make-up. Those guys will talk your ear off about oil and filters. That is how I made my decision to go with Baldwin.

I've been using the black OEM filter from Isuzu. That's what my dealer stocks. As Max Power said, If GM designed it then that's what I ought to use. I feel the same way about my other motors. Use the AC Delco on my Tahoe and other pickup. I use a John Deere filter on my John Deere garden tractor and I use Honda filters on my Honda motorcycles and ATV's.
