Ok, I have a 96 6.5 "F" TD. About a year ago I put an alarm system / Autostart into the truck, but I never finished hooking up the autostart. I tried to hook it up, but they only tach type output I could find, was the Crank position sensor at the computer, and I didn't figure that would work very well. Well, now I am moving to Alaska and the autostart would be a very good thing. So, Last night I hooked it up, and here is the problem. I hooked the autostart tach sense to the white wire coming off the Alternator. I tested this line with a Scope and it shows varying freq with RPM. The Autostart calibrated to this right away and works beautifully, but then my check engine light came on. This morning, when I drove to work, the truck would not shift right. I don't think it is shifting out of 2nd to 3rd. I have pulled the instrument cluster out, and there isn't any obvious places that I can hook to there for a tach sense. Can someone tell me what is going on, or where I should be hooking this up, so that I don't cause the computer problems? Thanks
Jeremy

The problem is you have need to add a relay to power up the WHITE igntion wire when the remote start is running. You can not join this up with another igntion wire you need to isolate it with another external relay. This will definately solve your check engine light and shifting problems.
If you start the truck with the remote starter you will see the PRNDL indicator will not be lit up. After you hook up the relay it will be lit up. I have seen this MANY times and you can be sure that this will solve your problems.

Max is right about the second "white" igintion wire. On some models there is no white igintion wire. If you don't have the white look for the pink with the white strip. Some models have two iginition and some have three.

It was the Pink with white stripe. Thank you very much. This will make life a lot better for driving from Seattle to Anchorage. Thanks again.

R8io,
How does the auto start handle the glow plug cycle (wait to start light)? I've got one in my wife's suburban (gas) and it's worth every penny, but was hesitant to get one for my truck, because I wasn't sure how it would handle the glow plugs. You will probably still want to have a block heater plugged in at night though.

Most good remote starters have a wire to monitor the wait to start circuit. When the light goes off, the truck starts.

You can grab both tach and wait to start wire of the ecm located behind the glove box.
