Hello Guys, My first time posting on this site because fortuanately I've never had troubles with my truck. I was directed to this site from diesel gearheads.):h
It started with the fuel gauge jumping from empty to full only when the tank is full. Then upon starting it would puff blue smoke and continue for about 1-3 miles. Never smoked sinced I owned it. Also its very rough sounding and upon hard acceleration it wants to stall. It's a 2002 2500hd crewcab longbox Duramax Diesel. I hope some of you have expierienced this problem so I can go to the dealer with all my ducks in a row. Thanks:)

I'd do some searching on this site. I think all of your troubles have been talked about.

Welcome!!!!

I to experienced the fuel guage acting up only when full. It did it twice then not again. I called and asked the stealer what they thought it was and they thought is was the fuel sending unit. IIRC it might be located in the fuel tank.

How often do you change your fuel filter? Are you the original owner? Prior records if not?

I am the oringinal owner and I have never changed the fuel filter. Today it didn't smoke at all, just upon accerleration it would stutter and not take off. It's like it lost all power in the passing gear. Is this fuel filter change something you can do in the driveway?

You can change it in the driveway, the owners manual tells you how. Its pretty easy, the only problem I had was that I had to make a special filter wrech. I think you can buy one thats made to fit the filter, not sure where since I made my own. Also, I take the battery out, it makes it a heck of alot easier to get to the filter. Other than that just follow the owners manual.

That's where I would start

How many miles on your truck?
If it's more than 15,000 the filter should be changed, and sooner if the fuel in your area is crappy
I think there's a article how to change it in the DIY section.
Get one of the NEW fuel filter's just out if you can, their about $30.00. Stealer will charge about $80.00 to change it.
Easiest way is to take off the plastic inner fender and the fuel filter will be right there in easy reach and sight.
Fuel guage could be a sending unit or a bad instrument cluster.
Good luck and if you have any more specific's, list them

I would change the filter and begin using some Stanadyne performance formula to clean up the fuel system. You should use it all the time to clear it up.

When I had these symptoms, forgot to put in some Stanadyne, poored some in the tank and cleared the problem up. Then changed the fuel filter. Problem never returned and I never forgot to add my Stanadyne.

I run 15k on my fuel filters and with all the storms that went through FL, that is when I needed the Stanadyne the most. Bad fuel was everywhere.

I would not waste my money on an intake system. From what I have read, the stock air box and filter setup does as good a job as any. JMO.

Air leak! Did you replace all the o rings with the filter?

MaxFarmer

Exactly what I was getting at..... Did you put anything on the O rings to help them seal before installing as well? That's where I would start though, looking for an air leak with the filer.

Yeah, its kind of nice to see that GM realized they had a problem and extended the warranty on all 01 and 02 duramaxes. I'm pretty sure 03's will be added sometime as well...
