: Spray-on Bug/Rock deflector (Pix)
OK, let's face facts:
Bug deflectors DON'T deflect bugs... or at least not that much. At best, they raise the line on your windshield a few inches. ):h
They don't "HELP" aerodynamcis any. If they did, NASCAR :ro) wouldn't use the same principle on the rear deck of a race car.
They collect the snow from your hood in the winter.
They reach out (I swear, up to 3 ft away) and grab the spray hose while you are at the car wash or your jacket when you walk by. This normally results in a torn jacket, broken bug deflector or both.
What they do VERY WELL, is protect the front of the hood from rock chips.:)
With this in mind, I followed the example of a local guy (he works/ownes a SuperLiner bed liner shop) and sprayed on a "bug deflector" on my hood.

Head-On shot... looks almost like a normal bug deflector.

Here is a picture of it from the side... note the slight texture.

Here you can see the texture close-up and you can see how thin the liner is sprayed on. The "painter" did a really good job of taping and making a nice edge.

And here is a shot of the corner and the fender.
I was very pleased with the results and was wondering what others thought. If you have any questions, let me know.
_nar_ 01-16-2005, 09:21 PM Well that looks really good. I know several guys that did the whole bottom 1/3 of the truck, made it 2 tone, when they had the bed done. Looks like it would save on rock chips pretty well. The hood would be the finishing touch.
catch007 01-16-2005, 09:25 PM Almost looks factory. Adds balance to the other black front end trim. Should give you good chip protection. It would be trick if you could get coating in the truck color.
tophog 01-16-2005, 09:41 PM I feel real sorry for those nice little bugs now :) Seriously, looks good.
Pewter over Black is an awesome look. :ro) The guy who did mine has done just that, sprayed the black SuperLiner on the bottom of his truck. The biggest downside is cost. He said is would cost the same to spray liner as to do a professional paint job. It's something to consider... when my wallet gets re-filled. By the way, cost was $100.
motovet 01-16-2005, 10:34 PM Similar to what I had done to my tailgate with Line-X. Looks good.....maybe I should have a matching front.
GMC Lover 01-17-2005, 09:38 AM Motovet, line-x job looks great. I have it in my 02 truck and want to do my 05 also. In my 02 I left the factory plastic cap on the tailgate, now it is beat up. When you removed the tailgate cap were there any holes in tailgate. If so how did you cover them up. Any help would be great. Thanks
HD-Nate 01-17-2005, 11:01 AM Well OK, glad you like it.
I’m just trying to figure out the logic here. To avoid getting a few tiny rock nicks on the hood of your beautiful truck, you spray a large, rough looking black coating over the paint? Love that color by the way!
I’ll take the nicks, touch them up when needed.
I will agree that the bug shields aint what they use to be and never really did a good job of deflecting bugs. But, did do a good job of protecting the front of the hood.
Not trying to be a smart azz here but you did ask what we thought.
olskool53 01-17-2005, 11:09 AM I had line-x spray the top of my utility box on my 05. Best thing I ever done now I can put tools and parts up there and not worry about the paint!

Yes there is holes under the plastic cap. They covered the holes with something then sprayed.....can't see where the holes were, so whatever was done worked well. I did the same to my previous truck as I can't stand how that cap looks after a while.
Duramax Dually 01-17-2005, 02:13 PM May I say, I installed the Invinca Shield ( 3M 10 mil thick clear) nearly 3 years ago. It has performed far beyond my expectation. I have to say this has been the best product for bug and chip protection without compromising the front look of the truck. You still retain the color since it is transparent. You can see a very small parting line when the sun hits it just right but other than that it looks fantastic. I installed it on my fenders of my Dually and it too is in excellent shape and has protected the rear dually fenders from chips and dings.
I like the line-X coated front you had done, but that may not work with all colors. They did a nice job. Regardless it sure beats having those smoked plastic products hanging on the front.
ShumDit 01-17-2005, 11:32 PM Me be happy w/the Invinca Shield. Is there any reason Linex can't be transparent?
Duramax Dually 01-17-2005, 11:46 PM Do not know, I suspect part of the catalyst for hardening the line X type material is dark. Now color matching might be nice. I suspect that it is a pigment issue and read that the colored liners do not hold up well over time. Also a smoother texture would be a nice touch. Not to fond of the rough look.
cdn111 01-17-2005, 11:46 PM that does look slick. I just wonder what they "covered" the holes with. Did they weld in a filler plate or what? I love the bug deflector sprayed on as well. looks very nice and a little different.
I've got LineX on my front bumper. The best part is the bugs wash off, zero scrubbing.
TruckDaddy 01-18-2005, 12:31 PM Superliner, Speedliner, Herculiner, Duplicolor, and Durabak are "solvent based" also called "one-part" polyurethanes. That is, the polyurethane is suspended in a solvent. A catalyst is added which polymerizes the sovent and leaves just the polyurethane.
LINE-X is a "two-part" polyurethane (and polyurea). That is, a polyol resin is mixed with isocyanate (a hardener) which renders the polyurethane/polyurea.
Two part polys, like LINE-X, are typically harder and much more durable than one-part polys.
TruckDaddy 01-18-2005, 06:06 PM Just for fun, here's a Jeep Cherokee, the entire exterior in red or black LINE-X.

olskool53 01-18-2005, 08:18 PM Thats Cool!!
motovet 01-19-2005, 12:29 AM Guess the clay bar won't be needed.....
DEWFPO 01-19-2005, 07:55 PM That's beautiful work, did they scuff up the paint on that hood job before they sprayed it?
DEWFPO
DEWFPO,
Yep, they prep it just like paint. It's permanent. Definitely not something to "rush" into.

DEWFPO
Yes we did, here's a pic, it's partially prepped. Note that we have removed the fender flares and bumpers.
