I bought a 1000 watt inverter a few months back and when I finally went to install it, was surprised to find that even with 4-ga wire, I couldn't place it further than 5' from my power source (according to included instructions).
since the ideal location is somewhere in the back of my crew cab, i'd probaby be at 8-10' minimum.
for those of you who've installed an inverter, any tips?

Bigger wire :D
I know for car audio stuff they sell 2awg, 1/0, and I've even seen 2/0awg power cable. So it's out there if you need it.

you should look into the 1/0 gauge wire, don't skimp on it, diferent wire makers will carry a diferent load in it.

There may be cheaper places to get wire but this place (http://www.cardomain.com/shoptype/Power+Wires) should have what you need if nothing else.

You might try welding leads. They have great ability to disperse the heat and can carry high amps for the size of wire.

I agree welding leads are an excellent high amp cable. 1/0 is capable of carrying 400 amps more than 100 feet. Also they are made up of very small strands which allow for high flexibility. I have seen recently cable that has a neoprene type covering that will withstand exposure better than standard weld cable. I use weld cable on my race car for the starter etc. but after one season of exposure to the exhaust manifold the rubber insulation was begining to crack. But that was with the cable routing less than an inch from the manifold. (been corrected now) Check with any weld supply house they should have it or be able to order. You can also buy heavy duty connectors from weld stores.
