: Pulling hay
duramaxin14 02-14-2008, 07:36 PM We where going to try it today on another guys 6.5 but figured i would get some of yall 0.2 on the subject. I pull hay with my 04 duramax the truck trailer and everything loaded down brings in roughtly 30 - 36,000 pound depending on the size of the bale. We are very busy right now moveing alot of hay. My brother dont no it yet but when his truck gets fixed and if it can handle it i will have him out in the hay field helping out. Can his truck handle the weight if I put bags on it for him. I aint going to say anything to him yet until i found out for sure that it can or cant. And if not how much weight can this beast move on a trailer with it not breaking down and still being reliable. Thanks guys
packratt 02-14-2008, 07:55 PM How many bales are you moving at one time to be hitting those weights?
I routinely haul hay with my K3500 but I'm limited by not having a front end loader on the tractor where I load it. I can only get 4-5 bales on my trailer at one time with the setup I've got to use. If I had a loader to load with I don't think I'd have any problem with 11-15.
If I remember correctly yours is a K1500 so your weight limits will be lower. Turbinedoc hauls some large weights with his do some searching.
You will definately want to do the dual thermostat conversion, clean the bugs and trash out of the radiator, larger exhaust and downpipe etc. Check the FAQ.
DieselPro 02-14-2008, 08:22 PM I'd be worried about the transmission.
duramaxin14 02-14-2008, 08:32 PM Sorry guys i should of specifyed. We have a 36 foot gooseneck we usally hall 20 round bails that weight about 1,000 +/- a peace. when we are really busy like now we double stack the top to fit 27 bales total with 1 on the tounge of the trailer. We have a 7410 with a hydralic lift to load the trailers down.
Is that a short haul, seems your putting some stress on her 27000+3000 for trailer. Pushing it hard hope it stops
Turbine Doc 02-14-2008, 08:58 PM how far, how fast, and are there any grades to contend with, stock 6.5 especially a "S" K-1500 isn't up to that kind of load, neither is stock Dmax for that matter but folks do it does your trailer have brakes on it that are working?
Mine before mods struggled with my 5600# gn trailer by itself, I'd discourage you hauling until you put some more work into it, in addition to mods in sig, I redid my trans with hd clutches, new tq converter, towing shift kit you will need to do the same.
dirtfarmer629 02-14-2008, 09:03 PM I dont think a K 1500 would handle it maybe a K 2500 on short trips. I have pulled around 25000 pounds with my truck before but just pulling wagons from hay field to hay field. My dads 99 we pull around 20000 pounds of trailer and cattle to the market and it seems to handle it good just cant get to fast. I have pulled the cattle trailer with my truck before but it gets hot doing it.
Turbine Doc 02-14-2008, 09:06 PM stock K1500 won't, or won't for long, mine took a lot of work to make mine capable of the work
duramaxin14 02-14-2008, 09:26 PM The only time we are pulling from field to field is when we are pulling plant grass. There are a couple grades around florida but nothing to serise. How much weight can his truck hall does anyone no. And yes all my trailers have trailer brakes that fuction
Turbine Doc 02-14-2008, 09:36 PM I wouldn't hazzard to guess as a 94 your truck is a little long in tooth to try too much without making some serious instpections of bottom end, upgrades, how fresh are IP & injectors how many miles on the truck/engine, 6.5s die and get undeserved bad rep. from trying to make em do more than they are ready for

So it would proplery be better to leave it for light duty then correct. Will it be able to pull my duramax to the sled pulls. When we have a pull 100 miles + from the house??
Turbine Doc 02-14-2008, 10:11 PM will manage a rolling load with some mods & detailed health assesment 1st to make sure she is healthy 1st
Torque454 02-15-2008, 01:14 AM 1/2 tons gonna have 3.42 gears which sucks for pulling. I don't think id pull more than 10-12 bales or so but make sure you've got a good trans cooler. Better get a 4" exhaust, and EGT/trans temp gauges. Might as well do the boost gauge too while you're at it. Trans temp is critical, but you should be fine as long as you've got a cooler. Its the same transmission used in the one tons, its just the one ton for sure will have a good cooler. You are basically limited in brakes, gearing, and frame. Keep the weight off the truck and onto the trailer wheels, (do need SOME weight on the truck just not too much) and make sure your trailer brakes are set pretty strong (if you don't almost lock up the wheels then you probably don't have them set high enough) and use a good controller. I strongly strongly recommend a tekonsha prodigy. Its got to be the best controller on the market. If you plan to use it alot, you might consider a 3.73 or 4.10 gear. I think it would do fine. I'd do it... buy not 30,000 pounds worth. The 4l80e transmission is very strong....but i dont think its quite that strong. Id keep it under 20k GCW.
Turbine Doc 02-15-2008, 07:28 AM my K1500 came with 3:73, burbs/hoes for most part got the 3:42 but that is something else that needs checking, DMAX14 check your RPO list in glove box vs RPO list in FAQ to know what type of equipment your truck came with. Alos my K1500 came with trans cooler, but I added an extra one under bed with a thermostat controlled fan rated to 25K, again they can do a lot more when prepared for it properly.

See this post. Our area is basically flat.
bigcountry343 02-15-2008, 10:16 PM I have pulled 18 1/2 ton bales without much trouble but brakes are not up for the task for much more even with trailor brakes
