Yesterday I went to my local Bowtie stealership to purchase a replacement AC Delco air filter element for $41  . While driving out of their parking lot, I counted at least 5 brand new 2005 D/A equipped Silverados with 6” lift kits installed. I was curious to know how the lift kits would alter the factory warranty. When I parked my truck to get more information, I was immediately greeted by 2 salesmen  . The trucks all had supplemental window stickers indicating they were fitted with after market wheels, tires and the 6” lift.

When I asked about the basic warranty on those trucks, they told me 3/36. I asked them if the lift kit or the larger tires void any of the GM factory warranty. Their response was “No”.

Does anyone know if GM changed their warranty regarding tire or suspension modifications????

alot of time the dealers will intall the lift with tires and wheels and sell them, and in those cases they are definitely covered under the warranty as the dealer did them and as long as they are gauranteeing the warranty, which they do. now aftermarket, as in drive off lot and have a lift done is different but it hasnt been a problem for me at all

Prior To Installing Lift I Contacted My Dealer Too See What They Said. I Was Told That As Long As I Wasnt Replacing Tie Rods/ball Joints Etc Etc Every Month That There Would Not Be A Problem. Before I Got My Company Truck There Were Dealers Along The Way...to & From Work... That Had Installed Lifts On Trucks That Were Sittin On The Lot Waitin To Be Sold, So I Wasnt Worried About That Either....as Long As I Broke Down Close To One Of Them I Figured Id Be Ok

GM will not warranty any failure of or failure caused by aftermarket equipment. If there is a failure of or caused by the lift or wheels then the installing/selling dealer will warranty it at their discretion, but that warranty is no good at any other dealer.

Your Probably Right With Dealers Out Of Town, hope I Never Have Need To Find Out. I Went Straight To Service Manager And Asked What He Could Or Would Do For Me If Need Arrised. Told Him That If It Was To Bee A Prob That I Would Leaev It Stock...was Reassured It Was To Be No Problemo.

Thats what I thought too, but if the lift kit, tires and wheels are listed on the sales paperwork as dealer installed optional equipment, it will be tough for GM to deny warranty claims. The dealer is the authorized representative for GM at the time of sale.

....Well let me convey my experience with dealer installed aftermarket equipment. My previous truck, a 2000 GMC K2500 Sierra reg-cab of which I purchased brand new off the lot. Prior to putting this truck on the lot the dealer installed nerf bars, bed and tailgate protectors, bush bars and alloy centreline mag wheels with the stock General tires mounted on them. Now being an interested customer I took this truck for a test drive and decided it was exactly what I needed. So they got it ready for me and off I went. A close friend of mine (mechanic) advised me that I should return the truck to the dealership and have them reinstall the stock steel wheels as the alloys would be nothing but trouble. I wished I had listened. Now this truck had a GVWR of 8600# so it was a good solid truck. I have a slide-in truck camper that weighs in at 2500lbs fully loaded on the truck and it was about 8300# total truck and camper weight which was well within GVW limits. In May '03 we decided to take a trip across Canada and upon arriving in Ontario I found I had a wheel stud sheared off of the left rear hub assy. I took it to a local GM dealer to have the stud replaced and have the rest checked on both sides since we were a long way from home. I took it there because there was still 2 months left on the manufacturer's 3 year/60,000klm warranty. After the job was complete I was informed that because aftermarket wheels were installed in place of the stock wheels that the warranty on the hubs was null & void and it was the alloy wheels that caused the studs to shear and not a material defect. So I promptly phoned the dealership at home (3000 miles away) and asked them what the heck was going on with this situation. After tap dancing a bit they told me to pay the bill ($350.00) and keep the old parts and reciepts and I'd be re-embersed upon my arrival home and thankfully they were true to their word. Luckily the bill wasn't any more expensive or it would have certainly ruined our vacation. I learned a valuable lesson through this experience and I would never have dealer installed aftermarket components on a truck again. So watchout how they dress things up to catch your eye and ask how any of this aftermarket equipment effects your warranty at the manufacturers level, not just the dealers. It's great if they tell you it won't affect the wrty as long as your break down is in their local area but if you need warranty work done at another dealership you may be in for an expensive surprise. Good luck..............SWH...
