Picked up my 05 Friday and righ away noticed no more lighted vanity mirrors either on passenger or driver side. Driver side no mirror at all. This LT my 01 had lighted mirrors on both sides. Must be GM saving more money.

Don't forget no glovebox light, no under dash light, no under hood light, no tinted windshield, yada, yada, yada........

However, I will gladly give all these things up for something the new one DOES have, dual climate control. Ends my wife and I fighting over temp all the time....! Love the new one.!

I am happy to say that I am more than happy with my 2004.5 . . . and there are more pluses that override the negatives on my truck, which makes me a happy and content customer, buyer/owner.

My old '01 LT did not have lighted vanity mirrors but a 95 S-10 I had did. I think there is too much in electronic gadgetry on the new ones but some of the creature comforts and conveniences are eliminated. Still don't know why you can't get a LT with 40-60 or 40-20-40 front seats instead of that worthless piece of plastic between buckets.

I was also disappointed finding out the features which were left out. (sunshade, vanity mirrors with lights, no heated rear seats) I have an 02 Escalade with all of this and more. I really wish the trucks had the Escalade's center console, it's much more useable. Almost forgot, I really hate not having a manual "tripometer" button at the guages like my Escalde has (it is still digitally lit). It takes way to long to go through the DIC quickly to the "personal section", reset it and go back to mpg etc. I just want something I can set quickly if I'm checking mileage from point a to b. So much for cell phones causing wrecks, this DIC takes longer to search through than the Escalades and all of the above are all from GM.

Melvin - the following post isn't directed at you - just a generalized feeling that your post caused me to realize.

Problem is that if you want to buy American :ro), and buy a truck that has MOST of the stuff you want, this is what we're stuck with. I still think it's a sad comprimise since, with upgrades, I've probably got $70K into this stupid truck ($45K *stock*), so I expect GM to make these options available to those of us willing to pay for them and stop nickle and diming us just because they have to maintain their 0% APR programs forever. I don't want to have to buy a Hummer or Escalade (for my freak parade) which may have more options, even though I could afford one - I want a TRUCK, but I want it with all the goodies. If they'd simply give us the *option* to (pay extra) for a few of these "vanity" items, I am certain that there are many of us who would. I ordered every conceivable option on my truck and STILL get no Censored dash lights or underhood lights and have to go out and patchwork a solution together?!?

Sure there are those who still say "it's a truck dummy - it shouldn't be comfortable, she just needs to get er dun". Yeah, and those are the same guys that are still telling us how far they walked to school in the snow too. ;)

I think if GM were smart, they'd make the custom order process a LOT easier and a lot more flexible. That'd allow them to differentiate themselves, probably earn better customer loyalty, and probably help them reduce unecessary stock since everything would be BTO (build to order). Allow me to simply place my danged order via the Internet and not ever deal with a 19 year-old sales "assistant" who's under-trained, underpaid, under-motivated, and under-educated, and frankly makes the process more comlicated than it needs to be.

Many industries are going custom BTO that have traditionally been based on a mass-production model and the automotive industry should be no exception. I "custom" ordered my truck, waited 10 weeks, and it was as smooth as the process can be today - but the process was still a joke. I spent months researching my truck and options and walked into the dealer prepared. I was more familiar with the options than they were. And even though the dealership is <5 years old, they still weren't automated enough to take my order codes/options, enter them in the computer and get me out the door quickly. They had to write them down, and then they told me only ONE guy in the entire dealship had mastered the Ninja-like ancient artform of entering these orders, so the rest of these sales jokers were helpless, and my order couldn't be completed for several days. Then of course after the master Ninja entered my order, he made some oversights (because the process is still semi-manual) that created additional work for both the dealer and me once the truck arrived (options overlooked/not entered).

It's that kind of back-*sswards, antiquated approach to business that kills companies and I sure as heck hope that GM figures it out quick. Toyota and Nissan seem to be aggressively pursuing the full size market and I want to keep buying American till the day I buy my last truck, but Detroit needs to get their heads out of their tails and wake up to new business models and new technologies that will allow them to be more efficient and sell more product, while giving them higher margins.

Not to mention that the Chevy design guys ought to take a clue from the GM design guys...but let's not go there. ;)

 RANT MODE = OFF

Thank you...drive through. :D

Perhaps we could start one of those mass email campains and send it to GM...often.

What do you all think?

I am guessing that your ride is 2wd, if it is, that compartment is what they gave you since you don't have a transfer case selector. If it is 4wd, I am confused and I need another look at mine. GM likes to give you compartments when certain options are deleted.

It probably won't matter... it would take "not sending" them something (our money) to get their attention. I was kinda irked to see that they took out the manual lumbar support on the mid trim (LS, SLE) trucks. My back was out for a week after I traded my 02 for my 05.
Maybe when the HD Tundra comes out, competition will force GM to add some of the content back.

I heard in 2006 the steering wheel and windshield are going to be considered optional components and only available via special order If you don't opt for the windshield a complimentery pair of GM goggles will be provided :) Pretty soon trucks will be sold in a little cardboard box that says "just add water".

nope it's a 4WD. it's got the shifter on the floor, not the electric push button kind.

my guess is that it's where the electric push button 4WD would be if i had it, and they just gave me a little compartment instead. but did they have to make it so it tilted towards me? i would prefer tilting away, would be happy with it being level, but tilting towards me? come on!

I heard you'll only get that message if you have the optional BIC (Box Information Center) ):h

One thing I hate about my new truck is the turn sig lever for dimming the lights. No click 'high', click 'low' beam anymore, now it's like the Jap cars where it toggles toward dash for 'high beam', toggle toward the steering wheel 'low beam' that's stupid. And they moved it up on the steering column a little - took me a month to get used to where the turn sig lever was at.

I bet GM will bring back all of the missing lights and features as an optional ($) package in the near future. Other manufacturers have done this many times. Many GM customers will complain about missing features and GM will respond by creating an equipment option.

CalDirt, excellent post. Can't agree more, though I did luck out a bit with my dealer. However, there was only ONE Ninja there too!! Hell, even GM www sites are not correct when you go to "Build your GMC/Chevy" section. As you enter the various option check boxes, the page refreshes, and some options go bu-bye, and others come back. Two examples are the Camper Sytle mirrors and the sunroof option, and maybe even the DVD.

I'm PO'd that they eliminated the option to tie keyfob 1 and 2 to the mirrors (well not possible with the camper ones) HVAC and radio presets. At least give me a DIC option...

And where is the side airbags like my Denali has? And the two-tone leather? And the Denali center console, the front/back cup arrangement sucks? And adjustable headrests?

Don't get me wrong, I love the truck so far, its just that after you spend that much, you'd expect it to be loaded, not picked over, especially when the parts are in the bin.

How can they keep on thinking "OK we saved a couple of pennys on that one" just to "lose dollars in customer satisfaction"!

Don't get me wrong the pluses of this truck far outweigh the minus. However it would be nice to have a underhood light above the fuel filter in case of a nite road side change. Lighted vanity mirror for passenger (read significant other who went along with purchase) should be standard. Like someone said, after the price sticker these items are pocket change, options please GM.

Maybe when I'm ready for a new one around 2010 GM will be listening to customers again. I can't believe customers are calling the General and saying "No go ahead remove that stuff we don't need any of those conveniences".

The thing I miss most from my 04 to my 05 is the instant economy on the DIC. If my 04 wasn't a lemon I would'nt be in this new one. GM did step up to the plate on the lemon thing though.

I really don't have a need to check makeup, during the day or at night. If we are going out my wife sure as heck doesn't want to climb into/out of the truck.

The lack of bulb in the glovebox keeps you from pulling it when the latch breaks and the door is always open. Actually the map light works fine.

As far as leather, matching key fobs to mirror/seat/radio settings, side airbags- the Cadillac dealer was probably right around the corner...

end rant.

hey, that thing about the makeup light reminds me - you guys ever see that cops episode where the guy is running (in a truck) because he's embarassed of getting caught wearing ladies clothes? yeah bawby! nasty - but I'll bet he needed that makeup light.
