do you sand them down? do you spray or brushed on the paint and what color or kind of paint. Tell us how you do it. I'm tire of looking at mine, need to do something.

I know that it is unsafe, but here is how I did mine on my old truck.

chock the front wheels
put rear axle on jackstands
put truck in drive
wire brush driveshaft
stop, park
Wipe drive shaft clean
Put in drive
spray with rustoleum
Let dry
Let down and drive.

You will have no problem with painting the drive-shaft all class eight's do it, sand it wash it with asitone to get the wax off, then paint it. Jack up the back end and rotate the tire with your foot, to rotate your drive shaft. No runs allowed. Mask it off and you can paint it like a barber pole. PLAY SAFE!

I once say a huge lifted dodge gaser with a red and white spiral painted driveshaft to match the truck. It was really cool at slow speeds, but would only be seen on the largest lifted trucks.

Try searching for a product called POR-15. Made to paint over rusty items. The stuff really sticks and would be great for driveshafts in my opinion.

PS: My driveshaft is a large diameter aluminum type. Why do I have this, not a rusty steel version.

I'd take off the rear tires.... otherwise no way in hell I go under there. I'm not scared of dying, I just don't want to be held alive by a framerail across the abdomen until someone finds me.

Ehhh.... what could you tell to a 20 year old when they get bored. Also, my old truck sat high enough that I could slide a 5 gallon bucket under the oilpan and have room to spare :)

I probably would find a different way now that I am older and have seen more. At the time it seemed logical and easy, so I went for it.

As someone else said, you could follow the same procedure, but have someone rotate the tire for you

I crawled under and hit it with a krylon flat black spray bomb , good enough. Still black.

same here...it's just a driveshaft for cryin out loud.
Now if I had the aluminum one I would put it in gear, buff it, and then clearcoat....but I don't have that.

The crew cabs and long beds have alum. drive shafts.

Yeah, wish mine was aluminum, I might not be having the problems I'm having - my '06 crewcab longbox is steel also.

What I found that works the best from working on medal is to take a can of WD-40 and a steel wool pad to it. Spray the drive shaft down where ur working and just use the good old elbow grease. Work your way through the entire drive shaft until satisfied. Once complete wipe off all the excess WD and then clean with a solvent to remove the WD-40. Once dried use ur trusty old spray can go to town! :)

I had a 2wd 1995 Chevy that had the aluminum driveshaft and a 4wd 1995 GMC that had the steel driveshaft. Just a guess, but maybe they use aluminum on the 2wd, though I don't know why they'd bother making the lighter truck even lighter.

GM does sort of the same thing, though opposite, on the SUV's. Aluminum blocks in 1/2 ton 4wd SUV's and cast iron blocks in 1/2 ton 2wd SUV's. This makes more sense, to even out the weight.

I have access to a lift, so I jacked it up and used a drill to wire-wheel the whole thing. Once that was done I sprayed it with black rustoleum. That was over a year ago and still no rust!

Use something like POR-15 and you don't have to treat the rust at all. Just paint away!
