I think most members here say 'yes' for a gassr, but 'no' to diesel. Do a search on it, grab a couple off beers, and be ready for lots of reading. Basically the oiled filter messes up the MAF sensor. But there is alot more info here than that.

I use them, or have, in all 5 of my trucks. I only do it to save the expense of replacing the paper ones 1 a month. I use the spray on oil and have had no problems. I don't over oil. Almost 500,000 miles on 3 K & N's on 5 trucks!

If you do a search on here.. there was a very extensive test done on air filters... the results show that AC Delco is your best bet... bar none!!

That is right, AC Delco did test the best. But the test does show that everyone else wasn't too far behind. I would say that it would be on a personal choice and usage. I never had a problem with mine, but I have driven 60k already and the cost savings are what I was after. 60k + a year on the highway, it could add up in savings. I took delivery of my LLY on 3/28/04 with only 12 miles on it.

Personally used K&N in every car/truck I have ever owned and now my Duramax. No issues yet. When I recharged it I put the stock filter back in for a day and let the K&N oil sit over night so it goes into the filter where it should be and not get sucked in or stick on the MAF sensor. No problems as of yet, approaching 6k miles.

I used K&Ns on all my vehicles for well over a decade. My previous truck was the 8.1 liter gas 2500HD. I installed a new K&N when the truck was a week old. (Yes, I did install the gasket that K&N provides with the air filter.) I tightened all the hose clamps after the install. At 15,000 miles I decided to look at the air filter to see how dirty it was. The air filter did not look too bad but the MAF sensor was BLACK! I touched it and my finger made a silver spot on the screen. I removed the sensor from the truck and sprayed the MAF sensor with a cleaner that is approved for such uses. After my first spray MUD (wet sand) flowed out the other side of the intake tube that the MAF sensor was mounted inside of. It took a half can of cleaner until clear liquid ran out of the other side of the intake tube.
This is my experience with the K&N. I do not wish to start any arguments about the merits of the K&N. My message is simple and you can take it for what it is worth: Use the K&N at your own risk!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/Throwup.gif

FWIW.... Cummins no longer honours any engine related failure if a K&N Filter is used.

I am going to check my sensor just to be sure since if the sensor is clogged that could affect mileage.
thanks for the info

I have an Avalanche, 2002 with the 8.1 big block. Put a K&N on it and at 15K got the check engine light. The dealer said not to use K&N as they mess up the MAS sensor. The dealer sells the K&N in the parts dept. ,,,go figure....

Well

Here is the study that you should look at for a lot more information... it is objective.. not subjective...
