I'm planning my 6.5 turbo install.

Normally the 6.5 would dump the return oil through a tube in a block off plate where our mechanical fuel pump sits. If I go this route I have to install an electric fuel pump and find or make the block off plate with the tube.

Second option would be to return the oil through a tube welded on the oil pan. This tube would have to stick up a few inches above the pan.

Third option, something I haven't hear of yet, is returning through the oil filler cap. I could be as simple as putting a fitting on the cap, or as complex as adding a tube on the bottom of the cap to make sure the oil does't make it to the CDR valve.

Any opinions on these options?

Speaking of the CDR valve, do I need to run the 6.5 turbo CDR instead of the N/A version? I've read that the opening pressures are different. I'd rather use something that I can mount in the stock 6.2 location.

You can't run the turbo drain thru the oil cap unless you buy a pump designed for it. Gravity is what drains the turbo and if the drain is higher, it will flood and drown in its own oil, killing it.

The 6.5 uses the fuel pump area so thats what I would do, and simply add teh 6.5 lift pump which I feel is a good upgrade anyhow.

Yep, use the turbo CDR and put it in the stock location.

The lift pumps they put on the 6.5s are not very good, I won't recommend them.

Using the fuel pump area seems like a good option; maybe there's a plate on the 6.5s you can get that has the connector for the turbo drain.

The Banks kit has a plate behind the fuel pump for drain oil .

Thats what the 6.5 TD's do, ;)

My turbo has the drain line going directly into the oil pan with a fitting towards the front and top of the pan. I have a spare 6.2 engine that had a turbo on it as well and it is set up the same way.

A little off topic but I finally reached 100 mark!! Yea! Ok, Im easily excited.

Thanks, I completely forgot the oil drains by gravity.

Anyone know where to get the fuel pump blockoff plate for the oil tube?

Nothing wrong with the 6.5 lift pump. It's just like most other electric lift pumps. I don't care for them, but they're certainly good enough to use.

not to hijack, but i plumbed my turbo into the oil pan with a 1" fitting TIG welded into the pan. its near the front of the motor, and at the top of the pan. my question is.. is there anyway the oil could back clear up the tube into the turbo? i am getting some oil in my intake, andits blowing some blue smoke. but i havent added the 6.5 CDR (i do have one) one more thing. i cant get the boost gauge to work- new gauge, and i drilled and tapped a fitting into the upper manifold. and i can hear the turbo spool at higher rpm's. once again this isnt to hijack, but maybe this info could be useful to other turbo projects.

Pull the charge air plumbing off and look for oil. You may have a seal out in the turbo causing it to bypass oil into the intake.
