: Replacement Steering Shaft Question
Goin Camping 01-14-2005, 01:53 PM Called dealer today reference getting shaft replaced.
Service guys says they are not replacing shafts at this
time, only doing the grease fix. He claims GM will not
let him replace shafts at this time, only allowing the
grease job fix. I'm wondering if he just wants to get
paid by GM twice for working on it. Once for a
grease job and later for shaft replacement.
I feel like he is giving me the grease job.
mine is in the shop as I tyep, will see what they do. I mentioned the TSB but gave no other guidance
Max Payne 01-14-2005, 02:30 PM They did change the TSB from "replace" back to "lube" to help alleviate the backorder situation.
cowdoc 01-14-2005, 03:37 PM Mine has been on order since before Christmas, but the stealer assures me that it is on its way, so it will be replaced. My dad has an'04 Chevy. He didn't even know he had a problem with his. He had it in for another problem and they replaced his that day. Go figure!!
SSNIGHTMARE 01-14-2005, 03:57 PM I had mine replace twice in the last 2 months, and lubed at least 2 times before that. The thing still isnt right though.
Max Payne 01-14-2005, 04:09 PM If it has been worked on 4 times and still isn't right, chances are that isn't the problem. Have them look elsewhere. Duh!
SSNIGHTMARE 01-14-2005, 04:17 PM I told them the first time it went in and all they did was lube the steering shaft that wasnt the problem. They insist the intermediate shaft is the problem though. Ive looked extensively to find the problem, but cant find anything out wrong.
I see you sig. says you are a master tec. is there anything else in the front suspension gm is having a problem with? I have posted this in the ask the techs section with no responses yet.
Thanks
Max Payne 01-14-2005, 05:31 PM Noises that mimic the int. shaft clunk could be: Loose shock mounts, loose eccentrics, loose antenna mast, loose hood hinges, broken sway bar end links, loose front bumper bolts, loose body mount bolts, nerf bars, etc...
Ahh, I see in your sig that you have Westin Step Bars. Take them off and see what happens to the noise. I bet you will be suprised...
Kurt W. 01-14-2005, 08:05 PM I just went to the dealer Monday to order one, he said that its on a nationwide backorder which I knew. He said it would be a month, well he just called today and its in already. So I'm getting mine done next week.
dmaxalliTech 01-14-2005, 08:53 PM l wouldnt pull the bars off( I'm to lazy), just make sure that the front mount is not hitting the frame. Its easy to get it close on assembly. You can usually look carefully and see where it has been rubbing the frame because the undercoating is worn off. Also where the actual bar attatches to the bracket there should be an insulator if its missing it may cause some noise...
Shafts are something like 140,000 on backorder IIRC.
catch007 01-16-2005, 08:42 PM Did my int. shaft yesterday with the GM grease kit. Some glaring short comings came to light. :(
1 The kit had more grease than the factory had put in.
2 The factory grease was less than a teaspoon, only on the bottom side of the inner shaft. Just a little up the splines. Grease appears to be very light consistency.
3 The kit grease is black and a stiffer consistency. Should stay in place longer especially when it's pushed to the top side of the inner shaft splines per the instructions. :)
Again it looks like GM has saved a couple of pennys in production only to loose dollars in customer satisfaction. Don't know where shafts are assembled but the General should send grease kits and instructions to those people.
96dragshee 01-16-2005, 09:15 PM Had my truck in for the shaft two weeks ago. They pulled the shaft and greased it and put me on the list for the updated shaft.About a two to three month wait.

My step bars are welded because they didn't line up correctly, so i doubt they are making noise. Also the noise is apparent at very slow speed like in a parking lot where the frame shouldnt be moving a whole lot. I just wanted to know if gm was having any problems with any steering or suspension parts that I could check out.
