There are much better performing oils out there for a fraction of the cost. If you got a good deal on it, then no harm.

Royal Purple in years past had issues with shear stability and poor TBN retention. I've seen a number of UOA's that puts RP oil in a bad light. I've also called RP and have asked questions in regards to the base stock that they use and they won't give any information whatsoever (that's a turn off). Schaeffer's, Red Line, Amsoil and a few others are open in regards to their base stock and independent testing results while RP is secretive in their info. given out to the buying public.

It would be nice if you could sample in a few thousand miles to see how the oil is doing.

I know people who swear by it and people who say stay away, neither have a good reason why. An amsoil rep told me RP uses a moly in there oil, then proceded to say "ya know what moly does?" Whan I asked what, he said "its bad on the motor." - Typical answer from ANY rep, there just there to sell a product and use the facts they learned.

Anyway, I think Rp seems good but opted for mobil 1 cause of the price (mustang). I use RP gear oil in rear ends but thats about it (mustang).

I dont have a good answer weather its good or bad. If I were to spend the extra cash on syn. motor oil I'll prolly go Amsoil. my 2 cents.

I can just say that in my experience RP did not hold as good of oil pressure in my truck as Mobil 1 did when towing.

I think the moly problem is a thing of the past. I saw that same info. Schaeffers uses it and someone will chime in here soon and say that's the only way to go?? Just one of a few good anti-wear additive.

Thanks for the info. I see lots of guys using it in high perf applications. I wish all the specialty lubes: Amsoil, Schaffers, Red line, would be sold by local auto parts stores. I hate having to order oil when i can just go to town and buy it.

There are a number of oils that use moly, and for good reason. It's a great anti-wear additive. All moly in oil is in soluble form, so the Amsoil rep that told you that it will essentially clog up passage ways, etc. needs to learn about oil and how it's formulated.

Darn near every oil manufacturer (Schaeffer's, Chevron Delo, Royal Purple, Mobil One, Motul, Red Line, Pennzoil, etc) out there uses moly in either their entire lineup, or in some of their oils throughout their lineup.

Bottom line, soluble moly is another anti-wear additive out there that performs very well.

Getting those stores to carry it is like pulling teeth. I've tried every parts store in this town.

Thats a real shame:mad: It s just more convienent to go buy at the parts store. I cant see how keeping a case or two of different oils would hurt them.

In my area, I am seeing more and more Amzoil on the parts shelves every day. Even found an Ace Hardware with motor oil and tranny fluid

A lot of 'high performance' people use it because they either get it free (sponsor) or really cheap. Same applies for all products, so don't think I'm singling out Royal Purple. Remember, most racers don't put much mileage on an engine before they tear it down for rebuild. In those situations, I think any good motor oil would work fine - with the exception of course of long races like NASCAR - because of the heat factor.

I have used different brands (except Royal Purple), and always come back to Mobil 1. Mobil's track record is very good, and it is readily available when I travel. BTW, I've been using synthetic oil since 1978.
