I am expierencing a clunking/popping noise in my steering. The noise is intermitent and may not be present for several days at a time. This has been going on for the last 6k miles or so. It feels like when you turn the steering wheel that something all of a sudden unloads and pops. I have been taking the truck into the dealer for the last 2k miles with no results. The truck has been in between 8 and 10 times. At first they thought it was the intermediate steering shaft, but after 2 of these they finally decided thats not the problem. I can not see anything wrong, and nothing seems loose when I jack the truck up. The truck now has a little over 36k on it, and I would like to get it fixed while the dealer will still consider it under waranty. Any input would be appreciated.

The steering int shaft lube is the common problem with those for that described complaint. What did they do for the problem all the other times and did they try to isolate the noise to the steering column or steering components?

Most times it resulted in another lube of the intermediate shaft. The dealer said they could not duplicate the noise after if left. I even took the service manger for a ride and demonstrated the problem, but once I left they said they could not get it make the noise for them.

All I can say is be persistant or try another dealer. The steering gear boxes occasionally will make noise as you have described. I know the tech side of stories like this, as I am a GM tech. Insist a tech ride with you so he can get a feel for how to replicate the noise. Good luck.
