: Stock vs S&B Intake dyno results
fire0021 02-07-2008, 01:29 PM OK guys i was at the dyno yesterday and had a chance to do some controlled testing with a stock intake and s&b cold air intake. and i hope theese results help answer some of the questions all of you have if its worth it or not .
Run 1 stock tune s&B intake 319rwhp 557tq
Run 2 stock tune s&Bintake 320 Rwhp 552tq
Run1 stock tune stock intake non modded 321 hp 561 tq
Run 2 stock tune stock intake non moded 320hp 558 tq
Run 1 race tune stock intake unmodded 515 hp 986tq
Run 2 race tune stock intake unmodded 518 hp 990 tq
Run 1 race tune s&b intake 530 hp 1040 tq
Run 2 race tune s&b intake 529hp 1045 tq
so as you can see from the results in stock we didnt see any increases and actually a little loss. but with a 500+ Hp we saw some segnificant gains 14+ hp at the wheels. not bad hope this helps any one trying to make a decision I think 480 rwhp and up and a intake will help any thing below and it just looks cool. I dint test a modded stock intake becuase i dint want to cut my aribox apart just yet.
AlligatorPerformance 02-07-2008, 01:37 PM Nice write up Tommy and big ups to S&B for the Intake. Thanks for doing the testing, beating up your truck and taking the time to swap out intake systems so that we all know what to expect. And a big thanks to Jay @ S&B Filters for supplying the Intake.
DSTRBD 02-07-2008, 01:42 PM Nice job. Can you post the graphs? I would like to see if the power comes on quicker with the S&B as well. Those are pretty significant gains, more than I thought it would be.
Unit453 02-07-2008, 01:45 PM That was interesting.
fire0021 02-07-2008, 06:35 PM No problem chad and thank you as well for helping out with this and S&B.yea I will get the graphs up for you when i get a chance. yes we where suprised to see the gains and the losses even the dyno operators where suprised at the results both good and bad. the othere thing to note with this intake is it really is no louder then stock. wich Ipersonally like
samdogmx 02-07-2008, 08:13 PM very intresting results,
i'd like to see the graphs too if you dont mind posting them.
Jason Duramax 02-08-2008, 01:34 AM COOL, thanks for the effort. I'd love to see PPE modded LBZ results, or has that been done?
dirtball 02-08-2008, 08:26 AM COOL, thanks for the effort. I'd love to see PPE modded LBZ results, or has that been done?

Big Fred 02-10-2008, 01:47 PM Wow I can't believe that an intake system got you that much extra torque with a programmer. Good work
BHoward6.6 02-10-2008, 02:50 PM COOL, thanks for the effort. I'd love to see PPE modded LBZ results, or has that been done?

DMax5 02-14-2008, 06:10 PM really nice break down. i have the intake with stock tunning right now w/ mbrp duals and now reading ur breakdown i cant wait to chip the truck. thanks
DuraRaj 02-17-2008, 03:46 AM Right on!!!
TheBac 02-17-2008, 07:24 AM Hmm....I've been waiting to see if anyone had ever tested that intake setup. Looks like I could get over the hump (>500rwhp) with it. Thanks.

I wonder how would a moded stock intake would do?
fire0021 02-20-2008, 01:27 AM Imo even thoe i havent tested it yet i thnk a modded stock intake can flow better then stock over 480 rwhp but not nearly as much as a aftermarket intake like the s&b one or any other on. the stock filters just arent made to flow tht much air. the effect of needing more flow amplifes the more hp your making.
Bodis22 02-20-2008, 01:43 AM Fire, since you are a HP man and knowledgable in the area, tell me what my estimated HP is. I am pretty sure that it is 365 Flywheel stock = what maybe 290 - 310 to the tires + 110 tune and K&N = maybe 5 or nothing. Full exhaust add anything......maybe 5-10. What is my # .......420 - 430 or so.
fire0021 02-20-2008, 01:53 AM conservative probbaly some where between 390-415 rwhp but its hard because no one has any hard number on the quad programing. coud be more my truck stock programing with straight pipe dynoed at 320 rwhp
Bodis22 02-20-2008, 03:09 AM Lets assume my stock tuning + Exhaust is at 320 and quad puts a solid 110 to the tires as claimed and I have + or - 430. Will my Transgo Jr. hold the 110 tune and drive how I want.
fire0021 02-20-2008, 03:28 AM imo no you are pushing the limits of what the stock converter will hold especially with agresevie driveing. tht is right at the limit
Bodis22 02-20-2008, 04:02 AM Thanks. I guess my girl Allison may die or get traded out for a Sunny Girl from the Coast.
GMCJOE 02-22-2008, 01:11 AM Nice numbers Tommy with the S&B intake in place. Good HP increase, but also noticed you picked up quite a bit of torque as well.
Saw the intake on your truck that day and it looks pretty sweet. I like how they incase it with the clear so you can see the filter.
Good thread with the dyno #'s doing a true comparison between stock intake to S&B.
MMLMM 02-22-2008, 01:16 AM Nice job Tommy!
I was planning on the exact same Idea Wednesday but work wouldnt let me off this week Oh well at least the numbers are posted.
I better get mine on tomorrow night before I head to Bakersfield.....
vortecfcar 02-22-2008, 01:44 AM Just some graphs for this data.
The Blue Top graphs are HP of the Stocker Vs. the S&B with the big tune.
The bottom blue are for the stock tune
The Top red graphs are the corresponding Tq #'s. Not the easiest thing to read, stare at it for a while ;).

fire0021 02-22-2008, 01:53 AM thanks for getting that posted up nick
samdogmx 02-22-2008, 05:30 AM thanks for posting the graph, looks like this is a worthwile mod if you running a big tune.
scottd1022 02-22-2008, 09:46 AM Great work. Thats awesome!
hemisareslow 02-24-2008, 08:15 PM note to self....intake waste of money unless I mod tranny and run a race tune...
tampaDMAX 02-24-2008, 09:57 PM imo no you are pushing the limits of what the stock converter will hold especially with agresevie driveing. tht is right at the limit
WITH THE 4'' TURBO BACK, S&B, QUAD ON 110 WITH DPF DELETE AND MY TRANSGO, MY DAILY DRIVING OF CONSERVATIVE IS OK CORRECT?
BUT WILL IT STILL HOLD WITH THE OCCASIONAL BURN OF A CIVIC FROM A RED LIGHT ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK?

the only answer to that is "time will tell"
my opinion, your trans will be slipping soon, if it hasent already. Just because you havent limped it does not mean you are not slipping

SAME SCENARIO AS ABOVE...WILL GETTING A T/C 1056 OR SO HOLD WELL..
IM TRYING TO AVOID DOING A WHOLE NEW TRANNY SWAP.
