: Need help with green keys of the Duramax
Kurt W. 01-13-2005, 01:13 AM I posted this on the Duramax forum too, out of ideas!
Me and a buddy of mine were going to install green keys on our HD's. He has a 3/4 6.0 and I have a 3/4 Duramax, both 02's. His was a cinch, after a few corners of course. Mine (the Duramax) was hell, I could not get the keys jacked up enough to put the bolt back in. I actually lifted that side of the truck up off the jack stand before getting it even close. What should I do! Please Help! I can't have his truck being taller than mine.
Buy a Dodge ;) It comes pre lifted. Can't help you with the keys other than the fact that they should all install the same on all of the trucks.
502_Jimmy 01-13-2005, 08:06 AM Are you using the correct tool to install the keys? Never had a problem when using the tool.
John
GMC2500HD 01-13-2005, 08:37 AM If you are not using the tool then you will have problems, otherwise you will need to go to Sears and get a 7 ton gear puller. You should have no problems after that..
Kurt W. 01-13-2005, 09:34 AM Don't know what brand it was, it was a 6 ton though. Should only require a 5 ton. Wasn't working so we make a tool to fit on a bottle jack and thats when it started to lift up the side of the truck. The gear puller just kept slipping, and took a small chunk out of the frame where it was clamped on.

Kurt W. 01-13-2005, 06:30 PM I finally got it, did a little more brain busting to figure it out. I do NOT want to do that again using a gear puller. I had butterflies in my stomach the entire time. That is alot of tension on that puller, thanks God its over.
Kurt W. 01-13-2005, 10:21 PM One more question, how have you been spacing the front shock? I want to do it temporary. Does anyone have any pics? I tried to put a one inch spacer on it but than I couldn't bolt it back down. So I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. And also is the ride supposed to be kinda a bouncy feel?
03GMC2500HD 01-14-2005, 09:30 AM If your ride is bouncey then you have cranked it to far. Back it down some and the ride will get normal again. Did you take a measurement before and after?
Kurt W. 01-14-2005, 08:20 PM Never did take a measuement, guess that was dumb. Right now it rides like a leaf sprung front end. I Really need to get a pair of the Bistien shocks, still using the factory's. When I put the bolts in on the TB I cranked them til there was 1 inch of thread left, which really isn't too much. Will the alignment shop have to drop it down a bit to get a good measurement anyways?

You cranked them too much!! back off some on each until the bounce goes awway, the put some Bistien's on. Ohh and how I got mine on was I got my bigest, longest extension socket, put it on the end of my jack, and positioned it under the tail of the key. Jacked it up some, and that slowly moved the key, tightned down the gear puller, jacked it up some more until the gear puller got loose, tightened, repeated until I was able to put that block back in under the key. Doing it that way always ensured the gear puller stayed straight, and didn't slip, I had the same problem at first with the gear puller not staying straight and slipping off.
TheBac 01-15-2005, 09:30 AM You guys using gear pullers for this job scare the SH*T outta me. Some day we're gonna hear of some monkey that almost killed himself. http://dieselplace.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=951
With the greenkeys, you don't have to put very much adjustment on them with the bolts, since the key itself does the work. With my H2's I've got the pass side one sitting on the stop, and the drivers side one adjusted a couple/three turns up. Works fine.

killerbee 01-15-2005, 10:07 AM Kurt, the bilsteins are not going to help your ride problem. Search this forum, you'll find tons of information.
dmaxalliTech 01-15-2005, 11:20 AM Tom, it wasnt that scary when we did yours was it?
TheBac 01-15-2005, 02:24 PM No Eric...since you used the correct tool. I keep trying to advertise your "tool rental" service to all these newbies doing crazy sh*t with gear pullers, though.
Only thing that freaked me out was how bloody FAST you work!!!!

5thgeartapped 01-15-2005, 02:34 PM I put mine in by putting a gear puller on the frame and using a socket with a long handed ratchet. The i put a floor jack under the ratchet so that just in case the puller broke, it wouldnt send the ratchet out like a boomerang. Long handle lets you get away from the carnage faster.

Doing it that way always ensured the gear puller stayed straight, and didn't slip, I had the same problem at first with the gear puller not staying straight and slipping off.I tried that too, but it wound up lifting the enitre side of the truck. I ended up using the gear puller and a c clap to keep it from spreading(even though it has a stop to prevent this)and used a strap to keep it from shifting from side to side. It worked but very, very, scary. I agree, gear pullers do suck. I nearly crapped myself a couple of times when it slipped on me.
