My buddy's dad has a 2000 Cummins 24V. On his way home yesterday it just died. Shut off and will not restart. Cranks and Cranks and Cranks. We pulled to filter and it looked pretty clean. Changed it anyways. Wonderful cummins bleed technique is crack open the 1,3,and 4 injector and start crankin till diesel comes out then really quickly close em. So im told. Well we cranked for 25 min until the batts died and another 10 hooked up to another truck. Never had any diesel come out. tried all three open. just one open, two open, closed and tried nothin. Is there an easier way to bleed these things or is this it. What else do you think could be wrong. Why just die driving down the road. Truck has half tank fuel, fluids are good?
Any help would be appriciated.
Tomorrow puttin it on the gooseneck and towing it back to his place or a shop if we cant get it started in the morn.
Thanks in advance

The VP44 injection pump is more than likely dead. And the lift pump is probably dead too. P0216 is the dead injection pump code. Cycle the key 3 times on, off, on, off, on. Leave the key in the on position and watch the codes that scroll across the odometer. The injection pumps on the 24 valves suck.

How many mile does it have on it? My guess is the injection pump went out b/c of the lift pumping being died for some time and not having the proper pressure to keep the injection pump lubed.

Im also betting its an injection and or lift pump thats bad. Seen this happen on a couple of our work trucks.

On my buddies 24v, to run the lift pump...you only bump the starter. You can hear it run, then stop. Bump again 5 more times and then start cranking. I've never had to crack any injectors on that motor. On my 12 valves I did - they were always angry at me when they didn't have their precious fuel. IF you cannot hear anything happen after the starter bump, the lift pump is garbich. That IS a common issue. Get fuel to the filter and into the lines before you start poking at the IP. Check for codes, as said before, and if there are any put them up here so we can tell you what they are. If there aren't any, go for getting the fuel up to the filter and lines.
You can always use the tank pressure method on those too - drill a hole in a gas cap, put it on, and put some air (not too MUCH) in the tank and have someone start cranking.
Hope this helps.

if you just bump the starter with the injector lines loose you should see some fuel soon. the lift pump will push it through. if you hear the lift pump running it does not mean it is good, the lift pump can run and not supply fuel. if you opt to crank the engine be careful. your min pressure for the injector to open is around 4300 psi and if you get a spray out of the loose injector line if can hurt you before you know it. also be advised that some of the early 24v engines had one time use crosstubes. it is what the injector line threads on. if you have the one time use crosstubes they can leak when reassembled and cause problems. hope this helps
