Hiya everyone.

I am ready to take the plunge and open up my intake by grinding out all the webbing they leave around the EGR valve. I see that the procedure is well documented on Turbine Doc's site and Kennedy's site, but can someone tell me what gaskets and parts I need to have ready to do this? While I am at it I want to do the pre-turbo thermocouple pickup and boost tap. Thanks for the help and advice. If you have part numbers, that would rock too. Thanks!

You might want the upper intake gasket. I recently posted an o'rieleys part number.

I would pull the turboexhaust to tap the boss but it might be done on the truck.
The boost tap is the same proceedure softer metal. What about blocking the lower intake exhaust ports and EGR?

Not trying to scare you but with my thermo coupler kit from autometer it said specifically to install it post turbo. I haven't heard of one blowing apart but you'd never be able to go back on them if it did under the warranty period. I was going to put mine pre-turbo when i did the injectors until i re-read the instructions that came with it. Many are running pre-turbo without a hitch as far as i've heard.
Anyone know if any of the factory setups are pre-turbo on any that are included when you buy a new truck?

The amount of pyro tip sticking into the manifold is minimal, like a pencil tip. The adjustable npt fitting on mine was made to case all but the tip. I will add that I lost an intake blade into my motor and never heard a thing 'cept I did have to replace a piston awhile back.

But your pyro probe was still intacked right?

QM, I will search part number, but isn't there an EGR donut thing I need and the actual gasket where the EGR bolts to the upper intake? I have to at least make it LOOK like the EGR is there since Nevada has emission inspection.

Yes Lion with L56 there is a gasket on center to seal between center of uppper & lower intakes, that is a GM only part, $5 or so IIRC last time I bougt one. So for L56 you need both outer & inner gasket

Pryo tip is fine as far as I know. I got the upper gasket at o'rieleys for $12 FELpro gasket MS90176-1. www.rockauto.com has them cheaper at $4.

Thanks for the part numbers and advice. I am going to talkle this sometime this weekend as long as the on-call phone doesn't ring.

there is a gasket under the egr where it mounts to the upper plenum also so thats 3 gaskets you will need

Won't be one when Lion does the EGR mod I sent him in PM

Wahoo! I figured out the part numbers for the EGR "donut" Gasket!!

DELCO Part # 219167
GM Part # 10191428

IMO, the EGR and the "S" intake do their best work occupying space in the landfill, so that's where I sent them.

MDT,

I would love to do the same thing.. that and launch the vac pump and go with a turbo master. However, Nevada is a smog check state for diesels and all that HAS to be at least "there" So, it's gut the kitty, blank the EGR and make it look believeable. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gif

when the stealer replaced my IP one of the times they cracked my lower intake i ordered one through a salvage yard locally and got lucky the sent me an "F" upper and lower for $150 man was i happy.

Anybody here got an 'S' manifold they want to trade for an 'F'? I know it sounds silly, but I'm going to hook my EGR back up, atleast let it operate in the winter to warm the engine up.

TDG, I would love to. I wonder if they would question me with the F intake on there when I go for inspection. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

They would have to look really close to even tell, I"m talking about just the lower intake, I still have the 'S' upper.

i've got the "F" upper and lower and the egr valve just sits on top like it supposed to. i even put the gasket under it to pull the whole farse together. i imagine it still operates in vain just like mother pcm wants it to.

The EGR's not such a bad idea, just a little short sighted in this application. The heat of the exhaust gas is sapposed to replace a % of fuel for power under load to incease the efficiency and lower emmissions. If the exhaust came out of the block and through a disposable soot trap then into the intake it wouldn't crud it up like it does.

I"m still going to keep the breathers on so no wet crankase air enters the intake to mix with the sooty exaust and cause it to crud up.

Well I did the intake mod today and the oil change to Rotella 5W-40 synthetic diesel oil. The ass-o-meter says it's considerably quicker and I can't hear the turbo as much I did right before the mod. I wonder if that is because the intake isn't as restricted as it was before?

I also did the "solid EGR gasket" mod too http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif

Now, I have to get the http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/censored.gifed-up downpipe off and get a fat exhaust!

Then, to get any more performance , I am sure I will have to chrome something http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. Sorry, couldn't help it.. Pep-boys was selling a ton of "dress up kits"

Tons of thanks to the list and Turbine Doc. People like you make owning one of these things possible!

just curious if this intake mod would work on a mechanical 93. I have never pulled off the intake before, but would if someone could tell me it works and what kind of gains i could expect. Also, what would I expect to pay to have the webbing and such machined out? thanks

if your '93 has an egr valve.

Reminds me of a saying we have around here for that kind of rig- "Looks like he drove down the junk isle at Pep Boys with the crap magnet turned on!"):h

Hahahah I love it!! It also lends truth to the old adage "Chrome don't get you home" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/hihi.gif
