: Can't prime fuel system

I changed the fuel filter and thought I had it properly primed and the truck started for about 20 seconds and then died.

I have tried adding 10 gallons and jacked up the rear to assist gravity flow to the engine compartment.

I cracked the bleeder screw on the top near the pump and have been pumping it for hours.

I have tried pumping it with the bleeder closed to no avail.

I can pump it for a couple hundred times and still hear air coming out with every pump.

I need to leave to go out of town to pick a car I am going to do some work on,

Any help would be appreciated!

Here is my phone #: 630-878-3907, Thanks in advance!

Did you get the old rubber gasket off of the center threaded pipe? Any ideas of where the air is hissing from? Any fuel leaking?

Yes, the center gasket came off.

The air comes out only when the bleeder screw with the o-ring is cracked open.

When i did mine the first time it was a PITA. First, best way to go in is by removing the inner fender and come over the tire, IMO.

Did you fill the filter up prior to putting it back on? If not you have a large void to fill. Do you have a lift pump? If so crack a line pre CP -3 and let it run.

first off make sure the o ring didnt get screwed up when you were turning the filter on...

next tighten the screw then pump up the filter until it gets hard

then slowly loosen the bleeder screw until you hear the first bit of air come out and stop..let it stop blowing air then tighten the screw up and repeat...

might take 3 times ...

The filter is full up to the inside of the center hole that has the rubber gasket in the center.

Is the lift pump the thing I have pressed probably 12000 times so far today?

What is a pre CP-3?

You might try 'compressing' a little air into the tank(shop hose and a rag to seal around the filler)..........that should push it up there;). (of course you will want the bleed screw open with your helper standing over it to close when you get fuel).

I put the original filter back on to make sure the gasket was not messed up.

The Napa brand filter needed me to put the outer rim thinner gasket on it.

It was not pre-installed.

Are you saying to pump it up with the bleeder closed?

I am not sure I can get my air compressor lines all the way out to the truck but that is not a bad idea!

I do have 165 PSI in my air compressor tanks!

My helper just might end up being a prom queen; well so be it!

Don't know if this will work for you but it did for me. If you have a friend around get him in the truck. Prime the filter. Then when hes turning the truck over keep priming the filter.

ya you should have no problem...if you run back outside and start over....it sounds like the first time you didnt have it primed right..ill be on here for a minute let me know what happens...

DO NOT PUT 165 PSI AIR PRESSURE IN YOUR TANK!!!!! BOOM. Turn the regulator down to 10 or 15 PSI.

PaoloCastellano

yes for sure pump it up first with the screw tightend

I was told by one dealer to pump with the bleeder open and by another dealer to pump it with the bleeder closed.

Are you sure I should do it with the bleeder closed?

PoPsRacing

Yea, bleeder closed. Never fill your filter before installing it, that's unfiltered fuel going right into your injectors.

PaoloCastellano

Yea, bleeder closed

I'll go do it now.

You probably have air between the filter and cp3. There is a schrader valve on the front of the engine you could use also to bleed air off. Leave the bleeder open until the fuel comes out with out air. Then close it and and pump it up the rest of the way unitl hard. I think if you pump it with the bleeder closed right away you can force air up to the the line to the cp3.

I had this problem once, i took the filter back off noticed the water sensor was a lil loose (not much at all) so i turned it about a quarter of a inch with pliers, put the filter back on (making sure the o ring didnt fall out or come out of place when putting it on) and it started within 3 min. Incase it did matter this wasnt on my lb7, it was on my dads 04 lly.

Hey guys. Paolo is a good friend of mine. Truck is bone stock. No lift pump etc.

P. Cp3 is the fuel pump on the motor.

I'm supposed to be buying this truck in two days hahaha.

Paolo builds the baddest twin turbo vipers ever but doesn't know much about diesels. Great mechanic just needs some guidance on this stuff.

Thanks for the insight. Call him at any time, he's always up.

Now he'll have to knock off $1000. :D

He's in Elburn. If you stop by you will never leave lol. At least you can see where I took him for a ride in a 1300rwhp car and had it sideways at 150mph on a country road.

Hey guys, no luck.

I am going to have my wife hold the pump down while I put a little air pressure in the tank. THere is plenty of fuel in there

Tom, you can call me @ 630-878-3907!

I just tried having the pump pressed in and putt in air pressure in the tank with the bleeder first closed and then open and nothing.

I pumped with the bleeder closed and got nothing.

Just in case, here's how we did it to the 02.

1) Open bleeder screw
2) Apply pressure to tank (And Hold)
3) Pump if needed, apply air until you see fuel bleed out the bleeder.
4) Close bleeder
5) Push primer pump 5 - 10 times (with bleeder closed)
6) Start cranking.

PaoloCastellano
02-06-2008, 10:25 AM
It started!

I drilled a hole in a gas cap from Napa, tapped it for 1/8 pipe, put a 1/8 pipe to 1/4" barb on the cap and on the air gun, pressurezed the system and it started in about 20 seconds like Tom and someone else told me it would!

Thanks for all your help! Paolo Castellano

Give him a ring, I'm sure he would be happy to have you stop by and take you on a quick 200mph pull in a 4digit rwhp car.
