Here's my response.
Hi there and nice to here from you. The air intake is one mod that I haven't gotten around to doing yet but have done a ton of investigating it. My 2000 hose off the turbo is a lot more squished than yours appears to be and probably makes it work to hard to get its air. Looks like your fender hole is a little larger than mine in the 2000 so you should be getting good air from there. I hope to modify the intake system when it warms up, I'm still undecided as whether to use the fender hole or go ram air through the hood. Thanks for the tip on the place in Calgary, I may look them up.
quantum mechanic 01-12-2005, 05:14 PM I looked at the round element airbox today. The hose coming off it back to the turbo is worse than the '92-'94 flat filterbox, what with the turbo muffler tube and 180* bend between the filter neck and turbo inlet out of ribbed rubber hose. A mandrel bent pipe with a tap for the cdrv would do better stuck through the hood or not.
CanadianRigger 01-12-2005, 05:37 PM Hi QM,
Here's some pics Brad sent me of his 92 1 ton air box mods (hope he doesn't mind) He's been watching the place and sent me an email saying he's following my mods and gave me a place in Calgary that does air boxes and other stuff. I had to post the response here as sending him email just bounces back and i don't know his user name here otherwise i would have just PM'd him or maybe he's just a watcher. At any rate i figured he'd catch this post and be able to respond here.

Nice pics Brad.
steiner43511 01-12-2005, 06:14 PM what is the black elbow made out of and what is the diameter?
CanadianRigger 01-12-2005, 07:19 PM Its a 4" elbow, i dunno what its made out of but looks similiar to air intake tubes i've seen on other trucks.
quantum mechanic 01-12-2005, 08:07 PM I'm sure the CDRV played a role in the stock ribbed rubber boot remaining but looks good all the same.
spindrift 01-12-2005, 08:36 PM I tried to fit a full, 4" diameter tube on my K&N airbox but there isn't enough room between the airbox and the battery. I notice the battery is removed in these pictures. Hmmm. Maybe the coolant tank is larger on my '98.
steiner43511 01-13-2005, 11:57 PM will one of those red top batteries layed on its side fit where the stock air box is? then you could put a cone filter where the batteries is supposed to be and not have that 90 degree bend, it would be almost a straight shot into the turbo.
CanadianRigger 01-14-2005, 01:03 PM Steiner, I got another email from Brad and was going to type some of what he said here but hell why not just copy and paste the good parts!
"THE 4” ELBOW IS PVC, IT IS THE ONLY ONE I COULD FIND TO FIT, IT IS A TIGHT 4” 90 DEGREE ELBOW.
ALSO THE BATTERY IS SHOWN REMOVED BECAUSE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN AS I WAS JUST FINISHING THE INSTALL. THE BATTERY DOES FIT IN THE ORIGINAL TRAY, JUST HAD TO OPEN UP THE FORWARD LIP OF THE TRAY TO MOVE THE BATTERY FORWARD. I ALSO CUT OPEN THE INNER FENDER TO ENLARGE THE HOLE BUT AFTER I DID THAT I CUT OUT THE HOOD INSULATION FROM THE AIRBOW BACK TO THE COWL AND CUT BACK THE RUBBER TRIM THAT SEALS THE HOOD AT THE COWL AND I THINK I GET BETTER AIR FROM THERE."

BKNOPP 01-18-2005, 02:35 PM Hello, Cr.i Decided To Sign Up And Get Active On This Great Place To Learn More. I Had To Sign Up With The User Name Bknopp For Some Reason The Application Wouldn't Take Bradk. Anyway I Am Trying To Get A Few More Pictures Of The Cold Air Intake Hopefully Showing The Hood Insulation Cut Out. With The Hood Insulation Gone Over The Airbow I Can Really Hear The Turbo Whistle And Mine Is Only A Gm-1.
CanadianRigger 01-18-2005, 02:57 PM I called the guys you mentioned at that shop the other day and they sent me some more pics. Here they are.
steiner43511 01-18-2005, 03:02 PM i like it. how much for everything minus the filter?
BKNOPP 01-19-2005, 09:43 AM Just Curious, Steiner Why You Would Want A Cold Air Intake Minus The Filter. You Would Have To Contact Canadian Rigger And Ask Him For The Phone Number To The Shop In Calgary. If I Am Correct We Cannot Name Vendors On Here If They Are Not A Supporting Vendor.
CanadianRigger 01-19-2005, 11:32 AM Steiner,
I had my battery and air box out yesterday as i was fooling with some intake air design and pulled the plastic air director that redirects air flow from behind the signal light to the fender from underneath the battery mounting box. Anyways to answer your ealier question the battery will definately lay sideways on the inner fender with room to spare, (although mine leaked while sitting there) it will even stand up there but would have to have a new flat metal plate designed to hold it in place, i had a chunk of 1/2" plywood under mine on the fender and was able to close the hood without contacting the top posts but not much extra room left if any, so with say 5/16" metal plate under it, it should fit fine in there.

I'd guess steiner already has a filter or a good priced contact for one.
178 RWHP - very good, i hope i'm pushing at least that but wont know till Febuary when i get it back in for some re-tuning while sitting on the dyno!:ro)
steiner43511 01-19-2005, 02:02 PM good to know. the reason i asked about if you could lay the battery on its side is because then you could use those redtop batteries and wouldnt have to worry about them leakin. ill find my own filter. my buddy found this one from napa that is huge.
