: NSBU Covered by GM warrantee to 100,000 miles
stotts 01-12-2005, 01:00 PM FYI,
Some may already know the NSBU is covered to 100,000 on GM/Chev but I had a hard time finding it out so I thought I would pass it on.
My duramax has 51,000 and I just had my NSBU replaced this week. I figured since I was beyond the 3 yr/ 36000 mile warranty I would have to pay out of pocket.
I took it to a large Chev dealer and he charged me nearly $300 to change it. Irritated with the price, I called a different chev dealer 30 miles away to see if they could have done better and their service dept mgr said it was covered under the emissions policy (who knows why it would be under emissions) and therefore covered until 100,000 miles. When I called back the dealer that replaced it he denied it at first, then went to look it up and sure enough, - IT IS COVERED. He said he certifies every year with GM and would have missed that test question and would have never guessed it be covered under the emissions policy.
So they credited back my card and submitted it to GM. They have changed alot of them for several years now and charged everyone whose 3/36000 warranty was expired, so they are going to have to go back and try to reimburse plenty of people.
My guess, is that many if not most dealerships overlook this as a warranteed item. If you paid for it and were under 100,000 miles I would be going back to the dealership for money back.
ratlover 01-12-2005, 01:27 PM EEK! its only a 50$ switch and an easy job.
dmaxalliTech 01-12-2005, 01:54 PM I'll check into that, I am unaware of it being covered as an emisions item
stotts 01-12-2005, 04:05 PM I called Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 about it and they verified that it was still covered under warrantee and were ready to contact the dealer if necessary, but luckily it wasn't necessary.
As for the price of the original fix, the dealer told me it would be about half parts and half labor, so I looked on my GM invoice and saw the part #29540479 for the switch. Cost of the part was $165.17.
Then I looked up my closest allison transmission dealer and called them. Without describing the problem I asked for a price on part number #29540479. Guess what it was? $45.13. He said that the local GM dealer regularly bought these from them (I guess when they ran out of the regularly GM supplied ones and needed some fast). Pretty good mark up - 366%.
Trader Jack 01-13-2005, 07:39 PM I just called GM customer service this morning since I had the same part replaced by the dealer on Monday. They emphatically told me that it is only warranteed for 36,000 unlike the engine which is 100,000. And, it is definitely "not" covered under emissions. This afternoon my delaer had their factory rep call me to explain the whole deal.
stotts 01-14-2005, 11:00 AM Trader Jack,
I called the dealer that knew it was covered and this is what he said. It is listed in the
Policy and Procedure Manual
Article 1.2 Page 15 (in the version he had)
It was listed under the:
6.6 Duramax Diesel
Emission Warrantee Parts List
Transmission Gear Selection Switch (for the diesel engines only)
Hope this helps you get your money back.
supatrucka 01-14-2005, 11:57 AM Boy i got porked i paid $139 for the switch back in feb 04 just called my dealer and he wasn't aware of the warranty he's going to cheak it out for me total bill $179. thanks for the heads up guys. dave
supatrucka 01-14-2005, 05:32 PM Just called gm customer servise and they said it wasn't covered under the emissions warratee. dave
stotts 01-16-2005, 11:57 AM Something isn't adding up. I have two dealers (one newly educated) within 30 miles of me that both say it is covered and they credited back my card and were going to submit it as a warrantee covered item.
This week I am going to go to the dealer and have him show me in their manual where it states coverage. Maybe I can even get a picture of it and post on here.
duramaxdiesel 01-16-2005, 12:34 PM Is this part covered or not????
rooster 01-17-2005, 01:37 PM yes, NSBU Switch is covered for 100,000 KM's or 5 years in Canada. I spoke to a GM Rep. for this area (Winnipeg, MB) and it is definitely covered under emissions.
rooster 01-17-2005, 01:42 PM I goofed re[100,ooo]km should read 160,000 km
Max Power 01-17-2005, 01:43 PM I looked in the Warranty supplement that comes with the truck and it specifically lists the NSBU switch for the Duramax/allison as being covered under emissions warranty.
There are quite a few other interseting things covered as well.
AltaLad 01-17-2005, 03:59 PM yes, NSBU Switch is covered for 100,000 KM's or 5 years in Canada. I spoke to a GM Rep. for this area (Winnipeg, MB) and it is definitely covered under emissions.
Hmm interesting but since I've already paid to repair and sold the old truck, I wonder if I can get me monies back?
As a point of reference, does this 160,000km emission warrenty apply to the 8.1 gasser with the Allision as well?
Max Power 01-17-2005, 07:07 PM GMCSID, do you know if the shift cable would be covered? I had a friend break one and it was $250 Canadian.
burntb4 01-17-2005, 07:33 PM Is this part that the dealer says is a Neutral Safety Switch the same as a Neutral Safety Backup Switch and a Transmission Gear Selector Switch??
Frank Blum 01-17-2005, 09:17 PM Sid, can you explain why this section in listed if all the items are warrantied 100K ?
Important
Certain parts may be covered beyond these warranties if shown with asterisk(s) as follows:
(*) 7 years/70,000 miles, whichever comes first, California Emission Control System Warranty coverage.
(**) 8 years/80,000 miles, whichever comes first, Federal Emission Control System Warranty coverage. Also applies to California certified light duty and medium duty vehicles.
Later! Frank
GMCSID 01-17-2005, 09:39 PM Emission Control Systems Warranty
The emission warranty on your vehicle is issued in accordance with the U.S. Federal Clean Air Act. Defects in material or workmanship in GM emission parts may also be covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Bumper-to-Bumper coverage. There may be additional coverage on GM diesel engine vehicles. In any case, the warranty with the broadest coverage applies.
What Is Covered
The parts covered under the emission warranty are listed under "Emission Warranty Parts List" later in this section.
How to Determine the Applicable Emissions Control System Warranty (Light Duty Trucks Only)
State and Federal agencies may require different emission control system warranty for light duty trucks depending on:
Whether the truck is certified with a light duty or heavy duty emission control system.
Whether the truck is certified for California emissions in addition to Federal emissions.
To determine emissions eligibility: locate the emission control label in the engine compartment on the air cleaner assembly or on the engine. The language on the bottom left side of the label will describe if equipped with a light, medium, or heavy duty emission control system.
All light duty trucks are eligible for Federal Emissions Control System Warranty Coverage. If the emissions control label contains language stating the vehicle is certified to California emissions standards, the vehicle is also eligible for California Emissions Control System Warranty Coverage.
Federal Emission Control System Warranty
Federal Warranty Coverage
Car and Light Duty Truck equipped with Car and Light Duty Gasoline Engine
2 years or 24,000 miles and 8 years or 80,000 miles for the catalytic converter or vehicle, powertrain, control module, whichever comes first.
Light Duty Truck equipped with Heavy Duty Gasoline Engine
5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Light Duty Truck equipped with Heavy Duty Diesel Engine
5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Federal Emission Defect Warranty
GM warrants to the owner the following:
The vehicle was designed, equipped, and built so as to conform at the time of sale with the applicable regulations of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The vehicle is free from defects in material and workmanship which cause the vehicle to fail to conform with those regulations during the emission warranty period.
Emission related defects in the genuine GM parts listed under the Emission Warranty Parts List, including related diagnostic costs, parts and labor are covered by this warranty.
Federal Emission Performance Warranty
Some states and/or local jurisdictions have established periodic vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs to encourage proper maintenance of your vehicle. If an EPA-approved I/M program is enforced in your area you may also be eligible for Emission Performance Warranty coverage when all of the following three conditions are met:
The vehicle has been maintained and operated in accordance with the instructions for proper maintenance and use set forth in the owner manual supplied with your vehicle.
The vehicle fails an EPA-approved I/M test during the emission warranty period.
The failure results, or will result, in the owner of the vehicle having to bear a penalty or other sanctions, including the denial of the right to use the vehicle, under local, state, or federal law.
GM warrants that your dealer will replace, repair, or adjust to GM specifications, at no charge to you, any of the parts listed under the "Emission Warranty Parts List" later in this section which may be necessary to conform to the applicable emission standards. Non-GM parts labeled "Certified to EPA Standards" are covered by the Federal Emission Performance Warranty.
California Emission Control System Warranty
This section outlines the emission warranty that GM provides for your vehicle in accordance with the California Air Resources Board. Defects in material or workmanship in GM emission parts may also be covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Bumper-to-Bumper coverage. There may be additional coverage on GM diesel engine vehicles. In any case, the warranty with the broadest coverage applies.
This warranty applies if your vehicle meets both of the following requirements:
Your vehicle is registered in California or other states adopting California emission and warranty regulations*.
Your vehicle is certified for sale in California as indicated on the vehicle's emission control information label.
Important
*Currently MA, ME, and VT have California Emissions Warranty coverage for passenger cars and trucks up to 14,000 lbs. GVWR. (New York adopted California emission standards, but not the California emissions warranty. The Federal Emissions Control warranty applies to all vehicles in New York.)
Your Rights and Obligations (For Vehicles Subject to California Exhaust Emission Standards)
The Emission Control System Warranty on your vehicle is issued in accordance with the California Air Resources Board and GM. In California, new motor vehicles must be designed, equipped, and built to meet the state's stringent anti-smog standards. GM must warrant your vehicle's emission control system for the periods of time and mileage listed provided there has been no abuse, neglect, or improper maintenance of your vehicle. Your vehicle's emission control system may include parts such as the fuel injection system, ignition system, catalytic converter, and engine computer. Also included are hoses, belts, connectors, and other emission related assemblies.
Where a warrantable condition exists, GM will repair your vehicle at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts, and labor.
California Emission Defect and Emission Performance Warranty Coverage
For cars and trucks with light duty or medium duty emissions:
For 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first:
If your vehicle fails a smog check inspection, GM will make all necessary repairs and adjustments to ensure that your vehicle passes the inspection. This is your Emission Control System Performance Warranty.
If any emission related part on your vehicle is defective, GM will repair or replace it. This is your Short-term Emission Defects Warranty.
For 7 years or 70,000 miles whichever comes first:
If an emission related part listed in this booklet specially noted with coverage for 7 years or 70,000 miles is defective, GM will repair or replace it. This is your Long-term Emission Control System Defects Warranty.
For 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first:
If the catalytic converter or vehicle, powertrain, control module is found to be defective, GM will repair or replace it under the Federal Emission Control System Warranty.
For heavy duty gasoline engine vehicles, the emission warranty period is 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
For heavy duty diesel engine vehicles, the emission warranty period is 5 years, 100,000 miles, or 3,000 hours of operation, whichever comes first.
Any authorized GMC dealer will, as necessary under these warranties, replace, repair, or adjust to GM specifications any genuine GM parts that affect emissions.
The applicable warranty period shall begin on the date the vehicle is delivered to the first retail purchaser or, if the vehicle is first placed in service as a demonstrator or company vehicle prior to sale at retail, on the date the vehicle is placed in such service.
Owner's Warranty Responsibilities
As the vehicle owner, you are responsible for the performance of the scheduled maintenance listed in your owner manual. GM recommends that you retain all maintenance receipts for your vehicle, but GM cannot deny warranty coverage solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance.
You are responsible for presenting your vehicle to a GM dealer selling your vehicle line as soon as a problem exists. The warranted repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.
As the vehicle owner, you should also be aware that GM may deny warranty coverage if your vehicle or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper or insufficient maintenance, or modifications not approved by GM.
If you have any questions regarding your rights and responsibilities under these warranties, you should contact the Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-462-8782 or, in California, write to:

Parts specified in your maintenance schedule as requiring scheduled replacement are covered up to their first replacement interval or the applicable emission warranty coverage period, whichever comes first. If failure of one of these parts results in failure of another part, both will be covered under the Emission Control System Warranty.
For detailed information concerning specific parts covered by these emission control systems warranties, ask your dealer.
Replacement Parts
The emission control systems of your vehicle were designed, built, and tested using genuine GM parts* and the vehicle is certified as being in conformity with applicable federal and California emission requirements. Accordingly, it is recommended that any replacement parts used for maintenance or for the repair of emission control systems be new, genuine GM parts.
The warranty obligations are not dependent upon the use of any particular brand of replacement parts. The owner may elect to use non-genuine GM parts for replacement purposes. Use of replacement parts which are not of equivalent quality may impair the effectiveness of emission control systems.
If other than new, genuine GM parts are used for maintenance replacements or for the repair of parts affecting emission control, the owner should assure himself/herself that such parts are warranted by their manufacturer to be equivalent to genuine GM parts in performance and durability.
* "Genuine GM parts," when used in connection with GM vehicles means parts manufactured by or for GM, designed for use on GM vehicles, and distributed by any division or subsidiary of GM.
Maintenance and Repairs
Maintenance and repairs can be performed by any qualified service outlet; however, warranty repairs must be performed by an authorized dealer except in an emergency situation when a warranted part or a warranty station is not reasonably available to the vehicle owner.
In an emergency, where an authorized dealer is not reasonably available, repairs may be performed at any available service establishment or by the owner, using any replacement part. GMC will consider reimbursement for the expense incurred, including diagnosis, not to exceed the manufacturer's suggested retail price for all warranted parts replaced and labor charges based on GMC's recommended time allowance for the warranty repair and the geographically appropriate labor rate. A part not being available within 10 days or a repair not being completed within 30 days constitutes an emergency. Retain receipts and failed parts in order to receive compensation for warranty repairs reimbursable due to an emergency.
If, in an emergency situation, it is necessary to have repairs performed by other than a GMC dealer and you believe the repairs are covered by emission warranties, take the replaced parts and your receipt to a GMC dealer for reimbursement consideration. This applies to both the Federal Emission Defect Warranty and Federal Emission Performance Warranty.
Receipts and records covering the performance of regular maintenance or emergency repairs should be retained in the event questions arise concerning maintenance. These receipts and records should be transferred to each subsequent owner. GM will not deny warranty coverage solely on the absence of maintenance records. However, GM may deny a warranty claim if a failure to perform scheduled maintenance resulted in the failure of a warranty part.
Claims Procedure
As with the other warranties covered in this booklet, take your vehicle to any authorized GMC dealer facility to obtain service under the emission warranty. This should be done as soon as possible after failing an EPA-approved I/M test or a California smog check test, or at any time you suspect a defect in a part.
Those repairs qualifying under the warranty will be performed by any GMC dealer at no charge. Repairs which do not qualify will be charged to you. You will be notified as to whether or not the repair qualifies under the warranty within a reasonable time, not to exceed 30 days after receipt of the vehicle by the dealer, or within the time period required by local or state law.
The only exceptions would be if you request or agree to an extension, or if a delay results from events beyond the control of your dealer or GM. If you are not so notified, GM will provide any required repairs at no charge.
In the event a warranty matter is not handled to your satisfaction, refer to the "Customer Satisfaction Procedure" under Owner Assistance .

Sid, can you explain why this section in listed if all the items are warrantied 100K ?I went back and posted the entire document which should better explain it. Basically there are different coverages for light, med and heavy duty vehicles.
Is this part that the dealer says is a Neutral Safety Switch the same as a Neutral Safety Backup Switch and a Transmission Gear Selector Switch??It's all the same thing.
Frank Blum 01-17-2005, 09:49 PM Thanks Sid. Later! Frank

burntb4 01-18-2005, 12:10 PM In the above post I am referring to the NSBU
Max Power 01-18-2005, 12:14 PM Do you have the warranty supplement that comes with the truck? In there it states that it is covered under emission warranty but ONLY on the Duramax.

stotts 01-18-2005, 12:35 PM burntb4,
I could give some dealers in Idaho but that might not help you much. I did just talk with my local dealer service dept mgr and he said it is very easy to find. He had to use it yesterday to replace one on a truck with 41,000 miles. He said if the dealership looks up the Labor Operation for the Park Neutral Switch it clearly states it is a covered item under the Emissions Warranty. Hope this helps. If you do want the dealer name/number let me know.
burntb4 01-18-2005, 01:23 PM Hi guys,
I am having a hell of a time convincing GM here in Ontario that this is a warranty issue. Now they are challenging my "INTERNET INFO" to the point that they WILL NOT DO FURTHER FOLLOW-UP unless I can give them more info. These ba----ds are really p----n me off! It's just astounding how we have to SQUEEZE them so much over these issues related to such an expensive vehicle.
The Customer Service Rep is asking for the GM rep name, the dealer name, the name of the person the info was given to(meaning you) , the vin# of the vehicle in question and the date of any warranty work performed.
I mentioned one post as being from Stotts ,a GM customer in Rigby Idaho and they as much as LAUGHED at me saying the US has NOTHING to do with our warranty issues in Canada????
Would any of you be kind enough to PM me with some pertinent details I can toss to them or post this info. ESPECIALLY ANY CANADIANS!!
ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
stotts 01-18-2005, 01:48 PM I got my 2002 second hand, originally it was a Canadian truck. When I called customer service and gave them the VIN they were able to tell it was made for Canada and gave me the coverage info in km's rather than miles so I would guess it applies to both Canada and US trucks.
Did you call your dealer service dept and have them look up the Labor Operations for
the Park Neutral Switch and see what it said?
burntb4 01-18-2005, 02:26 PM Just got off the phone to another dealer in Burlington Ont and he says IT IS DEFINATELY NOT COVERED.
Sure seems to be a lot of confusion on this one.ANYBODY out there from ONTARIO that has had it done under warranty???
Max Power 01-18-2005, 02:47 PM You could ask them to read you their information on what is covered under the Emissions warranty. I know it is covered on my 04 maybe 02 is different.
I can scan the page that says it is covered on my 04 if you want.
burntb4 01-18-2005, 02:50 PM Thanks Max-that would be great if you could get that off to me ASAP.Appreciate the help bud
Max Power 01-18-2005, 03:04 PM .
burntb4 01-18-2005, 10:57 PM Got tired of fighting with the a------s.Went to Allison dealer and got the part for CDN$91.00 and had an ex boyfriend of the daughter who runs a Tranny shop do work.Removed/replace with the tan colored NSBU and reset the codes in about 15 min. at N/C.Wil be buyin him lunch soon fer sure.
Thanks for the help/suggestions from all.
burntb4 01-18-2005, 11:05 PM P.S to my last post:
First dealer told me $cdn315.00 for part #29540479 and installation.Second dealer, when I told him I could get the part for $91.00 and wanted a quote to install told me the part # was different for the one I needed because it was old and I needed the newer version for $365.00 part and installation.Allison guy sold me the TAN COLOR one for the $91.00.
I never would have thought that these dealers could be so sleezy toward customers that spend Duramax prices at their place of business.
Burntb4. Been there done that. In Canada the supreme court ruling in 2002 about an injector issue on a GM duramax that some one in Ont. tried to get repaired with an engine replacement included went to the manufacturer. Since then GM has been very snooty to lawyers letters (according to my law firm) and it is a waste of time and money to try any thing through customer service. My opinion is, take your warranty book from dealer to dealer till you find one that can read.
blizzardplowman 01-25-2005, 08:52 PM Got my switch replacement refunded today, replacement was done in Feb 04- thanks to everyone for their good work.:ro)

jasper2222 01-28-2005, 10:13 PM I hate to even ask, but what is the NSBU switch. I was reading the post on odometer needle being pegged and transferred over to this post. Does the NSBU switch have anything to do with the odometer?
Titanium 01-29-2005, 03:14 PM I hate to even ask, but what is the NSBU switch. I was reading the post on odometer needle being pegged and transferred over to this post. Does the NSBU switch have anything to do with the odometer?
No it has to do with the gear selection screen on the dash and the tranny acting up!

Wow....I found my supplement. Lots of good info on Emission Warrenty
Parts starting on page 23... and ending page 29
However, in the listing of parts I admit to some dyslexia but I cannot fine the NSBU or Park/Neutral Position Switch (PNP) in covered items.
Max Power 03-19-2005, 12:52 PM In the 04 book it is called transmission gear selecter switch.
duramaxdiesel 03-19-2005, 02:53 PM They also say that pulleys are covered. Does this include the belt tensioner?
56Nomad 03-19-2005, 05:06 PM In the 04 book it is called transmission gear selecter switch.
Thanks Max Power. In my 02 Warrenty Book it is called the same.
Interesting.... it has several names.
Park/Neutral Position Switch (PNP)
transmission gear selecter switch (TGS)
Neutral Safety Back Up Switch (NSBU)
In some circles, also called the TMB (thing-a-ma-bob) :exactly:

NSBU = Neutral Safety Back Up switch.
dollyo11 03-21-2005, 03:12 PM Just got off from the phone with GM on this switch. Mine was replaced Jan/04 part was 159.86 with 80.00 diag fee. Gave the man the part # 29540479, he said this was a E-Code part was covered in Cal. for 3 yr 50,000 mi. Fed part is clear to be 5yr 100k, In cal don't know if they consider this a heavy duty diesel engine vehicle or not , if so it is 5yr 100k also.. asked him why then they did not do warranty as I only had 41k on it at that time??? I installed this switch myself now he says that may be a problem ?? told him they didn't honor warranty so they were the first to default as it were. Calling dealer today see what he says// By the way asked him what the letters that spelled Transmission Gear Selection Switch (Diesel) Meant and where it was located on my truck/ said it was a switch like the nsbu on the alli-- I told him there was only one there that I knew of???

Slapshot 04-13-2005, 06:23 PM My wife called me at work saying my '03 had the check engine light on and the shift display was all wonky. I call my stealer and they had time to look at it right away. They grabbed the codes and determined that the Neutral Safety switch needed replacing ($280 CND). The service manager called me at work to let me know and to get my approval for the repairs, I said ok. I then came here and did a search for 'Neutral Safety switch' and came accross this thread. Warranty eh?
So I called him back and asked him to check into it. Guess what, GM covered the whole thing.
Gawd I love this place. Between my Duramax and 6.5, I bet I have saved $3000 between warranty and DIY projects.
How do I donate to make sure it stays here, just as it is?
Thanks guys!

pepperidge 04-13-2005, 11:07 PM They also say that pulleys are covered. Does this include the belt tensioner?
What he said... I replaced mine a long time ago...
NWDmax 04-13-2005, 11:08 PM Ditto to above mines a squeaking off and on!
