Michelin North America, Inc. has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it is recalling approximately 4,000 Michelin XDE M/S commercial truck tires.

Certain Michelin XDE M/S commercial truck tires can experience rapid air loss due to an irregularity of the inner liner. Rapid air loss can result in loss of vehicle control and a vehicle crash can occur.

All of the affected tires were produced in weeks 21 through 43 of last year (May - October 2004) and begin with DOT marking HJ and end with 2104 through 4304.

The DOT codes are found on the sidewall of the tire just above the wheel rim, printed in small type. There are not issues with tires produced outside of these DOT weeks.

The following Michelin tires are involved:

MSPN Tire Description GM Part Number
87904 10R22.5 Michelin XDE M/S Load Range F 9595017
87357 10R22.5 Michelin XDE M/S Load Range G 9595020

Potentially involved are certain 2004-2005 model year Chevrolet and GMC medium duty trucks as our records indicate that 154 were built with these tires.

Michelin will contact customers directly to arrange inspection and if necessary, replacement of the tires. If you have any questions about this recall, please contact Michelin at 866-847-8475.

I like the way they say "rapid air loss". Reminds me of "thermal events".:D
