thedon01 02-03-2008, 04:55 PM I travel alot and the stock lights suck!!! Has anyone replaced there lights with HID or even silver star bulbs??? I need brighter lights and some nice fogs installed!
Let me know what you have done and how it worked out!

Unit453 02-03-2008, 04:59 PM I do believe VolvoSpeed does. Might want to pm him.
Volvospeed 02-03-2008, 05:07 PM Yeah since I get banned every time I make a post about them. Apparently even though no one on this board sells them, you are still supposed to contact them if you want a set.

But when you do thats what they look like

Soundsgreat 02-03-2008, 09:23 PM I have the same HID upgrade kit, its awesome! Made driving at night sooo much better but I'm still wanting to add some fog and driving lights, prob pick up that Monroe light bar unless I can find something better.
thedon01 02-03-2008, 10:31 PM Looks good so who makes them and have you had any problems with them burning the wires from the load??? If you can post or PM me where you bought them and waht model if you have it! I need some before I hit the road for the long haul the stock ones are pretty bad!

HIDs draw less wattage and amps than Halogens. Had the set up a year and no problems as there should not be. The kit is made by phillips which is OEM for loads of makes. As for Soundsgreat 's kit they no longer can get them and I use another source. The stupid banning of HID sales in the states has slowed a lot of companies down over the last 5 years.
burbanman 02-04-2008, 12:19 PM can someone PM me where to purchase these also?
Thank you
zeitgeist57 02-04-2008, 12:35 PM Me too, please!
Volvospeed 02-04-2008, 01:58 PM I know cost is 850-1000 when you can find them. If you want I will run down a shop with them in stock. Other wise they are 850 + shipping from over seas. Shipping is usually ~100 insured.
ZX12R 02-04-2008, 02:50 PM Why are they banned, they are factory options on many cars.
Volvospeed 02-04-2008, 03:05 PM I wanna say ~5 years ago all after market sales of HIDs became illegal in the US. It may have been even longer ago but I remember the good ol days when every speed shop on earth sold HIDs. Now its all Ebayers for the most part.

for just the hid's?
i did a set on my 68 c-10 w/ conversion headlights from APC and a set of hid's out of a maxima, but you can get a direct fit set for somewhere around $150 bucks. and the conversion light housings are about $50 a pair. looks like they are just 4x6 lights.
FlipinPips 02-04-2008, 04:18 PM Anyone who knows where to buy let me know, these stocks Headlights are just dangerous!

Will they pass a DOT inspection?
mpriceduramax 02-04-2008, 06:14 PM check out a site called (link removed) they have some pretty kick ass set ups for a really reasonable price
Staff edit; Link removed.
1lowdiesel 02-04-2008, 06:27 PM Will they pass a DOT inspection?
yea they are dot approved, depending on the company you go with they have them in glass or plastic lenses. the ones i did were glass
wait till tomorrow and i will get some part numbers
mpriceduramax that is a great site but that link will get removed shortly.
Unit453 02-04-2008, 06:30 PM No links gents unless its a supporting site sponsor. Pm the link if you have to, thanks.

you would just have to angle them down a bit.
1lowdiesel 02-05-2008, 10:04 AM ok i can get the headlights there are 3 different styles
pn#'s
WI-HL6A --- $50 pr
WI-HL2 --- $26 pr
WI-HL12--- $71 pr
all have glass lenses
pm me w/ any questions
Volvospeed 02-05-2008, 10:18 AM Those are only DOT approved until you slap a HID in them. Was thinking more like this:
http://mdt.volvospeed.com/images/reviews/hid_xenon.jpg
1lowdiesel 02-05-2008, 10:22 AM nice kit, but i can see those being very expensive.
Soundsgreat 02-05-2008, 11:05 AM Pm sent out with the links, I just the supplier and they have the low beam only projector upgrade as seen in Volospeeds pics for $429 or the entire kit with the high beam upgrade for $849. You can pick up a sealed beam conversion housing for the high beam at a local auto part store for a few $$ so the low beam only would be a great way to upgrade and save money. If anyone else needs the supplier's info PM or email me, I'd be more the happy to share that info.
Volvospeed 02-05-2008, 11:37 AM nice kit, but i can see those being very expensive.
Yes but they are DOT approved. I know lots of guys who failed DOT inspection because of retrofit HIDs. Between weight stations, dot inspections and everything else personally I would not risk it on a MDT.
1lowdiesel 02-05-2008, 12:05 PM humor me here, but why are those dot approved? is it because of the kelvin rating?
Soundsgreat 02-05-2008, 12:19 PM They are DOT aproved because they housing/reflectors are designed to work with a bulb ballast light source and not a bulb filament set up like current OE housing are.
thedon01 02-05-2008, 12:22 PM Soundsgreat what projector headlights do you have??? Any pics I am thinking of just replacing the bulbs with silver star until I can buy the HID
1lowdiesel 02-05-2008, 12:28 PM oh so having them in a projector design makes them legal? what about all the cars that come w/ hids they don't have projectors, matter of fact there was just a cust in here w/a toyota prius that had them from the factory and they just had that small reflector in the headlight. just thinking out loud
Volvospeed 02-05-2008, 03:46 PM The biggest reason they are DOT is because someone paid the money, submitted the paper work, and jumped through hoops to get them approved.
Prius has HIDs? Sense when? What you are talking about sounds like bi-xenon. Volvo did that for a while. Bi-xenon is the worst set up ever. With bi-xenon you end up with no highbeams. If you want to see an example check out the S60R. They were standard with bi-xenon
1lowdiesel 02-05-2008, 04:41 PM nope they were hid's
package 4, 5, 6
http://www.toyota.com/prius-hybrid/options.html
also they do make high/low beam hid's, there is a reflector that moves around the bulb to change the direction of the light making it brighter or dimmer.

if you got hids for your low beams the highs would still work the same way.

Yes, several. Vendors pay to support this site. They are paying the tab to keep this site running free. Links to non site vendors are not. Ebay is a good example. Its competition to those who pay the bills here and we dont allow it. Its a luxury we provide to those that do.
Also, I was under the impression that any retrofit HID is illegal, according to DOT guidelines mainly due to the fact that its a high intensity light in a housing that wasnt designed for such a light.

Almost correct. The kits I use are OEM philips and installed in vehicles from the factory and carry the same bulb specification as the original bulbs. As for just buying H3s you can do that if you buy a sealed beam conversion. If you do that then you can use any H3 or whatever bulb the conversion uses. IE buy your conversion kit and then any H3 bulb, HID or otherwise, that you want.
thedon01 02-06-2008, 11:27 PM Going that route until I have 800$ extra to spend!
bassn_07 02-08-2008, 11:29 PM Could someone please pm info the HID upgrade kit. Thanks.

thedon01 02-16-2008, 01:40 AM Got my Piolit lights today but have no clue how to mount the H3 bulb in there??? Anyone seen these before they are the HL6A I dont know how the lights attaches without falling out! Thats all I need for the DOT man LOL

Did you buy a sealed beam converstion that houses an H3 bulb? If so it should be a straight forward install of the bulb using the provided spring clip if I'm not mistaken. Worst case snap some pics and post them up so we can look at it to get a better idea.
thedon01 02-16-2008, 08:47 PM I will get some pics now! Maybe the little wire on there is the spring you are talking about! Let me know

Tired Old Man 02-17-2008, 12:42 AM So is the H3 bulb a replacement for the stock headlight??? I have to get some bulbs at least for now night driving is bad!!!
When I measured the voltage w/engine running @ 1200 RPM it was 10.5 volts @ the bulb
Go Figure , upgrade the wire and install a set of Silverstars and viola nite and day difference. Now I have 13.9 @ bulb
Volvospeed 02-17-2008, 01:17 AM If the hand brake was on you were running on the DRLs. DRLs ouuutput 9-10 volts where as the headlights should be at 14. Thats wire you wire an inline diode when you install HIDs. Underpowering the ballasts will burn them out in a hurry. The other option is pull the DRL fuse/

Volvospeed 02-18-2008, 01:36 AM That looks like an H7 socket to me.
Soundsgreat 02-18-2008, 10:34 AM I'm thinking the same thing, looks like an H7 with that spring clip. Ironicly I have a Catz HID system that is for an H7 I'm looking to sell off if your interested PM me.
thedon01 02-18-2008, 06:30 PM it ended up being the 9003 bulb that was a direct plug in and looks great! I put in silver stars for now until I can buy some HID

thedon01 02-18-2008, 10:36 PM Volvo any iea why my high beam would be trying to come on while I have the lights on??? It is just barley on
thedon01 02-18-2008, 10:37 PM Also anyone know how to disconnect the day time lights from the ebrake?
Volvospeed 02-19-2008, 01:14 AM Just disable DRL:
http://mdt.volvospeed.com/mods/gmc_drl.html
As for the headlight being on your feeding back the harness. IF you look at the lights you went from a three prong harness to a 2 pole harness. Look at the schematic below and install the diodes where I show them and you will be fine.

thedon01 02-19-2008, 10:17 PM Problem is I dont know what a diode is??? the lights I installed had three pronges the same as what I took out should I have bought ones with 2 pronges instead???
thedon01 02-20-2008, 06:51 PM still looking for the answer to what a diode is??? Sorry guys not the smartest when it comes to car stuff LOL
Soundsgreat 02-20-2008, 07:19 PM diode goes in line to block voltage from passing, there are different types with different ratings, ie current, voltage etc. But they are usually a black cylinder that has a silver strip on it with silver prongs at each end almost like squwers. If I can find one laying around here in my parts bin I'll shoot a pic. You can also google Diode.
thedon01 02-20-2008, 11:15 PM ok so where would I install this? I am sure I can find one here in town tomorrow or does each wire need one
Soundsgreat 02-21-2008, 08:32 AM ok so where would I install this? I am sure I can find one here in town tomorrow or does each wire need one
It would go in-line between the harness and the High beam wire so that it blocks the voltage from feeding thru to the high beam.
