I travel alot and the stock lights suck!!! Has anyone replaced there lights with HID or even silver star bulbs??? I need brighter lights and some nice fogs installed!

I have the same HID upgrade kit, its awesome! Made driving at night sooo much better but I'm still wanting to add some fog and driving lights, prob pick up that Monroe light bar unless I can find something better.

HIDs draw less wattage and amps than Halogens. Had the set up a year and no problems as there should not be. The kit is made by phillips which is OEM for loads of makes. As for Soundsgreat 's kit they no longer can get them and I use another source. The stupid banning of HID sales in the states has slowed a lot of companies down over the last 5 years.

You can pick up a sealed beam conversion housing for the high beam at a local auto part store for a few $$ so the low beam only would be a great way to upgrade and save money. If anyone else needs the supplier's info PM or email me, I'd be more the happy to share that info.

Yes but they are DOT approved. I know lots of guys who failed DOT inspection because of retrofit HIDs. Between weight stations, dot inspections and everything else personally I would not risk it on a MDT.

humor me here, but why are those dot approved? is it because of the kelvin rating?

They are DOT aproved because they housing/reflectors are designed to work with a bulb ballast light source and not a bulb filament set up like current OE housing are.

oh so having them in a projector design makes them legal? what about all the cars that come w/ hids they don't have projectors, matter of fact there was just a cust in here w/a toyota prius that had them from the factory and they just had that small reflector in the headlight. just thinking out loud

The biggest reason they are DOT is because someone paid the money, submitted the paper work, and jumped through hoops to get them approved.

Prius has HIDs? Sense when? What you are talking about sounds like bi-xenon. Volvo did that for a while. Bi-xenon is the worst set up ever. With bi-xenon you end up with no highbeams. If you want to see an example check out the S60R. They were standard with bi-xenon

if you got hids for your low beams the highs would still work the same way.

Almost correct. The kits I use are OEM philips and installed in vehicles from the factory and carry the same bulb specification as the original bulbs. As for just buying H3s you can do that if you buy a sealed beam conversion. If you do that then you can use any H3 or whatever bulb the conversion uses. IE buy your conversion kit and then any H3 bulb, HID or otherwise, that you want.

Going that route until I have 800$ extra to spend!

Did you buy a sealed beam converstion that houses an H3 bulb? If so it should be a straight forward install of the bulb using the provided spring clip if I'm not mistaken. Worst case snap some pics and post them up so we can look at it to get a better idea.

I will get some pics now! Maybe the little wire on there is the spring you are talking about! Let me know

When I measured the voltage w/engine running @ 1200 RPM it was 10.5 volts @ the bulb
Go Figure , upgrade the wire and install a set of Silverstars and viola nite and day difference. Now I have 13.9 @ bulb

If the hand brake was on you were running on the DRLs. DRLs ouuutput 9-10 volts where as the headlights should be at 14. Thats wire you wire an inline diode when you install HIDs. Underpowering the ballasts will burn them out in a hurry. The other option is pull the DRL fuse/

That looks like an H7 socket to me.

I'm thinking the same thing, looks like an H7 with that spring clip. Ironicly I have a Catz HID system that is for an H7 I'm looking to sell off if your interested PM me.

Head light switch on, headlights on high beam both bulbs lit or on low beam one bulb lit measured betwen black ground on.

I bought 9003 bulbs with 3 prongs and they plugged right in! Looks like I am getting feedback when the headlights are on to the high beam

these bulbs are just silver star bulbs no HID yet

Problem is I dont know what a diode is??? the lights I installed had three pronges the same as what I took out should I have bought ones with 2 pronges instead???

diode goes in line to block voltage from passing, there are different types with different ratings, ie current, voltage etc. But they are usually a black cylinder that has a silver strip on it with silver prongs at each end almost like squwers. If I can find one laying around here in my parts bin I'll shoot a pic. You can also google Diode.

It would go in-line between the harness and the High beam wire so that it blocks the voltage from feeding thru to the high beam.

I have a question all of the HID kits I see are the plug type my headlights and I am sure all others have the type the prongs plug into is there a way to convert this or does it have to be cut and spliced???

I replaced my bulbs with silverstars and it looks ok but HID is the only way to go!

Changed out the lights today with an HID kit I got through a friend in Japan comes with the H4 bulb and has a special plug to adapt to the GM harness well pluged in all in and we have lights very bright ones at that 10K No feedback to the high beams either BUT I cant click on the high beams or the HID lights flicker!

The kit was only 228$ shipped so not bad from what I have heard of others paying! We will see how long they last!

Are you saying you cannot run the high beams??? When are you getting the flicker... I'm not clear on that.

Yep no high beams when I flip the switch the high beams come on but the HID lights I installed are flickering like crazy! Any ideas?
