Less power? Naw who wants that... You can't get yours to lock up anymore, or is it worse than that, making noises?

That takes some work to toast a 14 bolt G80. Can I ask how you managed that?

let me see... when i drive in reverse i get a bind (you can feel it) then a clunk either stopping it with the brakes or starting to move in reverse.

Mild throttle application on snow.... under 20 mph... one wheel only.

I believe it died this summer while pulling/ dragracing.

No lockup in reverse either

Peg Leg.

I might need a new one, maybe an old takeoff will work Eric.

Or if anyone has a spare TorSen... that would be the shiznit in 5:1 APP Ratio

JB Weld and Duct Tape?

Juice, are you seriously on a mission to find the limits of EVERY part on these trucks?

No; PEBSWAT error (Problem Exists Between Steering Wheel And Truck)

I thought the G-80 was tough?

What gives?

Sheesh.. at least we know the G-80 is 5 times more durable than the turbo):h

Have you ever owned a 10 bolt g80? I have grenaded 2 on my 90 and a friend blew one up on a 95 tahoe. I was told to put a 14 bolt with the g80 under there because they were "indestructable". Good luck with that one...

They make an E-locker that will fit our rear end? I might just go get me one, the locker on the rear is sorta dangerous considering the ice around here. One's slipping, they lock up, now both are slipping and I'm doing a doughnut.

Any news here? I just pulled the cover on my diff for an inspection. The ring/pinion and spider gears are huge and pretty tough. No excessive wear or chipping/breakage. You would have to try pretty hard to trash those.

The locking mechanism gear and cams however have damage on mine. Broken teeth mainly. I need a solution for the future because I think it will eventually grenade under the stress that racing puts on it.

Anyone have an aftermarket solution or is it R&R the G80?

I've toasted a g80 in a 14bolt. Gov-lock are crap by there design. They allow wheelspin, once the carrier is spinning fast enough to throw the weight outward it locks the gears. The shock load tends to break everything. I'd replace it with an open carrier and install a detroit locker.

The G80 is a great on-road locking axle with mild manners giving you the infrequent lock up you need to get out of mud holes and keep moving in the snow. BUT the locking mechanisim is not nearly as heavy duty as the rest of the mechanicals. On road, high torque slipping will burn out the clutches fairly fast.

As the clutches wear, they change the meshing of the spider gears which eventually destroys the spiders, and the carrier. I've killed two now myself. If you catch them early on, they can be rebuilt, but if you are killing the axle that fast you will want to consider a different carrier ala detroit locker.

Zexel-Torsen would be my first choice.... I wonder if they have one for this application

doughnuts are GOOD, ask any cop ):h

I didn't think they had a detroit to fit our trucks.

Everything out there is setup for the 14 bolt 10.5 ring gear. Can you convert our 11.5 setup to the 10.5 or do you need a new axle/case?

There is NAFT for the 11.5 application that I can find. Way to go GM. Censored

My bad. I thought they still had the 14 bolt. Sorry.

I found this in the factory service manual.

"The locking differential design was modified in mid-1986 to include a load limiting feature to reduce the chance of breaking an axle shaft under abusive driving conditions. The number of tangs on the energizing disk in the left hand clutch pack was reduced allowing these tangs to shear in the event of a high torque engagement of the differential locking mechanism. At the time of failure of the load limiting disc, there will be a loud bang in the rear axle and the differential will operate as a standard differential with some limited-slip action of the clutch packs at low torques. The service procedure, when the disc tangs shear, involves replacing the left hand clutch plates and the wave spring. It is also necessary to examine the axle shafts for twisting because at high torques it is possible to not only shear the load limiting disc, but to also twist the axle shafts."

I may be looking for one for my truck, mine did not come with the G80.
I have never had an open rear before, and do not like using 4x4 so much.
Thanks
