At what temp should i start to let of on the throttle. i have only had it up to 1,400 degrees. I have read of people letting it get higher, but wanted to know what the highest is i should let it get to before i need to let off. Thanks!:D

I can't believe it will go past 1400°F with just a predator set at 85 Hp when you have a 4" exhaust and an aftermarket air intake. I wouldn't want to go past that temp, there have been reports of stress cracks on the turbine housings of the IHI turbo because of moon shots with the egt's.

You can easily get to and past 1400 with a pred 85. I've seen 1703.

Sorry no help with a safe temp. My SPA starts to flash at 1350 (I think thats what I set it at?) I have yet to back out of it until I got to where I was going. But I do think about it with that light flashing in the corner of my eye.

With the big VA I have run mine up to what looks to be 1800+*. Hard to tell for sure since the Autometer only reads up to 1600.

I should have of gave more info(i should have of known better by now) i leave mine set at 40 hp when pulling 15k fith wheeler and it has hit 1400 going up hill. I take that 1400 should be the max i should let it get too. so thats what i will do. Thanks again for all the help and info. :ro)

I can't believe these Dmaxs run that hot. That has me a bit worried. I should be getting my new 05 cc sb GMC SLT shortly. I pull my 30' 5er, and 20' Sea Ray down the road with my Cummins (modified with Banks, 4" Exhaust,DTT 91% TC & VB) and never have I reached 1300 degrees pulling grade in 108 degree weather. and I am 20k totally loaded.

Whats up with the HIGH egts?

Good thing I am hanging on to my CTD!

At sea level, the worst I have seen is slightly over 1000 degress, but as I get over 5000', boost falls off and EGT goes up to 1300 (or more if I am not watching). This is on long pulls, not short bursts.
Because each piston crown is cooled by oil sprayed from a jet in the main oil gallery into a cast in "duct" on the underside of the piston, the D-Max is probably more tolerant of high EGT's than we realize. None the less, I don't think it a good idea to be towing heavy loads (even stock) without a pre turbo EGT. Sometimes too much information is a bad thing, but not here.

Sea Wizard,

I think when they are talking 1800+ EGT's, that is only for short bursts (1/4 mile) with a really big tune in their truck (Big 200+VA, Xtreme or a stack).

Good thing I am hanging on to my CTD! I think the big VA hitting 1800 deg. must be on a hard short run, as in my experience it is a cool running box. The Predator on the other hand just runs hot. I tow the same amount of weight with my cummins as I do with my Dmax and the Dmax actually runs cooler. Pretty much the same HP in both trucks also.

A safe level for Towing is 1250* pre turbo. Short periods of time up to 1300* are OK as I have seen that on stock trucks towing heavy loads within the trucks limits. When we do testing we run at max GVW for truck and trailer. Our testing goes from sea level to 5000' with outside temperatures ranging from 50* to 110*

Now when it comes to racing all bets are off, the limit is how big your wallet is willing to be lightened by. I have seen some boxes we have tested over 2000* and not make the power we do at cooler temperatures.

holy sh** I feel a lot better about hitting 1350 when pulling now

I hit 1350 all the time with the edge on level 3 and 4 unloaded. Of course that is with a little lead on the peddle. I don't run 4 anymore since the edge backs off when EGT's hit the set limit (1350 deg) so level 4 doesn't feel any more powerful than level 3. I'd say hitting 1350 while towing would be very common.

Let off the throttle??? :D

When towing I try to keep it under 1300 when pulling a big hill/mountain. If I'm in a hurry, accelerating from a stop I hit 1300-1500 for a bit until I'm in 5th and up to speed which isn't very long. If I'm pulling a hill with the cruise on and a Dodge or Ford comes up in left lane I wait till they're right next to me. Then I put it to the wood and leave them behind not letting off till I'm at the top of the hill or they're far enough behind.

According to the IHI engineer I talked to the turbo is designed for continuous operation at 1472 degrees. I'm not sure about the pistons, valves, ect. but I haven't burned this thing up yet after 100K towing, dragracing & truckpulling.
