GM Recalls Over 98,000 Trucks for Steering, Braking Problems
Tuesday, January 11, 2005
DETROIT — General Motors Corp. (GM) is recalling more than
98,000 pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles because of a
potential problem with their power steering and braking systems,
federal safety regulators said on Tuesday.
An advisory on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration said the problem — which can
hamper but not eliminate the ability to stop or steer the
vehicles — stems from fractures in their hydraulic pump
driveshafts.
Vehicles affected by the recall are from the 2000 model year
and include Chevrolet C/K and Silverado pickups and Suburban
SUVs. GMC Savana vans are also affected, along with GMC
Sierra pickups and Yukon XL SUVs.
GM was hit with numerous vehicle safety recalls last year
and Tuesday's announcement, another blow to its recent
claims of improved quality, came as it was playing host in
Detroit to the North American International Auto Show.

dmaxalliTech 01-11-2005, 08:26 PM Figured that was coming sooner or later.... yippie
Mackin 01-11-2005, 08:30 PM We need details. Chevyhdman's truck just went down and this is what he believes happened to his 02.
Eric did he get a hold of you?
Max Payne 01-11-2005, 09:38 PM Usually Yahoo know about the recalls a month before the Dealers do... It could be a while...
Stupid for them to wait until this. We all knew it was dangerous for years. All about money.
I hope A/C Delco gets a huge lawsuit for leaking batteries since they won't fix that issue.
dmaxalliTech 01-11-2005, 11:13 PM Hey Max..... I cant wait to put pumps on for .7!
ockgator 01-11-2005, 11:39 PM .7 warranty time??? That's the main reason I went indy in '94. If you've been in this long enough you'll remember the warranty issues in the 80's. I made peanuts those years. Only thing I miss from dealer is working on mainly 1 brand and brand specific training
Max Payne 01-12-2005, 11:59 AM I bet that we will get a "shaft" only, and have to replace only the "shaft", and be "shafted" with a rewarding time of .7! I notice that it says year 2000 only, I wonder if they will go in stages like the rack and pinion bearing recalls? I know that Y2K isn't the only years they fail, heck, I was doing a 2002 pump yesterday when my dispacher showed me the Yahoo news.Hey Max..... I cant wait to put pumps on for .7!
DuckhunterInTN 01-12-2005, 01:09 PM What exactly is it replacing? just the steering shaft?
My 2000 Silvy just started leaking fluid from the steering box, gets hard to steer sometimes, and makes a weird creaking noise, kinda like brakes squealing...
dmaxalliTech 01-12-2005, 02:58 PM Thank goodness I am not a suspension tech!
Max Payne 01-12-2005, 04:04 PM Times like this I wish I wasn't a tech at all...
patrick 01-22-2005, 06:56 PM oh yes I remember the steering pinion bearing. How about the tool supplied on the first go round. How many did your dealer brake. how many bearings got stuck in the housing?
I am truly sorry to see you guys get hit again. GM is missing the boat alot. I am very supprised we dont see more recalls. we all know the issues. there is more that coud be recalled that is not.
Max Payne 01-22-2005, 07:05 PM I personally broke that tool at least 5 times, not to mention the rest of the guys breaking it. Kent Moore said it was OUR fault. Yeah... Right....Censored
patrick 01-23-2005, 01:19 PM I called kent moore and spoke with the guy who was in charge of the tech departmrnt. He said we where not doing the recall as discribed in the si service book.
I listed the steps we used. he said to do this and that. so the dealer paid for 3 more tools. we started to do as requseted and the tool still broke.
Then the tool got changed and redesigned. never had a proble using the new one.
Max Payne 01-23-2005, 05:38 PM You and I probably talked to the same guy, I bet his azzhole still hurts after I got off the phone with him...
KansasBill 02-10-2005, 02:47 PM Also note a new recall:
"...that may suffer hydraulic fluid leaks, causing increased steering and braking effort
and potential crashes.
Vehicles affected, all from the 2004-2005 model years, include the Avalanche, Express,
Kodiak, Silverado and Suburban from GM's Chevrolet division. GMC's Savana, Sierra,
Topkick, Yukon XL and the Hummer H2 were also affected"
