: whistling inside cab
duramax_kid21 01-11-2005, 06:45 PM this is my first post so bear with me. i get this whistling noise when the turbo builds to about 15-19 psi. it gets louder if i get into a little more but after it passes like 20 psi it stops. it doesnt make this noise at idle or below about 15 psi. i checked my boost gauge to make sure it wasnt leaking so i dont think its that. any ideas? thanks for the help
B_Alaska 01-11-2005, 07:50 PM When I first got my truck I noticed the same thing. The turbo whine was almost unbearable going 65+mph empty. Towing my boat, I have to bear with the high pitch whine the whole time from the added boost. I have gotten used to it, but maybe my hearing has been slowly going bad from it.
I wish they would have studied the harmonics more. It is very annoying...
duramax_kid21 01-11-2005, 08:26 PM i can hear the turbo whine, this is almost like there is air passing through a small hole somewhere and its making a whistling noise. its like when you have your window down just a bit. drove the truck again and it sounds almost like it inside the dash somewhere. maybe i can spend some more time with it tomorrow.
arguy 01-11-2005, 09:14 PM I'd tell them to quit whistling. The turbo whine is the best part of driving a diesel!! ):h
Jim659 01-11-2005, 10:18 PM Stop whining, that's the turbos job.):h
jbetz 01-12-2005, 06:30 AM I agree, I have an AFE air intake on mine and I love the added whistling of the turbo.
Turfmower 01-12-2005, 09:39 AM God why do Yuppies buy trucks? Next the generation of trucks will be $10,000 more when GM adds the the whine eliminator.

If you go back to a stock air box and AC filter it will quiet the whistle down. You will lose nothing in performance.
dieselfumes57 01-12-2005, 09:54 AM lol@ turf
akdiesel 01-13-2005, 02:48 AM I get a whistling sound also when a song comes on the radio I don't know the words to.):h
gearhead 01-13-2005, 08:14 AM wife sayes mine sounds like a jet airplane ):h :D
Jim659 01-13-2005, 09:19 AM Wifes not allowed in mine.:D
lakingslayer 01-13-2005, 10:23 AM I love the turbo whistle with my LLY. I've pretty much done everyting to make it louder except replace the air filter box.
smokin dmax 01-13-2005, 10:59 AM Man... thats the main reason i got a air intake kit.):h

Exactly

duramax_kid21 01-13-2005, 06:19 PM first off i would like to say that i thought this was a pretty cool site. i guess if your not in some kind of inner circle you dont really get any help. i dont think you guys actually understood what i was saying. i guess it might be due to the fact that you all assumed i was a yuppie. i drive commercial trucks everyday at my job, i know what a turbo sounds like when it spools. the noise i am describing is defenitely not the turbo or the radio for that matter.
_nar_ 01-13-2005, 06:34 PM I'm in the inner circle? Wooohoooo.
Maybe it's a leak on the exhaust. Has happened before when aftermarket exhaust is installed. Sometimes it will only leak at certain times with high pressure and sounds like a squeak/tick.
towin43 01-13-2005, 10:21 PM Kid21, my answer was straightforward...not a smarta$$ remark. Since you are sure it is not turbo whistle, not sure what else it could be. High pitch harmonic from something rubbing? Could it be more of a squealing noise like a belt tensioner? Slight exhaust leak?

akdiesel 01-13-2005, 10:30 PM duramax kid21,
We don't mean to be mean. If we don't know the answer to something we poke fun at it.
Turfmower 01-14-2005, 04:41 PM :) Its fun to poke :)
arguy 01-14-2005, 07:30 PM Is the whistle connected to RPM or road speed? If it is RPM it is something on the motor, belt, alternator, water pump or the power steering pump. If it is road speed it is something on the truck. Antenna? Window seal?
My antenna on the roof whistles very loud, sometime I can hear the stock antenna.
I don't know if this helps but it a try........
