: Tire sizes
snowsdog 01-11-2005, 03:48 PM I have read a lot of post about upgraded tire sizes. I was looking at going to 285 from the 245. Is there any rubbing problems? I am looking at the MTR's from Goodyear just for the six months of winter. Will change back to the 245s for the summer and towing my fifth wheel.
I want to be sure I dont need to do some major mods to run those tires?:D
Also looking for some factory rims if anyone near Michigan has a set to sell.
aegis 01-11-2005, 04:12 PM I have 285's on the stock rims on my 05. Very minor rub on the front. Very easy to fix. I also adjusted the torsion bar 5 turns. This gave me approx 1" in the front. The front fender well had minor rub, it can be trimmed or pulled back to eliminate the rub.
NCMIC 01-11-2005, 05:34 PM i found that on the driver's side, the emergency brake cable was pushing the fender well forward a good bit. I punched 2 holes in it, and tie wrapped it back to the 2 holding rings, where the emergency cable was supposed to be. To me it is a manufacturing oversight. If you take care of that, there will be no rubbing.
As for towing goes, with the 285's and towing heavy loads, your stock transmission may not go into 5th gear. It will have trouble. This is according to the Allison Transmission web site. The re-calibration of the speedometer doesn't recalibrate the TCM's for the transmission. You can find it on this link under the speedometer section.

RobertCG68 01-12-2005, 11:54 AM I put 285s on my 04.5 HD 4x4 and did not have any rubbing at all they are close but havent hit yet
fitfarms 01-12-2005, 12:46 PM aegis, was there any problems getting the 285's onto the 6.5" stock rims.
fitfarms 01-12-2005, 12:49 PM snowdog, I put 265 MTR's on my 05 dmax, I love them. I use them for everyday all year driving. Very Very quiet, as quiet as my old stock tires. I have 5500 miles on them and can't even tell any were yet. I am glad I bought them.
HEMIEATER 01-12-2005, 03:34 PM I had 285's no problem with rubbing, I went to 315-75-16's on the stock rims and had to trim and pull back inner fenders and also trim the air dam. I have the torsion bars turned all the way in and a one inch block in the back.
sammy 01-13-2005, 09:30 PM Keep in mind that a 245 will be better suited for winter driving than the same tire in a 285. When driving on the road, you want the extra pounds per inch to cut into the snow & ice, not float on top of it. Off road snow & mud you will of course want the "float" of a wider tire. I run a Michelin 265E all season from April to November, then run a 245E Blizzak for winter with excellent results. It is fun to corner & stop on snow/ice with a true winter tire! I do the same on my car with the same results. I figure that keeping me or the wife out of a fender bender (even a minor one) more than makes up for the winter tires and a set of take-off rims. Check out the tire rack for excellent info on winter tires.
redneck45 01-14-2005, 08:25 AM snowsdog, what is a sent of factory wheels and tires worth to you? I am right down the road in monroe, and got a set of H2's coming, so the stock rims and tires will be taking up garage space.
oteo125 01-14-2005, 10:28 AM i beleive the stock wheel is 6.5 inches. i went with a 265 on a aftermarket 8 inch wheel and i had to cut alot because of rubbing on my 05. a 265 tire is wider on a 8 inch wheel then a 285 on a stock wheel. almost all aftermarket wheels are 8 inch or larger in with.
Bonehead007` 01-14-2005, 10:39 AM I have an 05 and I just put the exact tire you are looking at on it. 285/75/16 Goodyear MTR. I cranked the torsion bars a bit and trimed the front air dam just a bit and it is fine. Go for it.

I sent you a PM about the rims.:ro)
aegis 01-17-2005, 11:08 AM I had no problems with the stock rims and the BFG 285-75-16 T/A KO . With this tire you can run the pressure down to 20lbs and not damage the tire according to mfg.
JRKRACE 01-17-2005, 12:26 PM Oteo, If you have a picture, please post it. I am in the boat as everyone else. I also don't see too many aftermarket rims with a 265 on it...They're all 285s..
snuffysmith 01-24-2005, 04:07 PM here is mine with 285's with aftermarket wheels. -16...had to cut alot off the front bumper

JRKRACE 01-24-2005, 05:18 PM Geeez, I got the same wheel and 285 BFG setup in the garage. It came off my 2002 GMC HD with no problems...The 2004 GMC, however, is a different story...I'll know how much cutting I have to do in the spring..

05ghost 01-24-2005, 08:03 PM Snuffy, Are they the stone crushers? Or xtream alloys? 16x8's? I just put the Nittos on mine as well but thinking of upgrading to the same rim. Didnt have to trim anything though. You had to trim your bumper for those?
JRKRACE 01-24-2005, 08:22 PM Ahaaa...That's who they fit. The wheels look like Eagle 101's. If they are 16 x 8, they have a IIRC,3 5/8 backspacing. That is what will cause the fitment problems as the factory wheels are 4 15/16 backspace. I think I'm gonna need a wheel with 4 1/5 to 5 inch for backspacing.

they are the exterme alloys with a 4 3/4 back space or something like that, i dont remember. i have to run that backspace due to my spindle lift. yes, 16x8's. there wasn't a good selction of 8 lug when i bought them, but now more people are starting to make'um. so, min stick out good also put a 2" rear spacer in the rear. i'll get some pics up in a few days, they are on my camera. i had to trim about 2.5" off the front bumperCensored but i'm going to be getting a front end replacement soon, so i doesnt matter.:p
