OK so this morning i head down to get breakfast and about a mile into the drive i hear a loud pop, and then a clunking noise from under the truck. the fwd still works fine. so when i get home i put the truck up on jack stands and check the drive shaft it all seems good except the transfer case is making a loud clunk now. all the u-joints seem good. and i don't think its the rear-end that seemed tight. my carrier joint also seemed loose i could wiggle it around pretty good. i think that the problem is in the transfer case, the rear output shaft has some up and down play in it, and the noise it makes when you turn it with your hand doesn't sound good. any help would be great thanks.

anybody think this could be a warrenty issue?

if its under warrenty take it in. They will tell you if its under warrenty or not. Might be the rear bearing went out, rare, but it could happen. I can't see the vid right now, at work, but thats my guess.

do you hammer the truck pretty hard...???
lost the tail section out of an el camino that way.... lots of wheel hope tore the bearing to hell and gone and finally crack the tailshaft...

just a possibility

never heard of a trailer causing the problem.

some members (very few) have experienced a bearing failure though. like band said, its not very many though. may be the place to start though. ouput shouldn't have that much slop too it. neither should the carrier.

i replaced the carrier in mine, had about 1/2-3/4 inch of play left to right.... too much. put new carrier in, problem solved.

luck

what bearing are you talking about? my carrier has about 3/4 inch play up down and side to side. but if i put it in nuetral and jack up the back i can turn the drive shaft about three turns and it kinda locks up

OK so its not the transfer case. pulled the diff cover and found that one of the pins for the spider gears came part way out and was hitting the pinion  so i hammered it back in and put a spot weld on it just to hold it in there till i can get it fixed for good. so what do you guys think i should do, get a Detroit locker or just take it to the dealer and see if they'll fix it for me?
