: 4X4 Switch...Mini Rant Pic inside
Hammer 4 01-31-2008, 06:41 PM So, my 2 bulbs for the 4X4 switch burnt out. I pull the switch, with the circuit board, and take it the stealer, thinking / hopeing to just replace the bulbs...NOPE, you have to buy the dam switch for $90.00..:mad:
The circuit board can't be seperated from the switch cuz the the pins for the connectors are soldiered... So in escence, I'm payin $90.00 for 2 bulbs..also 1 of my bulbs for the passenger side heater controls went out, I was told I'd have to buy the complete switch for that too..:mad: I'm not to skilled when it comes to messin with this stuff, so if anyone has a better way to deal with this, I'd really appreciate some help..
GM really stuck it to us on this one..:(

specialagentPK 01-31-2008, 06:44 PM That sucks I have the same problem, didn't realise you need new switches. If you know someone who works with electronics he may be able to replace the lights.
Twistedtrik 01-31-2008, 06:46 PM I have the same problem I will be addressing very soon. Luckily I am very skilled with a soldering iron. Already did all of my steering wheel control lights and my radio lights too. I am going to redo my radio lights with the blue LEDs.

Wanna make a trip to so. cali..? :D
If you wouldn't mind..could you post what, and how you did to replace the 4X4 bulbs, if in fact you can do it..?
Twistedtrik 01-31-2008, 07:02 PM I will when I get there. It may be a week or so though. I was really big into RC cars since 85 and had to learn a steady hand with doing my own stuff.
Reineke 01-31-2008, 07:34 PM Nothing that some time and a solder sucker can't fix... I think you can even get some braid to remove the solder to take it apart. Look at it this way... Give it a whirl, see if you can't fix it, because the way it looks, you may be buying a new one anyway...
Fingers 01-31-2008, 07:39 PM Those are LEDs, not bulbs. Very cheap by the dozen and easy to replace. Radio Shack carries a decent assortment.
Twistedtrik 01-31-2008, 07:40 PM The main bulbs is what's out I believe. Not the range LEDs on the side. My range LEDs are fine, it's the 2 large bulbs that are bad.
TIM Z 01-31-2008, 07:42 PM What about your local salvage yard for a replacement ? It might be easier?

Yup, on mine it's the main bulbs that light up the keys for selecting 2x, 4x low and hi..
btw, I'm really lousy when it comes tpo electrical stuff..:(
Fingers 01-31-2008, 07:46 PM My mistake. You mean the back lights. I would have to see one to tell where you can get it. Probably available through DigiKey.

Use two (2)Radio Shack p/n 272-1154 (1 per pkg), and cut out the back of the assy to allow an Iron to fit (I melt a hole in with an old 240W iron that I use solely for melting stuff). Heat both terminals and wiggle out lamp. Heat the connections from the rear and slide in pre-aligned lamp. Alternately, heat each pin to wick the solder from bridging the joint, and then repeat for the other lamp.
You can also use Radio Shack p/n 272-1092 (2 per pkg), but without the little white base. This is what I use and never have a problem.
Do not unsolder all the pins as the circuit board is two sided and will not unsolder easily, and the heat required will distort every thing.
modified 01-31-2008, 08:37 PM These bipin bulbs worked for the HVAC Manual controller on my 2002.
Not sure about you 4X4 controller on your 03.

mccall, Thank you..i'll head to radio shack tomorrow..:D

Thanks modified..I'll pull out my heater controlers and see if this applies.
Hammer 4 02-01-2008, 05:02 PM I got the bulbs, got the old ones out, but couldn't get the old solder in the circuit board to melt..:o: Like I said, I'm not much good at this stuff, so I guess I'll spring for a new switch.
Also had the bulb in the light switch burn out, that bulb just twist's out, yet GM decided it shouldn't be a "serviceable" item.. $70.00 for the switch.. I'm gonna search for the bulb..

Don't scrap the controller yet. If you don't have Solder-wik, pick up a roll of the braid at radio shack. And while you're out, get a Pin-vise with assorted bits. Lay the solder-wik braid against the solder you want to remove, heat it with the iron until it wicks the solder onto the braid, and then remove the braid while the solder is still liquified. If the hole didn't open doing that step, use a drill bit a little larger than the leads on your new bulb and drill through the remaining solder (the bit will go very easy through soft metals like solder). Insert bulb, heat joint and add solder.
