I'm new to the site and I got to say you guys are a wealth of info. Ive never changed my trany fluid myself but after reading several threads it appears that I can change the fluid without removing the pan. Is this true? How? Also, can I change the screw on trany filter without changing the fluid in the pan?
Thanks
Jim

You only need to pull the plug on the trans pan to drain it.( do not forget to tighten it back up). Spin on filter is just like an engine oil filter. Wrench will be smaller; remove the filter with wrench ( bucket underneath) and replace with new spin-on. Lubricate black rubber seal with any kind of oil or grease handy( very lightly) and tighten as tight as you can with your hand power. I like to take the wrench that I used to remove filter and put 1 turn extra on it ( no more). Hope this helps, by the way welcome to the best damn Place there is.

and if your the type to add fluid to the filter before you put it on(I am) put the magnet on the new filter first then puor in the fluid. unless you are one of those bright kinda people unlike me that has already thought of such things and are already saying no S......

So how do you replace the fluid trapped in the torque converter? I don't want to drill, tap, and plug the converter before the trans is out of warranty. Just dumping the pan only gets half of it out.

Do a search in the DIY forum, I think its titled pan swap or switching to transdyen or something like that? suncoast puts drain plugs in thier converters, man I had no idea how nice that was since I have always delt with the old school stuff. Makes droping the converter much easier......anywho......

How much fluid does the pan hold?

How do you change the fluid in the TC?

I developed a leak in my bypass filter and emptied the pan. It took 9 quarts to fill it back up. I guess it could have emptied the converter some, but probably not much. Have plenty of fluid on hand when you do the job. Regarding the converter, other than drilling and plugging it, you either have to chase the old oil out with the new, or put it on one of those fluid changing machines, which I believe does the same thing. They are supposed to be very effective, but I don't know the cost of having it done.
