My speedo has been on the whack here lately, mainly after I hit higher speeds then it starts " sticking" as I increase the speed. Tonight after I hit 95 mph it stayed there after my next stop it kept traveling up and when I was going 40 mph it was reading 120. Pretty cool to see and got a few jokes out of it. I was able to get it to come back down after getting the RPMs up. I read the DIY on the stepper motor but my concern is that I am not having any issues with my other gauges. Just wanted to get your opinions if you strongly think it is the stepper motor. Thanks for your help.

I am at 86,000 now. I will call and see. I understand that it was up to 70,000. Correct?

After reading the DIY description, I decided I would fix it myself. My 7 new stepper motors just came in the mail today (eBay, $70, from mandigital). Supposedly they've been improved so I'll do all of them, eventually (I'm not in a hurray and I won't have time for awhile).

My truck hasn't seen a dealer since I bought it, and I'm afraid they might "fix" things . . .

Stepper motors can go bad one at a time; it isn't uncommon for only ONE to go first... especially because the speedo sees the most movement of all the gauges.

The speedo on my '04 Tahoe went last Feb. A dealer in Jacksonville, Fl took care of repacing the entire cluster. The defect showed up on a trip down pulling a trailer with two bikes, so they dropped the truck for four days and rode around Fl.

That was all warrantied but it IS an '04 and it was about 78,000 miles.

Yeah I was looking into just doing it myself after the reading the DIY article. Where did you get your motors.

Got mine on eBay. Search for "GM Cluster Chevy Tahoe Silverado Stepper Motor" with the quotes and it should come right up. Seems like the box came in well under a week. Seller was "mandigital" in Minnesota. The motors are "X25 168" or "X 25 168" as some throw in an extra space.

Are the eBay ones legit? I'm thinking about doing my stepper motors while doing my LED conversion....

Guess I won't know until I put them in and see them work for another 10 years. The guy I bought them from had very high satisfaction ratings from customers, and a lot of customers over a long period of time. He also does cluster repairs (or exchanges? I'm still not clear on that but I wanted to keep my original).

Somebody else seemed to be selling them from way out of the country and that seemed odd to me. I bought from the guy in Minnesota.
